#ResistTrump today by reading the declassified intelligence report on Russian hacking

Trump’s Russian handler

Popular-vote-loser Donald Trump got his official briefing on Russia’s hacking of the election. In what we can only assume was an attempt to counteract Trump’s brilliant plan to flat-out lie about what was in this briefing, the US intelligence agencies released the declassified version of the report yesterday as well.

You should download it (direct link) from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and read it, if for no other reason than to see how blatantly Trump has already lied about its contents. (If you’d like to avoid going to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence site you can download the PDF from The Minneapolis Star-Tribune here.)

The report is actually quite short; especially if you ignore the appendix about Russia’s propaganda outlet RT, which is definitely worth reading on its own though not quite as essential.

If you don’t feel like dealing with a PDF at the moment, the Washington Post has a handy guide to the important bits in the report.

Tomorrow we start in on Trump’s cabinet nominees and their ethical failings, in preparation for a week of CALLING SENATORS.

If you’d like to get started early, take a look at this CNN/Money article: “Trump national security pick Monica Crowley plagiarized multiple sources in 2012 book.” The title is fairly self-explanatory. She plagiarized A LOT.

Yes, not sure why you insist on misrepresenting what I said when everyone can see you are simply imagining it.

Trump has lied and changed his mind on so many of his issues and yet he still has support from his people. I would be very willing to bet if he abandoned his white nationalist anti-pc shit that support would wane pretty quickly, because that’s obviously what most of them are here for.

Meanwhile,
Valentine, I think PeeVee mistook you for Valkyrine and meant to reply to them.

I’m sorry you are finding what you are experiencing as blanket denigration of all Russians (rather than profound distrust of Putin and his regime) distressing.

Unfortunately troll Cakeful coopted your point before turning to general deliberate offensiveness. I gather Cakeful is really MRAL, who does that sort of thing often. (Understatement).

Back to the topic of responsible journalism and whether the WaPo haz it:
In general, what are journalists supposed to do when their sources tell them that hacks and social media troll accounts have been provably traced back to the country Russia, and that although it is suspected they are being done at the instigation of the Russian government, there isn’t yet proof of it? This may explain why media chose to report them at the time as Russian hacks, and also report the allegations, as allegations.

What part of the contention that they are now proven a Putin government initiative seems unlikely to you?

Talking about the 1% might be useful in certain contexts, because it really is appalling and indicative how much wealth in the States belongs to a tiny group of people. But you can’t make a political alliance out of the 99%. The 99% includes a fuck ton of rich white people without a care in the world. People who can’t afford to eat enough every month and people who are rich, but you know, not vomitously rich, do not have the same economic concerns.

It’s like peeling a rotten onion, there’s layers upon layers of “interesting” colors and features.

Viscaria,
Plus a considerable amount of non-wealthy people identify with the wealthy because they believe they’re just a tax cut away from some sort of economic boom that will make them super rich. Getting through to a temporarily embarrassed millionaire is next to impossible.

How is it that believing reports that show evidence of Russian hacking being a ridiculous conspiracy theorist but it’s okay for Proudfootz to be a 9-11 truther?

You better look out SFHC, he’s gonna come back and call you a creepy stalker!

Clearly the truth about 9/11 is one of those things that US intelligence agencies notoriously lie about, because they are a bunch of lying liars.

The people who voted for Trump are better off today than they were 4 years ago. In my experience, people say they voted for Trump because they’re uncomfortable with the increased representation of minorities, women, etc. in media and they’re angry that those same “undeserving” people have more access to healthcare and other social services.

People might feel “economic insecurity,” but it’s often a subjective feeling of insecurity that’s related to racism, sexism, ableism, etc. The solution to that is for people to change their thinking, become less prejudiced, and feel grateful for what they have. But they’re unlikely to do that if the attitudes continue to benefit them in some way.

Oh damn, Scildfreja, fair enough. @Proudfootz, I’m sorry for not investigating further before making fun of you for a position that you don’t hold. I have more than enough issues with what you’ve actually stated.

