They’re the right wing propoganda machine, it’d be more surprising if they didn’t practice their bigotry off camera.
@Anbuga
How the fuck does that even work?
You are getting the same question I gave my own family. How do the things you don’t about Beyonce possibly go down a road like that?
Meaningless to you. Can you ever look up eat the meaning was to Beyonce?
That’s a fucking objective fact by the way. No watter what your feelings on the matter are it has meaning to someone. Your own words betray the lie, it has meaning to you, a negative meaning. All you want to do is shut people like Beyonce up so you get with other people feeling threatened by things you can’t actually describe and play pretend about reality. As a white man I’m supposed to be impressed by this weakness of character? For all your posturing and puffery you are weak and incapable when it comes to more than gang activity with other bigots.
That you and your ilk can’t actually describe reality accurately is a flaw I will take advantage of while being open and honest about it. Get a spine and start introspecting about the things you dislike.
Ugh. Fox News is the perfect warning to the “cool” or “chill” girls who think that if they buddy up to misogynists, they can avoid being the victim of misogyny.
And I just realized that came off victim blaming. It’s never okay to sexually harass someone and no one has it coming. I just hope younger women who are still stuck in that cool/chill girl mindset see these stories and start to rethink things.
Best of luck, France!
The fuck.
@Anbuga
Are you fucking kidding me? Why should anyone care if they want to convey meaning with an image and text? Have you ever looked at language more broadly? Do you have any idea just how many ways human beings can transmit information and meaning? Why should anyone be limited by text? Language evolves. At no point in time has it ceased to change from one generation to the next. Why should it stop for you?
Language has been pictorial and frankly this change makes perfect sense. If more meaning can be passed on with less effort that’s just what human beings are going to do. You whined about the Guttenberg press didn’t you?
That’s perfectly normal human behavior you ignoramus! XD !
So much of this cultural conflict has been about people trying to say that X normal behavior is is unacceptable because…and then a bunch of feelings attached to nothing I can find outside of you. The common denominator looks like a need to socially handicap people in a political conflict and I see nothing to to change my mind in you.
Did you get the meaning of the .gif? If so mission accomplished. Time to move on to whatever is next.
I think that’s what they said about newspapers and political cartoons too. Keep on whining. You just don’t want to have to pick up new skills to compete. This is weakness.
Can you be any more culturally unaware? Young people on the political right use image macros (“.gifs”) and other memes as much as on the left. It’s all over Facebook and Twitter.
@Anbuga
Pure social manipulation. You don’t give a shit about black people in Africa and I don’t believe for one minute you’ve made similar complaints with respect to music videos with political slants favorable to you. Fucking prove it if you think they destroyed someone else’s property. You are hitting lots of racist bingo squares, the “all black people are thieves” is unsurprising you socially degenerate fuck.
If you think water should be conserved in such a way go address it in a place that makes sense like places where water policy is being argued. All you want once again is to prevent people from expressing themselves politically. I hope you are at least be honest about it to yourself, otherwise your mind is fucked. Not irretrievably but still fucked nevertheless.

I’m a late Boomer (was still in grade school when these gems were popular) and yeah, they were everywhere. The theme from Love Story was the very first song I got completely burned out on.
Sometimes I listen to reruns of old Casey Kasem American Top 40 shows on Sirius XM, and at one point there were three different versions of the theme from Love Story in the top 40 simultaneously. Here is some deathless art for the ages:

No problem, friend! I don’t mind talking about my gender. Mostly because it sometimes helps me make sense of things that I don’t understand quite yet myself.
I can’t speak for everyone, but for me personally: It’s like waking up one morning feeling like pretty Feminine and being more okay with being female, and other days waking up and being less okay with it. Somedays, I just wake up and don’t feel like any gender at all, and I just shrug and go about my day as though I didn’t have one, which is, I just go about my day as normal, really.
I mean, I do participate in Female-boxed things, like crafting, sewing, liking cooking and the color pink, etc., but I don’t do those things because they’re gendered so much as it’s because I like those things.
It’s a little hard to explain because it’s based more on feeling than it is on more tangible things. But then again, that’s what 99% of gender is for me: feeling.
Again, it’s really hard to explain because it’s a feeling. It’d be like describing what “happy” is to someone who’s never experienced it, or what “love” feels like to someone who has no frame of reference.
But, the way I view it is: I’m not a gender. I am me. I am Alex. And Alex is Alex. I don’t wake up and feel like a “woman” a lot of the time. I just wake up and feel like Alex, if that makes some kind of sense.
I don’t have any resources personally, but I do have my own experiences, so I hope that helps!
I have a number of things to say about that song. Now, where do I begin…?
Begin with how the entire song is about what a woman can do for a man, with not even one word about her being an actual person.
