So Trump’s Muslim-ban-that-he-says-isn’t-a-Muslim-ban is already creating chaos at airports across the country, as refugees and others (including green card holders) who were literally in the air when Trump’s plan went into effect have been detained for, well, whatever they are being detained for, as Trump’s executive order was a bit vague. Because he likes signing things and getting his picture taken and doesn’t really give a shit about the details.
This is something straight out of Nazi Germany, and that’s no hyperbole. It’s an offensive and unconstitutional act, opposed to everything this county should and sometimes even does stand for. It will make the world a more dangerous place for Americans, especially those serving overseas. It will be a powerful recruiting tool for ISIS.
So:
CALL YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS! Yes, it’s Saturday, but leave a message if you can, and follow up by writing an email. Call their local offices if you can’t leave a message at their DC offices.
You can find the name and contact info for your representative here, and for your senators here. You can find email forms on their official websites.
See my posts here and here for information and advice on how to make your calls and emails effective. If making these sorts of calls is tough for you, here’s some advice on calling politicians if you have social anxiety.
JOIN A LOCAL PROTEST IF YOU CAN! A spontaneous protest has started at New York’s JFK airport; it’s drawn several hundred protesters so far. Al Jazeera is reporting that “other protests [are] expected to take place at airports in San Francisco and Washington, DC, among other US cities,” but unfortunately I don’t have any info about them or contact info for the organizers.
UPDATE: Here’s a frequently updated list of dozens of protests with links to more info on each.
If you know of protests being planned, post what you know in the comments below. Thanks!
EDITED TO ADD:
If you’re in Chicago, there’s a protest planned at O’Hare tonight:
Chicago O’Hare Airport, Terminal 5 at 6pm today, Jan 28
https://www.facebook.com/
I don’t know who is planning this so be careful if you decide to go.
I found out about this in an email from Avazz, You might want to sign up with them to find out about protests near you.
Anyone else know of anything?
UPDATE:
Click through the Tweet below to see a Twitter thread with info on dozens of protests around the country either happening now or planned for the next few days. I’ve copied the info from the thread below, but the Twitter thread itself will have the most complete and up-to-date info and any changes in plans. Not to mention links that actually work.

Incidentally, did you see the White House statement for International Holocaust Remembrance Day? The statement which failed to mention Jews at all?
So, I want to call my representative about this ban, but I’m not entirely sure what the best thing to tell him is. Has anyone else who’s already called give me some pointers?
@moggie
yeah, saw that.
@IP
Those airport horror stories are the worst. You’re so exhausted and so powerless. I wouldn’t blame anyone who didn’t feel safe coming into this country.
@ Weatherwax – also done.
@IP
You’re probably safe, but if I were you I would not risk it. The US in general is not safe at the moment, so it is of course up to you but I can’t encourage you to visit. :/

ETA: Happy to be ninjaed by Victorious Parasol. High five!
High five to Kat! Good news should be celebrated by as many as possible.
I’m singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” right now.
@ Kat
Hell the fuck yeah! Take that you fascist bags of hate.
@Ooglyboggles
Woo-hoo!
Well, if there’s at least one upside to this depressing and terrifying story, it’s that now we have definitive proof that Trump is exactly the fascist shitskull that we were all trying to warn people of. It’s a small benefit, but surely eye-opening to people who had remained blind to the reality of Agent Orange’s presidency.
So how do we get him out of office FAST? The Republicans want to keep him in to get their legislation passed so they won’t help, and the Democrats seem to be still in a pity party.
WILL SOMEONE START IMPEACHING THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE BEFORE HE DOES ANY MORE DAMAGE?
(ahem) sorry. Got emotional there.
His first week… Good Lord almighty…
Love your hope, I Blame Myself
But I think too many people are living with eyes closed.
They’ll make the people who stopped this into the bad guys and the media will lap it up.
And I just read this:
That’s David Frum in the Atlantic about today’s order. Not linking
I imagine a role-reversed history where the United States were founded by Muslims and Arabians, and Europe was a war-torn theocratic hell-hole. There had been a lot of Christian terrorism, particularly perpetrated by terrorists from Europe. Ever since the 23rd Jumada Al-Akhirah, 1422, there was a huge amount of anti-Christian bigotry, which conservative types flippantly dismissed with “Christianity is not a race!” A lot of conspiracy theories surrounded America’s first white president, Baruch Heinrich Ostling, with some saying that he was a secret Christian, despite his repeated invocation of the blessings of Allah upon the United States, and his unfailing attendance at his local mosques.
In the 1430s, there began to be a great efflux of refugees from Germany, which had been fighting a long and destructive civil war. A few Europeans perpetrated a mass sexual assault in Damascus, and European immigrants were known thenceforth as “rapefugees”. This inspired anti-European sentiment all over the developed world (Arabia, northern Africa, the Americas). This came to a head with the American president announcing a “complete and total shutdown of Christians entering the country” in 1437, and implementing it on the 29th Rabi Al-Akhar, 1438, wreaking havoc on international travellers.
Refugees that had already made it to the United States were shocked and appalled that, having exerted every effort and made every sacrifice to escape Europe, they were treated as terrorists upon arrival, though they had not the slightest intention to kill and destroy in the name of Jesus, the Bible, and Christianity. Though their holy book contained accounts of the most horrid atrocities perpetrated by “righteous” persons and sanctioned by God, they ignored and disavowed them in favour of the “love and peace” message in the New Testament.
If the Muslim majority in America can ignore the heinous parts of the Qur’an, then the refugees can ignore the heinous parts of the Bible. Christians are no more disposed to violence and terrorism than Muslims! It was an accident of geopolitics, and not any divine or genetic right, that allowed Arabians to colonize the world and innovate in science and democracy.
A federal Court has brought an emergency stay against the Muslim ban. 3 things:
1)this is temporary, so this ain’t over
2)this doesn’t help everyone, especially not refugees
3)donate to/help out the ACLU, dammit!
Resist the fuck outta this shit
ETA: ninjad 😀
And now, from the Yellow Crested Howler… a backlash, in 140 characters or less
I’ll note that the stay on the ban only affects people who were on their way to the US when the order was issued. The people who were in limbo, in other words, on airplanes and the like when the order was signed. It doesn’t help everyone or anywhere near to everyone, so celebrations are not yet in order.
My wife and eldest son were part of the JFK protest. So proud of them.
@calmdown
Your 1st Lady avi perfectly reflects my reaction to that nonsense
As if there were a distinction here…
1)they can see ‘right’ from ‘wrong’. Unfortunately, their ‘right’ is for me and mine not to have rights
2)it is always, always, incumbent on the oppressed to prove themselves worthy of no longer being oppressed. It has also always been a fool’s errand
The only outlet worth a damm anymore is Teen fuckin Vogue. Interesting times, eh?
@Laugher
Genius…
@calmdown
All I got from that author is that resistance is futile, beg for decency instead because the real enemy aren’t the racist bigots but the 1%. Ha ha no. When was the last time minorities get to have the package of treated equally without tons of movements and actions to even make a single stride? Why the hell should I give them the kid gloves when they would grind me to dust with an iron fist if you gave them the option?
Trump didn’t mention the Jews on purpose. He was being “inclusive.”
http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/28/politics/white-house-holocaust-memorial-day/
There are reports that Customs & Border Protection is ignoring the order.

I don’t think Trumpy knows what ‘inclusive’ means.
