Explosion, many deaths at Ariana Grande concert in Manchester: Open Thread

One of the injured in Manchester

Terrible news: An explosion outside an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester has left at least 19 dead and 50 injured, according to press reports at the time of this writing. There are apparently indications it was a suicide bomber, but details are still scarce at this point.

Got a message from a roadie mate little while ago. Crew at Arena saying there’d been a big explosion. Crew ok but describing pretty horrific scene. Audience was mainly young kids and teens. Explosion either in foyer or by doors as people exiting near merchandise stall.

Now checking radio news. Reporting 19 fatalities and multiple casualties. Controlled explosion just carried out on second suspect device.

Feel really sick, and that’s not like me. Even 7/7 didn’t feel like this. Think it’s the fact it’s just kids who would have been so happy and excited moments before.. :-/

I’m at Manchester Royal Infirmary right now (just recovering from routine surgery thankfully). Certainly plenty of ambulance sirens to listen to tonight 🙁

My heart goes out to all our Brit friends and family.

Especially those poor kids that would have been at this show, and their poor parents. Heartbreaking. I can’t help but put myself in their shoes, and it’s horrifying.

I hope there is no further loss of life.

I could have gone to sleep tonight in blissful ignorance but I just had to check Facebook one more time before bed, didn’t I. Those poor kids. I hope they find the bastards that did this.

I am so sorry. All those poor parents must be going out of their minds. And the kids, who’d been having a great time until then.

Security is pretty strict at that venue because of the area’s previous history. All bags checked and the like.

But at the end of the night they just open the doors. There’d be parents coming in to pick up their kids so anyone could wander into the foyer without being checked.

Just saw an update from the Manchester police. They are treating it as a terrorist attack.

Death stand at 19 still; injuries at 50 at last report. Emergency number for information on loved ones is 0161 856 9400.

I hope for the best that can be expected. Reports have said the explosion occurred just outside the venue in the public foyer.

There has been no confirmation that it was a suicide bomber.

Why are yahoo’s comments are just as terrible as youtube’s comment sections nowadays..

Just read an article about this and the things people are saying are sick; there’s little sympathy for the victims. Just unnecessary fear-mongering from the ‘refugees will do this to us too if we bring them here’ / ‘this is the liberal agenda’ crowd. Fuck them.

My heart and sympathies to everyone and anyone there. Children and parents simply wanted to enjoy a show. I hope there are no more fatalities reported.. 1 is too damn much.

What kind of fucking asshole would do this shit? God damnit. An Ariana Grande concert? A bunch of happy kids enjoying themselves?

Why?

Just… why? Why are people? Why?

Holy shit…

I went to University in Manchester and had some of the best years of my life there. This is unbelievably shocking. I’m so sorry for all of the victims and anyone who had to witness what happened. Especially as they’re so young 🙁

@Haise,

Yahoo comments have always been terrible. Back when Roy Horn (of Siegfried and Roy fame) had the near-fatal tiger bite, the trolls were out there making fun of it in the story’s comment section.

A few years ago, Yahoo had a story about a murdered woman. The report in this one was basically “A woman and her children were found murdered in their home 50 minutes ago. Detectives arrived on the scene 30 minutes ago and are investigating the crime.” No other details about this family was released in the article – no name, race, marital status, career, nothing. Only a picture of the neighborhood in question, which showed well-kept lower income homes. That’s it.

The comments on that story were all “The woman was a [prostitute] and all the kids had different fathers and were all mixed race to boot yadayadayada. They deserved this fate”. Based on nothing more than ‘murdered woman w/kids’.

A third one from some years ago involved a Black truck driver for a brewery (I think) going on a workplace shooting spree because of how he’d been treated by his coworkers (like, they wouldn’t load his truck in the order his stops took place in, stuff like that). One of the stories had a statement by his live-in girlfriend, a blond white woman. The picture used for her was…well, lets just say I’ve seen driver’s license photos that were more flattering to their subjects than that one was of her. The comments on that one, summed up were “If I had to look at that face every day, I’d go on a shooting spree too! HARHARHAR!!!!!”

>.<

Tl;dr: Yahoo comments have always been horrible. Why should now be any different?

Edited for minor grammar mistakes.

This is why moderators are a thing, to make sure shitheads like these don’t ruin everything they touch.

Condolences to the Brits, here’s to hoping there’d be no one else that’ll be harmed by the perpetrators of this tragedy.

Another sad day.

Doubly so because I heavily suspect that this explosion will draw ressource from actually useful programs to prevent that to useless border controls and counter-productive, terrorist-spawning airstrikes.

I woke up to the news this morning. I feel really devastated by this, which is funny in a way because as a Londoner who goes to Westminster frequently for work and uses the underground almost daily, this feels somehow worse than the recent Westminster or 7/7 attacks. And I only go to really boring places when I go to Manchester.

I guess it’s partly because I have a nearly-tween who likes Ariana Grande. I told him this morning and he was obviously in shock.