I just looked up the lyrics and they are horrifically cheesy and yeah, not much about the woman as an actual person.
This is the line that bugged me most though.
Just because the oceans were on Earth way before any sapient animal that might feel love was.
I guess it’s better than Vanessa Williams’ Save the Best for Last
Wtf? No it doesn’t.
I know song lyrics aren’t necessarily meant to be literal let alone scientifically accurate, but some things I just can’t get past.
@Fabe
Yeah its Bull’s store.
The song, the book, and the movie are all tremendously vapid. Even the tagline, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry” is idiotic.
@wwth the lyrics that have always had that effect on me are from “Missing” by Everything But the Girl:
Argh! Why would a desert ecosystem miss the rain? It gets as much as it requires, it’s a niche that would be devastated by torrential rain!
😉 just silly lyrics-rage.
This guy is sounding both clingy and is taking her companionship for granted.
@Ooglyboggles
Ah, I see you’ve never had the dubious pleasure of seeing the movie or you’d realize that is exactly what it is about.
They’re both at Harvard, I believe, although only Oliver’s academic career is important, of course, and the entire story is how Jenny’s beautiful, graceful, and most importantly silent suffering and death from cancer affects HIM.
Her pain and troubles never stop her from loving HIM and letting HIM know he’s the most speshul-weshul important boy in the whole wide world.
If that isn’t enough glurge for ya, I believe there is also a sequel called “Oliver’s Story” but I have thankfully never seen it.
Anyone else afraid about the French election right now?
Second round will be Macron vs Le Pen

I was so glad my parents never got into that book/movie because when they (mostly my mom) did, we had to have the book and the album* too. So after 47 years, allow me to “fix that for them”:
Love means saying you’re sorry whenever it’s needed. (Among other things.)
“People who never have to say sorry” is a null set. Whenever anyone quoted the original tagline ten-year-old me rolled my eyes.
*I found the soundtrack to “Paint Your Wagon” in my dad’s collection when I cleaned out the house! 9_9
@dreemr
That’s, so much worse. Like, holy smokes, there’s objectifying, and there’s turning a dying women into your willing and comforting hug pillow for YOUR needs. Isn’t a person like this usually the Villain in romance because they don’t consider the thoughts and feelings of their partners outside of their own wants?
Wikipedia’s excerpt on Oliver’s Story, it has a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes:
A brogressive rich lawyer with a persecution complex goes after even more wealth and power through an affair but his attachments of his previous victim I mean love is ruining his current relationship and his father’s approval. I think my anger broke.
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”
No, love means you can say you’re sorry and really really mean it, because the person you love and who loves you is worth it.
PI:
This reminds me, one time in my high school biology class we discussed human body temperature. It’s usually around 36.5 to 37 C, with a little individual and time-of-day variation.
One of the girls mentioned that her normal temp was under 36 C. This made one of us boys sincerely curious, and he asked: “Does it feel…different?”
Girl: “Uh…what?”
Teacher (smirking to the class): “He was asking, do you feel different than him?”
Holy butts Miggy, do you not know what a paragraph break is? Or are you like that other troll we had earlier who just didn’t know where the fuck it is, and refused to look out of sheer laziness?
I don’t recall anyone saying that all MRAs are “reactionary fascists”. I do recall people saying that there’s a lot of overlap between the two groups, which I agree with, but not that all MRAs are fascists and vice versa.
We would if it wasn’t so damn expensive to go and listen to Elam and Co. run their mouths for hours on end.
But, the real question is: How are these two points related? How is going and “crashing a party” even remotely comparable to fascism?
There’s a lot of other reasons why women feel unsafe in society, but I don’t really expect you’ll listen so there’s really no point in telling you is there?
No one said it was the “right” thing to do. Just that it’d be fun.
Finally, something we can agree on!
See, here’s the thing, Miggy: We here can agree that the MRM does bring up a lot of very real problems! We do believe that there are a lot of problems that men and boys face in our society that really do need to be addressed, and the MRM recognizes most of them.
The problem comes when this happens:
When the MRM says that it’s those Evil Feminists/”welfare state”/[insert MRM boogyperson here] who are the ones causing the problems, instead of looking at things like Toxic Masculinity or oppressive gender roles, which is what feminism focuses on.
This is where their credibility falls apart.
The other, OTHER issue is:
You must not have seen the videos from last year’s “conference”. They really don’t address these issues. At all.
They just kvetch for hours about how feminists are ruining everything, but they don’t actually care to do anything about it beyond harass feminists and whine on the internet.
Which is what Paul Elam says his mission is anyways.
Holy shit, that’s only a sentence fragment. Brevity, dude. Brevity.
You sit here and complain that feminists and our ilk are using “turgid, jargon-pregnant academese”, but you post a wall-of-fucking-text full of “lookit me, I’m so smart!” style prose and expect people to parse that shit on your behalf.