I could tell cakefull was not russian. He did not write like a russian.

Also thanks for clarification. Honestly i was still a bit confused but i just decided to leave it :))))

Really the washington post is just a small feature, your second paragraph is more what i am trying to get at. I do not like the washington post but i have not been able to do the research to get the sources or read the report so i am behind and i look like i jumped to conclusions.

I will probably stop here with my opions on this. I cannot say them well enough in english and they are just get me confused with a troll, which i am not. Also confused with a russian! Which i am fucking definitely not.

@ Valentine, I can certainly see how the Cold War imagery evokes some nasty stereotypes that feel very different to you and other commenters here who are from Soviet and adjacent regions than they do to people from the West.

For what it’s worth, when you said Odessa, and Euromaidan, of course I knew you are Ukrainian, but my grasp of the complex situation there is not very nuanced. If you’d like to give us your perspective some time, I would very much like to hear it.
I think maybe EJ was suggesting the same thing by asking about your identification as Ukrainian or Russian.

@ handsome jack

but they probably released the reports because the CIA has a bit of a beef with Trump.

It may well be that CIA are quite happy to show Trump up. The history of this matter goes quite a way back though. Some bits of the report (the RT stuff) were previously put forward in 2012. The specifics of the hacking of the DNC server were first picked up by GCHQ in Autumn 2015. GCHQ notified CIA.. CIA then reported that information to President Obama.

According to Obama insiders, a decision was subsequently taken not to release that information in relation to the election becuase it was believed Hilary would win anyway and the administration didn’t want to be perceived as using intelligence information for party political purposes.

CIA were asked to produce a consolidated report on the affair though but not to publish until after the election for the same reason.

@croquembouche

Excuse me i spelled your name wrong before.

It is not so much the imagery. We have a program here called Орёл и Решка, on that they did a series about how in soviet times people could only travel not out of union and then they did special episodes going to places like Minsk, Kiev, Odesa and so on. Opening credits had some old music, old pictures, the presenters dressed up in old clothes like the 60’s & 70’s. But this for me is okay because i know they might be doing it for the program but this is not the only veiw they have of there country. How could they? It is there country?

It is different when it is coming from outsiders. Specifically US, i am sorry, because for many there it seems this is the only story they have of Ukraine or Russia and also these stereotypes were used negatively before. Basically, like this in movies if someone is from Ukraine always the joke is about soviet times or about wheat/grain or basically just saying they are the same as russian. Here we challenge stereotypes, i thought. But now it is okay to make them because donald trump is an asshole?

As for Euromaidan i would discuss with you but you can see here i have now been putting my foot in my mouth for a while, and arguing with my friends and family about it is bad enough :/ many people also don’t give much of a shit, at least in Odesa because it is quite far from everything. My brother in Ялта is complete opposite to me, my parents and other brother live outside the country now since 2010. Also big problem for me is i speak only russian and small amount of ukranian, actually because my parents are russian so if i am speaking in support i will get called out for not even being patriot.

There are some good books that have been written, one called kiev diaries i think is good and is also published in english and german. I forget the author but if you Google Kiev Diaries i think you can find it.

Valentine, I may be slow but I still don’t understand what your objection is exactly.

I haven’t seen any such stereotypes of Ukraine or of Russia on this blog or specifically in this post. If they occurred in the comments I missed them. What are people saying that bothers you? Are they saying it here, and you want us to stop, or are they saying it somewhere else, and you are just venting here?

So far the only thing I’ve understood is that you don’t like that people in the US use the term “Russian” as shorthand for the Russian government in general and Putin’s people in particular. ??? That’s a complicated objection, because it’s both how English normally works, especially in headlines, and there is the fact that the Russian government being behind it was just an allegation for a long time. The only thing WaPo could report as fact was that the hacking came from Russia as a geopolitical subdivision, with the rest as just rumor. So “Russian Hack” is an acceptable headline in one case, and a good one in the other case. I don’t see a realistic solution to this objection.
