Edges2cats web app turns your catlike doodles into realistic cats … or horrible monstrosities

Well, it’s sort of a cat

So I’m still all flu-ed up, but I thought I would share one amazing internet thingy that’s cheered me up a bit: It’s called edges2cats, and it transforms your drawings of cats into photorealistic-looking cats.

Well, that’s what it does if your drawings are actually in the shape of a real cat. If you doodle something that’s only vaguely catlike you get a vaguely catlike creature that is equal parts adorable and terrifying.

So naturally I’ve been making a lot of these sort-of cats.

If you check out the hashtag #edges2cats on Twitter you can find some even more horrific-yet-endearing results.

Other versions of the applet make building facades, purses and shoes, if you’re into that.

Post your own here!

Welcome Ottery, and Happy Birthday Falconer!

Speaking of strange cats, everyone here should check out the game Night In The Woods, which was released Tuesday on Steam and PS4. It’s an emotional exploration game with light platform and rhythm mini game elements. You play a cat, Mae, who drops out of college and returns home to her tiny Rust Belt town.

I just finished it. It’s gorgeous and heartfelt, and highly recommended.

@ Dormousing_it-

Actually, if the stupid vagina glue worked, it would be harmless. TSS was caused by bacteria growing on the rayon fibers found in tampons.

Menstrual cups exist and I use one. They’re flexible little cups that you fold up and insert into your vagina, where they should spring open. They’re usually made of body safe silicone. You only need to empty it every 12 hours on average. It’s totally sanitary and harmless, arguably healthier than other options. :3 It is also a lot more comfortable than it sounds, I can’t feel mine when it’s in right.

I thought males of other mammal species beside humans tend to have shorter lifespans than females too.

Is this on average in the wild or does it account for captivity or both? Because the wild has a lot more variables (like territory disputes, sickness, famine) while captivity would probably provide a better look at how long certain animals would really live provided they are taken care for properly. If male animals have shorter lifespans even in captivity, if they have enough of a species to measure that, then we’d probably know if testosterone affects lifespan because, honestly, that sounds like bullshit to me. It sounds like some excuse someone made up because they don’t want to account that the socialization of boys may impact them in a way in which they takes less care of themselves and are more impulsive and shit.

Anyway, happy birthday to you !

Could it be telomere ? The creepy telomere guy was speaking about that, considering (absurdly, of course) that it was why he must (because of course) date and have sexual relationships with far younger persons.

Animals in captivity aren’t “taken care of properly”; they’re just locked up. In most megafauna, captivity drastically reduces lifespan. Elephants for instance have an average lifespan of 17 years in captivity versus 50+ years in the wild. You can get no useful data from zoos or seaparks; they’re completely unnatural and inappropriate environments.

@Alan

Considering the life span of elephants measured in the “wild” are from nature preserves, which will take in the sick animals into the doctors if they get bad enough, that’s still captivity. It’s a more free-form version of captivity but any form of human intervention is still messing with their lifespans and stuff, especially with poachers and people trying to keep them from not being extinct and all.

Besides, there’s still numerous animals that do live longer in zoos and stuff. If you ever google what animals live longer in the wild or captivity, you get all these stories about how elephants and dolphins don’t live as long. No shit. Who would have thought nomadic animals don’t do well in enclosed spaces? But tigers, wolves and apes live around a decade longer in zoos than in the wild. This is most likely because unlike elephants and dolphins, these animals are territorial and some of their cousins do well in captivity already–cats, dogs and humans.

And, also, may I point out the stupid ass panda? Tell me that dumb sack of bamboo shit thrives more in the wild than in captivity to my face.

They don’t even fuck without human intervention, bro. They don’t even fuck.

Sorry, I’m not mad at you, I just fucking hate pandas so goddamn much those fucking waste of resources that could have went to species that actually do shit for the environment.

Fuck pandas.

But, yeah, a majority of animals live longer in captivity.

I thought the pandas-not-mating thing was due to zoos keeping their environments too clean, thereby preventing pandas from using pheromones in their pee to signal sexual availability? I might be wrong.

Also, I decided to try my hand at abstract minimalist cats. The one in the middle looks sorta like a possum.

