Trumpocalypse, Week Two Open Thread

I ran a pic of Trump through a filter based on another pic of Trump and things got weird

An open thread for anyone who wants to talk Trump — to complain about his bullshit, make fun of his hair, strategize about ways to oppose him, whatever. No trolls or Trump fans.

I’m just terrified. I’m a queer Jewish woman and I’m afraid for my life and my body and my rights.

I mean, I just want to be treated like a white cishet Christian male. Is that so much to ask?

Cmon man I was really hoping you’d write about Milo in Berkeley. Been reading this blog for a few years now and I’m a student there who was present. Was interested to hear you comment on it.

Pretty confident David saw this the first time you posted it.

@ dante

I’m a student there who was present

You’re probably in a good position to write something about it, being an eye witness on the ground as it were. I’m sure there will be lots of people interested and this is the perfect thread to do it in. People can then chip in with comments. So we get the discussion and David gets a well earned rest.

Just saw this:

Ontario to provide life-saving health care to children affected by U.S. travel ban

So while that is not good, it is less bad than it could be.

@Miri, <3 you have every right to be terrified. I can't tell you what to do, or what's right for you to do, but just know that you aren't alone, okay? Something around 60% of Americans support the Woman's March (Of those who know about it), and there's massive popular support for impeachment – and it's just the second week. You aren't alone.

@Rhuu, I dunno if you pay attention to the Federal Parliament debates, but they've been hammering the Liberals daily, urging them to take a harder stance and to take in people affected by the travel ban. I really hope that the pressure is enough to force quick action, because time really is of the essence right now. Also – good on you, Ontario!

Guyse, I just put myself through a half hour of torture watching Rebel Media. Friend of mine says he watches it and some other more progressive media to get a “balanced” picture of things, but … sweet baby baldur it was horrible. I had to shut the video off when they started saying that the QC shooter was actually the Moroccan witness, and that the police were concealing the fact and instead pinning it on the actual shooter. And their casual outrage at how all of the media and government was conspiring to cover up for those evil, evil brown people.

I gotta break my friends out of this bubble before they go too far, but, ugh, how. It’s nauseating. Like, the reporter who went to QC to investigate had just returned to the studio in the video, and her first comments were how upset and angry all of the other journalists were at her, and how they were all saying she (and Rebel Media) had caused it. That was how she replied when she was asked what the number-one thing was for her trip!

I can’t even, guys. Can’t even!

Personally, folks, between this executive order about being allowed to discriminate against LGBT people on grounds of religious freedom, and this executive order that halts the policing of white supremacist groups, I’m starting to think think that, if I were [A]; a woman, [B]; black, [C]; Latino, [D]; Jewish, [E]; Muslim, [F]; LGBT, or [G]; liberal, I’d be doing everything I could to get out of the US and into Canada, or possibly even Mexico, right now. This, of course, is exactly what the alt-right wants, but given a choice between running from them and getting killed by them, I’d pick the former. Personally, part of me hopes that Trump pisses Trudeau and Nieto off enough so that, if government-sanctioned persecution against the above-mentioned demographics starts occurring, Canada and Mexico agree to admit refugees in defiance of him.

Personally, part of me hopes that Trump pisses Trudeau and Nieto off enough so that, if government-sanctioned persecution against the above-mentioned demographics starts occurring, Canada and Mexico agree to admit refugees in defiance of him.

If government sanctioned persecution of the above-mentioned demographics starts occurring, any American fitting those demographics that shows up on the Canadian border would be classified as a refugee, at which point the Immigration and Refugee Act kicks in automatically:

Convention refugee

96 A Convention refugee is a person who, by reason of a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion,

(a) is outside each of their countries of nationality and is unable or, by reason of that fear, unwilling to avail themself of the protection of each of those countries; or

(b) not having a country of nationality, is outside the country of their former habitual residence and is unable or, by reason of that fear, unwilling to return to that country.

So if it does come to that, Canada is obligated to treat any Americans fitting those demographics as refugees. Hopefully the first one over is a lawyer, to help prove the first case.

weirwoodtreehugger: chief manatee

I’m watching Pontypool right now and that movie really takes on a whole new meaning after the event of the past few months. Or maybe it’s not the whole meaning that’s new, it’s more like the meaning is really driven home.