Pot, meet kettle.
Sure, not everything feminists talk about is for the layperson. But not everything is supposed to be. A lot of this stuff is Advanced Feminism, not meant for everyone to understand until they’ve studied the subject some. Feminism is a complex issue, with a lot of layers. You can’t get to the core until you’ve at least peeled back a few of those layers.
The problem with bullshit like this is: you’re demanding that every conversation about feminism is Feminism 101 level, so it can be on your level. You’re demanding control over the pace and the topic of a conversation that you don’t need control over.
You’re demanding that we take time to sit down and explain everything to you in the simplest of terms, instead of getting off your (metaphorical) ass and doing some research yourself to find the Feminism 101 section on your own. It’s like walking into the Reference section of the Library and demanding that there be children’s picture books on the shelf for the same topic, instead of going to the children’s section to find those books for yourself.
It’s intellectually lazy, Miggy.
Wait, huh?
Do you know what “harbinger” means?
How is Beyonce announcing or bringing about “white male fiefdom”?
See, this is the point I made earlier: You don’t know what you’re talking about and are getting mad that other people aren’t stooping to basic levels to appease you.
I’mma just dot “BLM is racist!” square on the Troll Bingo card.
Why do you care what Buzzfeed posts about if you hate it so much, broseph?
Unless you’re just mad that they’re not posting what YOU want them to post about? In which case, I’d offer for you to go and actually post the stuff you wanna post about instead of sitting around and huffing about Buzzfeed not doing it.
And yet we feminists are the verbose ones, yeah?
Let’s break this down though, because I’m amused by it.
“entitled”
What, like being a guy who gets mad that Buzzfeed doesn’t post only what he personally approves of? Or like a guy who gets mad that feminists aren’t carefully explaining to him why they need to exist? Or a guy who thinks that people with vaginas or different genders or things that are different from his experience should shut up and not speak because it bothers him?
“spiritually-neutered”
Someone’s mad that not everyone follows his religion as religiously as he does, I see.
See, the thing is: I’m actually kind of religious myself. I just don’t make it a huge, central part of my life. It’s a part of my life, sure. And it’s a part I devote a good portion of time to. But I don’t let it rule me, and I certainly don’t try to use it to rule others.
But apparently that makes me a bad person?
“perennially-networking”
Well, that’s the only way we’re going to get jobs in this economy that the previous generation ruined for us, so…
It’s also a great way to get new experiences and learn about cultures different from your own.
“terminally-adolescent”
CS Lewis once said: “To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence.”
What I see is a group of people who are mature enough to genuinely enjoy “childish” things, while still doing all the adult things like paying taxes and having jobs and such.
A’int nothin’ wrong with that.
“gif hoarding”
Hey, I don’t do that anymore! There’s sites for it now, so I can free up space on my hard drive.
“emoji-spewing”
Does anyone understand the current emoji-EVERYTHING fad? Because I don’t.
I mean, emojis are neat little shortcuts for expressing feelings that we may not be able to put into words, and they’re also great for adding context to text that otherwise would have been missed, but I don’t understand why we need emoji everything.
Especially of the poop emoji. I don’t understand the fascination with the poop emoji.
“millennials”
Oooh, there’s a buzzword!
So, what is a “millennial”? Well, most researchers start the group in the 1980’s, and a lot of reachers put the cutoff date as 1994 or 1995, but it has been put as far forward as 2004.
So, anyone born between those years is technically a “millennial”, myself included.
But I don’t think that’s the thing anyone thinks about when they refer to a “millennial”. When I hear people use it in a negative, much like Miggy, what I hear is “you durn kids git off muh lawn!”
She’s also got more money and fame than you, and people like her a lot more than most MGTOWs.
Sounds like those grapes are sour.
Actually, copying and pasting is sometimes a lot easier than typing out words.
I mean, just because you find it more difficult, it doesn’t mean the rest of us do.
Again, it’s a choice of expression that sometimes conveys feelings we might have a hard time putting into words, and it’s a way we can convey feelings to other people who might understand that better than words.
You’re just mad that we’re not chiseling our boredom with you into stone, huh grandpa?
I’m adding “popular” and “culture”, and the phrase “popular culture” to the list of words and phrases Miggy very obviously doesn’t understand.
How would you prefer we relate to other people, Miggs? Because most people choose to do it through shared experiences.
That is, we find a common thread with which to relate to people, and that common thread is usually some form of POPULAR CULTURE. As in CULTURE that is POPULAR and is therefore very likely to be relevant to a LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE.
Well, I would say that it’s very likely that Miggy was born in the Millennial generation considering the wide berth of years included in it, but then I remember he’s a three hundred-and-something year old.
