There are so many amazing things going on politically at the moment — amazing good, amazing bad, just plain gobstopping — that I figured, hey, let’s do an open thread before we’re all blown up in World War III or something.
No trolls!

Just a quick note for anyone wondering: I very mildly addressed some specific hurtful/abusive behaviours from my old friend re: my new friend, his gf, as suggested by folks here in another thread. It didn’t go too badly. I plan to say more in future, particularly when hurtful actions are taking place.
Viscaria, you are a really good friend.
Looking at the results, in Georgia, all Republicans combined won something less than 49% of the vote, an exceptional turnout, while Ossoff alone won 48.1%. The remaining % went to other Dem candidates.
By the numbers, if the same people turn out in June, by which time we can hope and expect more people to be disenchanted with both Trump and Republicans generally, the support for those other Dem candidates could reasonably be expected to put Ossoff over the top, so long as he does nothing stupid to lose support.
The carrier oops just looks inept.
Buh-bye Bill-O, rot in hell.
And it is official: O’Reilly is out. Hahahahaha

Ooglyboggles: *giggles wildly*
I cannot tell you how very happy that makes me, or how very much I miss the absolute class act that formerly occupied the WH…
But one by one, they’re falling into irrelevance. Not a great 2017 for the haters, so far. And Andrew Anglin getting sued? Boo hoo.
My heart goes out to them. /s

It give me a fuzzy feeling inside, and my smile grows wider as it all sinks in.
“My time is now.” / everyone is under investigations, unable to pass bills, get fired, get burned by others and unpopular to all
Oh Murphy’s Law, how do I love thee, let me count thy ways.
There’s a lot to unpack over this past week, particularly here in the UK with the snap election for June. The Conservatives are most likely going to win a stronger majority so they keep hold for technically two extra years as the following election would be in 2022 rather than 2020. Enough time for any outrage and damage on Brexit finally going through to be mitigated, people have short term memories sadly. I’m considering trying to stand in my constituency but I’m worried about splitting the vote, lack of experience, etc. Doesn’t exactly make me an ideal candidate! But I would like to get a bit more active, even if it gets me humiliated, my pride levels are lower than a lot of people. 🙂
As for USA news, glad O’Reilly has finally been kicked off. He’ll likely live a comfortable time and move elsewhere, maybe Youtube shows with Patreon money like what Colin Moriarty did after leaving Kinda Funny. Alex Jones deserves to lose custody over his children, after what he did to so many parents with Sandy Hook as well as the damage the rest of the nonsense he’s peddled has done to others.
@Oogly:
Cooking question for the peanut gallery:
I was looking through my pantry just now, and stumbled across some bags of dried fruit I forgot was there. I have four 2lb. bags of dried cherries, and a ~1lb. bag of dried figs. Any ideas for dishes I can use them in? The figs and the cherries don’t have to be in the same dish, ‘natch, but otherwise….
Ooglyboggles,
I know I should not indulge in schadenfreude, but yeah. *Giggles some more*
After the desperation I felt Election Night? After enduring eight years of listening to the vitriolic hatred for Obama, et all?
Gonna go ahead and indulge a bit. Just a wee bit.
I’m hopeful after Ossoff and would like to remind everyone that is able to please donate to Democratic campaigns even in other states. It’s what we should have been doing all along.
Get out the vote, too.
@Godzilla Roberts – single mom here, been there more than once, e-mail me tamijo8227 atsign yahoo dot com and I’ll get you some funds.

Got paypal?
@Redsilkphoenix
If I were you, I would switch the cranberries for cherries and figs in this recipe.

@Viscaria
Awesome!
Just did a post on Bill O.
Isn’t it hilarious how Milo claimed it was all according to plan when he got banned from Twitter, that the platform was sinking and getting banned was perfect for his career, and now that he’s realized Twitter just goes on without him and nobody cares about him he’s back on Twitter with a sock account?
@Redsilkphoenix: Eight pounds of dried cherries is a LOT of dried cherries. That said, one recipe that I’ve made that is mighty tasty is “Couscous with Dried Cherries and Pecans” from Cook’s Illustrated. (As an added bonus, unlike most recipes from Cook’s Illustrated, it doesn’t take a non-expert chef all day to make)
As it’s not my recipe to share, I’m not going to copy/paste it here, but you can find it by searching Google for “Cook’s Illustrated dried cherries couscous”, and selecting the Google Books link. (You’ll need to scroll up a bit for the Classic Couscous recipe that this is a variant of)
Amazon also has the cookbook for $20, which I can’t recommend enough.
@Ryeash: ‘Don’t speak out’? ‘Don’t boycott the restaurant’? ‘Don’t sink to their level (false equivalence, ho!)’? I gotta wonder what actions against the hate group those fake allies would be in favor of. Because ‘be the better person’ or ‘live and let live’ – that they normally suggest – are functionally equivalent to ‘maybe the people kicking us will get tired and give up’.
@Redsilkphoenix
I like putting dried cherries in brownies, especially if it’s a really sweet recipe. I’ve never used dried figs, though. Maybe plumped up with some kind of alcohol or broth and used as a sauce? (Either one would be good with pork or chicken, probably.)
A thread on chowhound about dried cherries.
Here’s another thread on chowhound.
I have a couple big bags of dried cherries myself.

AND OMG BILL IS GONE.
BILLLL IS GONNNNE.
20 years too late, IMO. But it’s fun to finally watch the old bastard crash and burn off of TV like he should’ve in the late 90s.
Sorry for the slow replies, been sleeping a lot today. High pain, no meds.
As this is an open thread:
For some reason, in the last few days, I’ve not gotten any blog emails. I mean, at all. No new posts, no new comments, no subscription prompts. Nada. If I click on existing messages, I can still go to the wordpress page with all my subs. They’re all there, but I’m just not getting alerted to anything. A little frustrated, mostly curious tho. Anyone else ever have this happen?
@Viscaria
Glad it worked out 🙂
@Weird Eddie & Parse The Potatoes
THANK YOU. It’s so frustrating. I guess I shouldn’t have expected more from the safety pin crowd, though.
Thanks for commiserating, just needed to vent there. I did find my people today, so things are looking up. We’re not letting this go unchallenged.
I don’t get why she (as her father does) pronounces it èn rather than the usual nasal en.
The nasal en in parisian dialect is largely indistinguishable to a north american francophone from the nasal on. Took me a while to hear it, that year I went to a hoity-toity Grenoble school.
“Where is rpt where is Task Force 34? The world wonders.”
Sort of related to the carrier story…
Some years back HMS Nottingham crashed into some rocks. As is usual in such circumstances there was a board of enquiry. At the hearing the presenting officer referred to “Wolf Rock, variously reported as being 350, 370 or 390 miles from the coast of Australia”. At which point one of the board members chipped in “No wonder they’re so hard to spot if they keep moving around”.
To add insult to injury the vessel was returned home on one of the deck of one of those big salvage ships. The Navy defines ‘boat’ as any vessel capable of being carried by another vessel so the poor Commander was referred to as ‘Boat Captain’ from then on.