Hopefully some people here have seen the movie and now what the hell I’m talking about! If you haven’t seen it, I really recommend it. It’s on Netflix. Or at least the American version it. It’s a horror movie, but there’s only one gory scene and I don’t think anyone who usually doesn’t like horror need be put off by it. Most of it takes place in a radio station sound booth.

Excellent. That will provide another option for this little one who is in serious, urgent, need of surgery.

There is some sand in the gears. Like how Washington state defied the muslim ban. Some people in government positions are dissenting.

But what we really need are big, fat wrenches and a call for impeachment.

But impeaching a president is hard and it is difficult to get a fascist out of power when they have it.

This, of course, is exactly what the alt-right wants, but given a choice between running from them and getting killed by them, I’d pick the former.

If it’s any consolation, if it came down to it…there’d be no shame. You’d have many people wishing you luck, and willingly covering yours and others’ escape.

‘Til shade is gone, ’til water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last day.

@Ohlmann: my country has upcoming elections as well and at first I was worried that Trump winning the nomination and presidency would be a huge boost for the alt-right here including our weird extreme right wing/fascist party, but now that he’s been in office for 2 weeks and managed to pull of something completely ridiculous/scary/bizarre every day, I now have minor hope that he actually hurts the cause of the alt-right/fascists here.

I mean, the party leader LOVES Trump, while the whole US situation seems to be devolving into a surrealist, dystopian disaster. Trump seems like a disaster. Anyone can see that. So maybe (I hope!) he scares some potential fascism voters away to something more reasonable. Because a) their party leader openly endorses Trump’s bizarre weirdness, b) their party leader loves his openly very discriminatory policy, c) he has no issues with his cabinet picks and the sycophants he surrounds himself with, including Bannon from garbage website Breitbart, d) Trump/Breitbart/etc shows you what you get when you elect such…. ideas.

You can’t whine about ”lying leftist elites” or something when you lick the heels of a guy who feels compelled to lie through his press secretary about crowd sizes. And well, a million more things.

So yeah, I hope that Trump’s extreme bizarreness hurts the right wing’s cause….

What do mammotheers feel about calls to psychologically examine Trump/deem him unfit for office for being too unstable/potentially narcissistic/mentally ill?

To me it seems as though he’s displayed very worrying behaviour, that made me think ”that’s not normal”. (aside from morally etc, just mentally ”not normal”)

I tend to think the stance would be that that’s ableist, but I’m not even American and I’m worried for American people but also the rest of the world as I legitimately don’t trust the guy with nukes or ”not starting wars”.

Would you deem it fair to have a president removed for displaying worrying signs of mental instability?

Would you deem it fair to have a president removed for displaying worrying signs of mental instability?

Sure, but I’d want the assessment to be performed by a qualified mental health professional and/or medical team. Basically, let’s follow the current usual and customary process for dealing with somebody who is a danger to themself or others. (And I say this as the daughter of a man who had to be committed to a facility specializing in patients with Alzheimer’s and similar. I know it’s not easy.)

I mean, I just want to be treated like a white cishet Christian male.

Yeah, me too.

Given that my family is full of this type of person, I know for a fact that there’s nothing magical about them. There’s no reason that they should get special privileges. No reason at all.

What do mammotheers feel about calls to psychologically examine Trump/deem him unfit for office for being too unstable/potentially narcissistic/mentally ill?

I think that such calls are unacceptable.

Trump shows some behaviours which can be symptomatic of mental illness: germ-phobia, aversion to touching, irregular sleeping patterns when stressed, etc. However, these things don’t make him unfit for office. One could be a fine President with such behaviours, whether or not they were the result of mental illness.

What makes him unfit for office is being an asshole and a bully. These are a) not things which psychologists are trained to treat, and b) not things which it is possible to remove someone from office for, even if diagnosed.

That said, if someone were to call for the constitution to be changed so that assholes and bullies were ineligible for high office, then I would be all about that; but let’s not drag mental illness into it.

So sad that Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom have dropped Ivanka’s brand.

Ivanka worked hard to steal those designs. Now what?!

First and foremost, like many others on here, I am frightened. I am a bisexual, disabled Pagan woman and I fear for my rights, the rights of my friends and family and the rights of all those who may lose them.

I do plan to join up with a local Indivisible group.

On a less important but still interesting note, anyone else find it hilariously ironic when a Trump fan fat-shames someone or makes rude comments about their diet? Not to body-shame or diet-shame Troompa Loompa but he’s not exactly thin or a healthy eater himself.
