I’m back! (Well, mostly.) Also, Kellyanne Conway did a thing.

Wat

I‘m back from the depths of flu-dom and ready to take on the world, or at least some of its most terrible and ridiculous aspects. I’m not quite at full strength yet, so posting may be a bit light for a few more days. But the flu is definitely on the way out. Thanks for your patience and support!

So does anyone want to discuss that picture up there at the top of the post? Everyone else is. Is Kellyanne Conway being weird and disrespectful to the oval office visitors, a delegation from historically black colleges and universities? Or is everybody being mean to her because OMG she was just trying to take a picture with her phone?

I’m going to go with “weird and disrespectful” but what do I know.

I’ve seen Mel Gibson at a couple of awards ceremonies lately. He’s not contrite but he’s back.

Cheers for all that. I love this site for all the stuff I learn from the knowledgeable contributors.

When the drugstores got into hoodoo in the 20s and 30s

I didn’t realise the stores went that far back. What you say though reminds me a bit of the ‘witchcraft’ shops we have here. They’re usually a combination of magical accessories and joss sticks and tie-dye clothing. And their brand of magic perhaps doesn’t reflect any ‘authentic’ tradition. They’re a handy source of the hemp cigarette papers I like though.

I’m woefully ignorant of how hoodoo (and thanks for the accurate terminology) is observed by actual practitioners. I’m familiar with the popular ‘tropes’ version you see in fiction, but I recognise that’s going to be as accurate as media portrayals of anything. The Native American influence was new to me, and pretty fascinating, so once again thank you for the education.

(also, you have one of my favourite nyms on here, it’s so perfect)

Overall, it appears that Rach feels that David and/or the commentariat are insufficiently radfem, and also not far enough left

Oh… Thanks! ?

Smacked somewhat of a ‘feminism was better before the 3rd wave’ thing.

That’s kinda how I felt here too. And I’m still kind of expecting a descent into TERF-like shit the same way I expected the “cult” thing. Not saying they’re a TERF and I’m not gonna throw accusations (though I still get a rather strong concern-troll vibe) but I wouldn’t be surprised, to put it mildly. Of course, and as always, I’d rather be proven wrong.

It’s the “real feminist” thing that tripped my alarm. Seeing as they still haven’t explained what that is, it’s still ringing as far as I’m concerned.

I also wouldn’t mind clarification on the “same back to you” thing, if only ’cause they could have a very legit point and then I’d be remiss not to hear it. Could be my poor phrasing (y’all are used to it so you could have failed to spot it too) or it could be something worse, in which case I really wanna hear about it so I can work on it.

South African traditional magical practises include the making of dolls, similar to the European tradition of poppets. People have been murdered following the discovery that they owned such dolls.

Sadly, magic-influenced murders (muti) are a thing in South Africa.

It might not be a thing in West African culture. I dunno.

@alan – well shucks, I’m happy to enlighten and entertain! I’ve always found you terribly smart and funny 🙂

Aww, shucks back at you. *blushes*

It is brilliant though how you encapsulated an entire concept in just a few words. The first time in I saw it it was like “Oh, perfect”. It says everything.

The nearest I’ve seen to that was a disability rights campaign that used “Does he take sugar?”

If she is MarineRachel (and I notice that she didn’t deny it when I asked) – be prepared to be proven right.

Sure, and so do some East Asian traditions, but all the sources I’ve seen indicate that it’s not normally an African Vodun practice. Concepts like the laws of sympathy and contagion are very common, relating to the ‘all human and prone to thinking insimilar ways’ thing.

@Alan

I didn’t realise the stores went that far back.

They started to be a thing in the later 19th century, around the time that there started to be a lot of medicines that actually helped.

On the topic of misogyny and toxic masculinity, the formal focus of the blog (and also homo and transphobia):
Four black trans women have been murdered in the U.S. in the last five days. and a woman’s ex husband murdered her and her girlfriend

@Dalilama – They weren’t really a thing in American Vudun until they took off for the tourists, but they’ve been super common in hoodoo. (AFAIK the african practices of vudun and hoodoo are from different parts of africa.)

Completely OT – I just made a cinnabon clone with brioche instead of the lean dough they use, and I feel like I may have violated some foodie law. I have gone too far and must be stopped.

As someone of the British persuasion I have no idea what you’re on about. It must be like when we talk about using caul to wrap kidneys when we’re making trifle.

I’ve never yet seen an american recipe online that doesn’t require soup mix, whatever that is. You should probably have used soup mix.

This is really strange because American cuisine in general is absolutely and obviously brilliant.

It’s my B-day today. After going through tons of misadventures with my dad, who also received a dosage of Murphy’s Law in full force, I finally now own a car. I don’t know exactly why he’d still go through the efforts of teaching me all there is to know for car maintenance, even though we clearly don’t like each other, I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I also learned that I may have ADD. Which, now that I think about it, explains everything from my childhood up to now.

I know those words latsot and I’m a little terrified of kidney and caul trifle. But y’all have bacon buttys so there’s that.

Happy birthday Ooglyboggles! Enjoy having a car and good luck with the ADD.

CleverForAGirl – Send me one a them cinnabon knockoffs and I will either condemn or absolve you, depending on the roll/my mood/whether a butterfly flapped its wings in Madagascar/etc. But I’m always down for a cinnamon roll (bun?)

Ah, the Brit obsession with kidney

“You know what would really improve this steak pie? A slight hint of urine”

And Happy Birthday Ooglyboggles!!!

Car maintenance can be quite fun. So long as you’re not bothered about having knuckles.

@Ooglyboggles: Happy birthday, and congrats on the car! And also on the possible diagnosis, good luck with that.

I would love to be pointed in the direction of this knock off cinnabon recipe…. mmmmm.

@latsot: I thought I knew what you were talking about until you said ‘trifle’. Those are sweet, aren’t they? A dessert? (I mean, obviously not, but I am still quite confused.)

I did just have a conversation with my mother where she *insisted* a tray of squares is called a tray of ‘dainties’, so… I think that one is a Manitoba thing though.

Congrats on the car too! And it sounds like the possible diagnosis might be a good thing because maybe it’s just better to know.

Is anyone watching Criminal Minds right now? They’re doing a manosphere episode right now as I type. It’s almost over, so for anyone who wants to watch it, your best bet is probably to try to find it online (cbs.com here in the US-not sure about elsewhere).
Yes, I’m back after about 3 months of being forced by time constraints to lurking.
Great to see you back, David!

I’m American and I don’t even know what American cuisine means, unless we’re talking casseroles made with condensed soup or dips made with soup mix (yes, those are two very different things).
