Happy birthday, Dali.
Happy Dali++.
@various
Thanks!
@Sinkable John
I’ve usually heard versions with a male narrator that seem to imply that gambling is what ruined his life, while the female narrator implies that it’s sex work. Might just be my interpretation though.
Also, love Nina Simone’s version; Leadbelly’s is older, though, so I posted that one.
@Dalillama
Happy birthday!
OT – I’d apologise for the derail, but we’ve wandered a distance from polo shirts.
Here is what men can and have done on the issue of male suicide: talk someone down from a bridge, buy them coffee, persuade them to seek help, then (on being identified later) help with fundraising efforts to raise awareness of mental health issues, including running an effing marathon. Manly enough?

(Sorry for the FB link, couldn’t find the video on the main site)
Surely that’s better than verbally abusing women and allies online, in terms of the whole “difference made” thing.
And Hippy Bathday, Dali Llama!
re: there is a house in new Orleans…
For a good history, and a good read, “Chasing the Rising Sun”, by Ted Anthony, a ten-year pilgrimage after the roots of the song. Lots of good folk music info and history (there’s a version from the Ozarks that’s set in Baxter Springs, Kansas!)
You know they say you should never meet your heroes cos they’ll always disappoint? Is there a corollary to that where someone you thought was a bit dodgy turns out to be quite nice?
Alastair Campbell (a controversial political figure here) did a great and very candid interview about his own mental health demons and why he was now part of a campaign (with Princes William and Harry) to remove the stigma so guys felt open to talk about their own problems. Credit where credit’s due I dropped a short message via his agent just to say I admired him for doing that. Next day he sent me a lovely email back.
So not quite Malcolm Tucker after all.
Hey, guys?
Well, specifically: hey, all trans women here?
One of my trans female friends has a problem.
She’s dependent on her mother for funding when she goes to college. (She isn’t going /yet/–she will in the fall.)
She’s trying to transition physically–at the moment, by getting hormones.
Her mom found out.
Her mom’s threatening to cease financial support if she transitions.
Can I gather some advice on her behalf?
@Troubelle
(minor note: folks would’ve been better than guys as an inital salutation there)
Your friend has all my sympathy and a hard row to hoe. I don’t know where she’s going, but my university has a queer resource center; if hers does they might have locally relevant suggestions for reducing her financial dependence. Also the health center might be able to help with hormones when she’s in an appropriate place. One thought is to look into testosterone blockers alone. It’s no substitute for the whole dealm but it may well help her mental state and it will take longer for the physical changes to be impossible to hide when necessary.
@Dali, Weird Eddie
I was (and still am) probably heavily biased due to said context, so I might just be hearing it this way. I’ma give it a long hard listen when I’m sober.
Anyway, happy birthday Dali !
Have a Dylan cover :

This is definitely not my favorite version – dude’s been playing this song for like… as long as I remember, which means more than two decades. I guess my favorite period was around 1999-2004, though that could just be ’cause I was a kid back then. I don’t think any video of that has ever found its way to the internet ’cause it was before uploading that stuff really became a thing, but I do happen to know exactly where to find a lot of them, full concerts filmed with sound from the tables. Other artists, too. Along with one big ass pile of albums mainly from the 60s or 70s. *sigh* that shoulda been mine some day.
Sadly, I ain’t gonna inherit a damn thing from the old man, so here’s a tip, folks : some people out there are hoarding friggin treasure troves. I could draw a pirate styled map or two.
@Troubelle
I have nothing to add but love and good thoughts for your friend. I hope things get better for her.
@Alan
I’m on the same side of the Pond, and know exactly what you mean about Campbell. It’s a cautionary tale about thinking you know a person’s whole story from what you read in the press (although I’d say the same about IRL – big fan of the To Kill A Mockingbird quote about walking in someone else’s shoes).
@Dali
Sorry about derp, but thanks. I’ve given her the advice.
Happy birthday, Dalillama!
@Abungholio:
@Troubelle:
I’m not a trans woman, but maybe your friend should delay her transition. I know it’s best to begin when you’re young, but it would only be for a few years.
I also understand that, when you’re 17 or 18 years old, a year seems like an eternity.
I hope, for her sake, she stays in school. There are people who’d kill for the opportunity to go to college, and have someone else pay for it.
I probably should have kept my trap shut about this one. I just hate to think this young person might miss out on an education.
Bless Chuck Tingle!

is a perfect reply to Dom Tromp. Or our AbungaMiggy.
Omg, I am thinking of signing up for Twiiter just to follow Chuck Tingle. Truly a national treasure.
Abunga is definitely the sea gull kid.
He’s never had to survive on his own at all. His biggest problem is that girls don’t pay attention to him because he’s only hot shit in his own imagination.
Life is going to knock that chip off his shoulder pdq.
There will be enough white male tears, we could fill a wave pool with them. Wouldn’t that be fun?
Do the women on this website have a patriarchy fetish ?
Seems like everyone on this website is OK and even secretly looking forward to living under a patriarchy…..
The most extreme brutal patriarchy in the world … 100x worse than the worse patriarchy in the entire History of Western Civilization.
Islam
Everyone here seems to be totally ok with it .. You want open borders .. more rapes … more assaults etc… bankrupt the economy ..
Everything that’s happened in Europe .. yet total silence on these anti-traditonal values trendy anti-racism feminist websites…
Seems like someone has a subconscious patriarchy fetish to me…
I made a mistake on part of my long post. The red and blue are not temperature. It’s a bit vaguely defined in the article (increase or decrease in feeling) so I’m going to get a better read on it. Either way a feeling state has some more structure for us to work with.
Victory will be assured when these MRA guys convert to Islam.
You ladies are gonna have allot to complain about. Oh wait. This website will be censored/shut down. Never mind.
I mean … common sense tells you if Islam establishes itself as the dominant religion you can kiss any semi-balance of equality gone.
I think these MRA guys, especially the white guys, will love the idea of converting if it means taking 4 or 5 wives and owning them. Yes. Like Property.
And you ladies thought you had it rough with an offensive T-shirt .. ha ha ha .. ha
@IBH Ardipithecus That’s the one…. I remember when I was there asking the trebouchet master ‘um, where did those rocks go?’ He said they had a target practice island and he HOPED that’s where they ended up.
@David Henderson:
…and I think you’re full of shit.
Your move, Holy Man.
(Ellipsis have 3 dots. See my first sentence for guidance.)
David Henderson
“Seems like everyone on this website is OK and even secretly looking forward to living under a patriarchy…..”
We already do live in a patriarchy what are you talking ab- Oh wait of course you meant a Patriarchy run by brown people of a different religion then you. That’s completly different(S)
Anyone taking bets on time until this troll melts down?
Can I also point out that for hundreds of years, Islam was part of Western European civilization?
