So here’s an open thread to discuss the inauguration of popular vote loser and possible Russian agent Donald Trump. No trolls, Trump fans, etc.
I think I might go all Chuck Tingle and live-tweet a bizarro world version of the event. Or not. I don’t know.
Trump may think that “patriotism” means “do what I say.”
@ lindsayirene
Whilst it’s tempting to imagine one book was “Art of the Deal” they were indeed both bibles.
One was his mother’s and the other is the one Lincoln used.
Does anyone have a Tardis so I can go back to 2008?
I’m glad I have to work today so I can pretend that this isn’t happening.
I will watch figure skating this evening and then maybe listen to some political music.
All these Republicans insist on using the Lincoln bible – I guess they keep trying to remind themselves they are actually the party of Lincoln, while pretending Lincoln would have acted just like them…
I’ve never actually heard any rumors of Lincoln grabbing a woman’s…cat. (My cat has been quaking in fear all day; she hates being grabbed).
I look outside and the sun is shining and the world looks normal, so why does it feel like it is all getting ready to implode?
The weather here is dreary, appropriate for the occasion.
Count me in as being in the dreary weather today too. It’s fitting, but also sucks because I love rainy days and hate seeing it being tainted by such misery.
For evincing such contempt of the Obamas, the Trumps sure do rush to emulate them… in some ways, at least.
After I watched the Trump inauguration, I immediately had the urge to listen to “Symphony of Destruction” by Megadeth. A bit dramatic maybe, but anyways. I’m currently listening to an album called “Themes pour la Rebellion” by Forteresse, which seems appropriate.
Sea Wolf, you could also try “The Eve of Destruction”
When Trump was sworn in I had an actual physical reaction.
I don’t think I’ve been fully relaxed since he was elected. And now it’s worse.
WTF have you done to America, Trump voters?
I watched Hidden Figures last night: A feel good movie about African-American pioneers at NASA, helping ‘Murica actually be great. Kinda fitting way to end the last day of the Obama era.
Today I woke up literally just in time to watch the inauguration. I put it on Rosanne instead (also an extremely fitting choice if I do say so myself). I’ll get to it eventually. It’s nice right now though because it doesn’t feel like anything’s changed. It’s still mild dread mode instead of whatever comes after.
I think they should have done it. Show the country just what kind of leader they elected. Don’t do it halfway; don’t be subtle now. Just do it. Then again, I guess people would just absorb the cognitive dissonance and normalize and exceptionalize it like everything else.
Somebody, please tell me this didn’t happen… LIE TO ME, PLEEEEEZE!!!
… from the Blustering Idiot:
Then why did you appoint an Education Secretary who doesn’t believe in public schools????
I’m in Kansas, I don’t know WHERE he is that the educational system is “flush with cash”…. Our good Governor Brownshirt even tried to get the Koch Brothers to buy him a State Supreme Court that would let him defund them completely.
RESIST!!
Empathy!!! I laid awake and cried the night of the election, and last night I was awake all night AGAIN, this time I was too… I dunno, hopeless?? to even cry.
RESIST!!
To observe the tragedy, I’ve been listening to Bach’s Passion of St. Matthew: three-and-a-half hours of uninterrupted mourning.
Ah, got the television changed (with no objections from others watching) and found a nice episode of L&O:SVU to watch on USA.
Criminy, it’s about a woman refusing to vaccinate her child and someone else’s child dying from measles. Damned anti-vaxx idiots.
@Weird Eddie
“Yes, it’s terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after.”
It’s from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode “Lie To Me”. I don’t have the emotional wherewithal to create comforting thoughts just now, so this’ll have to do.
@ Weatherwax
Thank you! You gave me a much-needed giggle!!
I don’t know much Buffy, having never seen it, but my ex partner has been saying for months that this whole eerieness seems to he like an episode of “Supernatural”….
FYI, White House’s web pages are now being scrubbed of mentions of climage change and LGBT rights.
Has any POTUS been sworn in without a bible?
Separatation of church and state? What’s that?
@Skiriki:
Wonderful. Just as they portended.
@Moggie:
I don’t know of any.
When I woke up, the inauguration was already airing thanks to timezone differences. At the same time, Animal Planet had “Too Cute” on. Whether it was just a coincidence and AP always has that show at that time or if it was a conscious decision, I needed it. I think I forgot to turn off the tv when I left for work…
FUCK. EVERYTHING.
I think I’m going to have to avoid Facebook today. I have step-family members who are going to be celebrating this utter catastrophe and gushing about how much better President Cheeto is because he used two Bibles.
Nope. Someone correct me if I’m remembering wrong- I think Kennedy said “affirm” instead of “swear” in the oath of office but every president has used a Bible to be sworn in.
Oh and healthcare, too, of course.
Today’s theme song:
Wikipedia says John Quincy Adams and Franklin Pierce used a book of laws, and Lyndon Johnson used a Catholic missal aboard Air Force One.
The oath as mandated by the Constitution does not include any reference to God, but it is said that George Washington appended “so help me God” as a personal thing.
Apparently Obama took both of his oaths using the Lincoln Bible and in 2013 also used a Bible belonging to Rev. King.
Still can’t believe he wanted tanks and missiles paraded through the streets of DC.