What is “unconsolably”? Even Google doesn’t know what the fuck you’re trying to say. Did you mean “inconsolably”?
And if you did, do you not see the protests and movements that are happening online and off? Or do you have your blinders on?
Because I see a massive group of people connecting via social media that wouldn’t have been possible even a decade ago. I see a large group of people sharing experiences, and relating to one another through shared experiences (yes, even through POPULAR CULTURE), and learning about other people.
I see people using social media as an online avenue to arrange for change in the meatspace, and it’s having a very visible impact.
Please tell me how I can stop participating in capitalism. I’d really love to stop participating in capitalism.
I’d love to put in a much better style society where people aren’t told they don’t deserve to live if they can’t “contribute” to it in some measurable way.
But I must love capitalism and have no complaints about it! Because I participate in it! And I can’t be critical of things I participate in!
There’s a word for people like this: Hipster.
Because it’s easy? Because we’re human beings with shared experiences? Because we like things?
Why is this so evil to you? Why do you hate people relating to one another through shared experiences so much? Or, why do you hate people relating through things you don’t personally approve of so much?
What do you think we should be relating with if all these things are so awful and make us “brain-dead”?
What do you relate to other people with? Because I can tell you, it ain’t your intellect or personality.
Well, feminists DO want to destroy the patriarchy, and I also just confessed to wanting to destroy capitalism, so…
TIL: Miggy doesn’t know what a music video is. Miggy also thinks that only Beyonce would waste precious water, and he hasn’t ever wasted a drop.
Here’s a hint: Music videos are fiction.
Beyonce didn’t just run up and bash some dude’s car in. It was staged. The car was meant to be broken.
We can say “this makes me laugh”, but it’s also (again) relating to someone else to post a gif. Simply because we choose not to do something doesn’t mean we’re somehow incapable of doing the thing.
“As someone who has owned a Twitter before”
Wow, really grandpa? One whole Twitter? You owned a whole Twitter?
Well, yeah. Humans advance society and all that. Those shows are products of their times, just as “old literature” is a product of its time.
Youth are always doing things differently, it doesn’t make it BAD, miggy. You’re doing shit different than your forefathers. I don’t see you giving up electricity or computers just because “youths”.
This made me laugh. (See, I am capable of doing it!)
Still gonna post a gif tho.
http://www.reactiongifs.com/r/2013/07/laughter.gif
See, the thing that makes me laugh about this argument is that we don’t actually know what media from our generation is going to pass The Test of Time.
Because most of the media from our generation hasn’t had time to actually take that test yet. And it’s silly (and really arrogant) to assume that the stuff you don’t like won’t be POPULAR enough to actually be talked about years later.
Because that’s all The Test of Time really is: Popularity. Sure, there’s an element of how “good” something is, but we talk about bad shit too.
For instance, people still talk about the Twilight series, the Super Mario Brothers movie, and stuff like that.
And another thing that’s going to flub your Test of Time Theory is this: We now have given the power to archive things to more people than ever before, AND we now have more space to archive things than ever before.
It used to be that only certain people had access to put things into historical archives, and there was also a much more limited space to put things, so ‘good’ things were valued above others. (We’ve actually lost a LOT of historical things because people at the time decided it was bad, unworthy, or they just wanted to destroy it.)
Now, with the power of the internet, anyone can archive anything. And because we have so much space via millions of servers on the internet to archive things, we can also store much ‘less important’ things. Even things that were previously not archived by the generations before us.
We’re leaving a greater understanding of our culture for future generations than any generation before us, and that’s actually really fucking cool.
According to you. So no offense if I don’t take your opinions into account.
But this does bring up a point I made in the last response: The things that we happen know of from those times weren’t the only things that had ‘cultural value’.
Those things were decided to have ‘cultural value’ by the people in power at the time, and we have lost a LOT of stuff due to malicious intent, ineptitude, and yes, even the power of decay.
Your assumption (and that’s exactly what it is) that the only things that survived your so-called “Test of Time” were the only things meant to survive is garbage.
I would bet even more than half of “the kids today” wouldn’t know what the Andy Griffith theme song is. I know what that is, but only because I have grandparents who watch a lot of old tv.
Because that show was popular back when black and white television was still the norm.
If we take your “the kids today” to mean anyone under the age of 20, then it’s very likely they grew up long after the show’s popularity waned, and just don’t know what it is because they’ve never been exposed to it.
That doesn’t make them “vapid and unenlightened” or whatever, it just means they grew up in a different time with different values. And those values aren’t inherently worse than the ones that came before it.
In fact, I daresay they’re better because they’re building on a wider base of knowledge and experience.

Sorry to everyone (except whatever-the-fuck-your-name-is-this-time) for the teal deer. I have to balance troll-chewing and work, yanno?