Regarding testosterone and lifespan, I always assumed there was some kind of a connection. I’ve heard from some transmen that when you start testosterone treatment, you’re warned that it comes with a higher risk of heart or liver conditions, artery diseases or the like. Though I haven’t looked into it, so I suppose getting HRT could differ from the body producing its own testosterone.

That said, a friend of mine started testosterone treatment and had the talk about hightened risks of this and that, after which the doctor said, “Well, what with you being a vegetarian, not smoking and not drinking, and being at a normal body weight, it’s unlikely to be an issue for you.”

So even if testosterone comes with a higher risk, your life choices still play a role.

@authorial Alchemy: Oh I didn’t realize TSS was linked to bacteria on rayon fibers. I thought it was due to super high absorbency tampons being left in place for too long.

Well, at any rate, it’s a dumb idea, that vagina glue. Frankly, I wouldn’t trust it to work properly.

I think they didn’t fuck much need to fuck much before. They still won’t. It seems silly to think that’s going to change. But yeah, resources spent on them are better spent elsewhere.

Pandas are so determined to not breed it seems like they’re some kind of stupid animal husbandry game on hard mode. There’s a few concessions to human interference (like the way that they tend to give birth to 2 cubs at once, but abandon one. You can swap them back and forth and mum won’t notice) but on the whole it is just a stupid grief’n’grind exercise. They also get used as political currency by the chinese government (kiss enough ass and your local zoo could borrow a panda, too!) which isn’t really very nice at all.

Panda cubs are quite cute, but I suspect that you could probably replicate the effect by putting some toddlers in panda suits. For all I know this is already done.

I saw a panda in the Philadelphia Zoo, years ago. People swarmed around the window to its enclosure, which was empty. A worker trotted out, dumped a bunch of bamboo on the floor, left. Then the panda came out. It immediately turned its back on the spectators, sat down, and started munching the bamboo. So, nobody really got much of a chance for a good photo. This was pre-cellphones; all anyone had was cameras. I think the panda was disturbed by the flashes from all the cameras. All it did was sit and eat.

I liked that bit in The West Wing where the Chinese government wouldn’t give them a panda they required and Toby asks why they can’t just get ‘a regular bear and some black and white paint’.

Re: Lifespan

Differences in life span between males and females are commonly observed across many species. For example, where the heterogametic sex (XY sex chromosomes) is male, as in humans and Drosophila, females tend to live longer than males. Similarly, in Caenorhabditis elegans, where the hermaphrodite has two X chromosomes (XX) and the male has one (XO), the hermaphrodite tends to live longer. In contrast, in most bird species, where the heterogametic sex is female (ZW sex chromosomes), males tend to live longer than females.

@ jesalin

For example, costly male-biased metabolism or behaviors, such as aggression or specific courtship behaviors, might be positively selected for, but could result in decreased life-span in males relative to females.

Blooming hypergamymous drosophila. Bet those ‘specific courtship behaviours’ involve fancy restaurants.

(quoting someone else)
We have men dying off much sooner than women. The fact that someone’s sex at birth condemns them to die earlier is repulsive. I am stunned that the government does not have commissions furiously studying this, quite literally, life or death issue for men. Closing the lifespan gap should be one of our highest priorities.

I wonder if there is anything these assholes can’t turn into a gynocentric matriarchic misandric conspiracy following its manocidal vagenda.

I wonder if they’ve ever looked at Russian life expectancy statistics when they’re busy fapping to the news that domestic violence will be decriminalised there. The difference between male and female life expectancies is big, not just bigger than “western” countries, but way bigger than the rest of BRIC, for example. Maybe it is because Russian women aren’t oppressed enough, and their life expectancy needs to be driven down to ensure equality.

Happy belated birthday, Falconer!

If there’s anything I’ve learned while internetting, it’s to run a quick google search before ranting about something. Do these very outraged guys really believe that the disparity in life expectancies between men and women isn’t being studied?

Just did a quick google and found on lifeexpectancy.com that Hispanics live longer than whites and blacks in the U.S. Don’t tell the Trumpites!

That’s super unfortunate :/ I guess now at least everyone knows what kind of person she is.

I also happened to notice that Trump striking down the protections for trans students’ bathroom rights basically went uncommented in a lot of circles. I hate to be a pessimist but I do wonder if the people who are saying the Trump administration will target trans folk to divide the ‘left’ may be correct. It seems like more and more people are making it clear that they don’t have our back.
