Memeday Pop Quiz! Men’s Rights Activist meme or White Supremacist meme?

Apparently her nose is never wrong

Memeday has returned! Today’s installment consists of a one-question POP QUIZ.

Question: Where did I find the meme at the top of this post?

  1. The MGTOW subreddit
  2. A Voice for Men
  3. The Daily Stormer

I’ll give you the answer after this weirdly filtered picture of my cat Sweetie Pie Jonus:

Actual entitled female

And the answer is: The Daily Stormer.

In case you haven’t noticed yet, the Alt-Right movement — or at least the publicly visible portion of it — is made up almost entirely of dudes. They don’t talk about women much, but when they do, they talk about women almost exactly the same way that MGTOWs and MRAs talk about women.

Oh, sure, the Nazi types are more into chivalry and paternalism and all that “Kinder, Küche, Kirche” (children, kitchen, church) stuff than MRAs and MGTOWs are, seeing (white) women as little more than pretty baby incubators. But the neo-Nazis spend at least as much time complaining about white women as they do pedestalizing them.

And, like so many white MRAs, complaining that straight white dudes are the most oppressed creatures on planet earth.

“We are the only ones without privilege,” the Daily Stormer’s Andrew Anglin wrote after posting that meme. “Every other group – women, faggots and all non-whites – is being promoted above us.”

Sounds rough.

So how exactly can you tell misogynistic Nazi memes about evil allegedly privileged white ladies from MRA memes about evil allegedly privileged white ladies?

Well, the MRAs tend to go with a different evil blonde lady in their memes. Namely, this gal:

I did a whole post about her once upon a time. The original stock photo didn’t include the gun. MRAs added it because they evidently felt she wasn’t EEEEEEEVIL enough.

@kupo

Also, who wants to guess that Spokane Guy gets his coffee every morning at Big Shots, the Spokane bikini espresso chain?

bikini espresso chain

AHAHAH you say that like there actually is such a thing !

… wait. There is such a thing, huh ?

@David

That makes sense. The dude is legit worrying, and he sees any disagreement as “bigotry”…

One thing struck me when Rodger happened. I spent some time reading his manifesto and watching his videos, and, honestly, the dude was hilarious. He had that bad-anime-villain kinda thing going on, complete with the poorly-executed evil laughter.

If I’d seen that shit before the massacre, I’d have laughed. Instead I found it deeply unsettling, but I still could tell that I’d have laughed if not for the dead victims.

I hope that’s not what’s happening right now with Telo Guy. I hope he doesn’t do something terrible, and if he does I hope his entertainment value is the only thing that ends up dead.

There are at least 2-3 independent ones here in Portland as well.

@David

Some people on his FB page say they’ve reported him to the authorities, which seems more appropriate to me than giving him publicity.

I totally respect that, but there is a conversation to be had about how not-uncommon this type of guy is, which is not had when we sweep them quietly under the rug for fear of giving them too much attention. It makes Elliot Rodger seem like an outlier, when we here know that he is just the logical end point of a style of misogyny that is all too common. More guys stretch toward that logical end point than most men realize. Only a few actually reach it, for which I am thankful, but I think it’s a worthwhile conversation to have, that women are in real danger from dudes like the Spokane guy and men don’t often understand just how real and how common that danger is.

I respect your position but I ask that you consider that against the need to raise awareness in the media outlets who read your blog. Just my thoughts there.

That will do.

@Spokane Misogynist

All I want is some female companionship. The same love you get. You owe me that much. I still love you.

That, is some Eliot Rodger shit right there (far from the only example, but holy seething entitlement).

Yeah, a discussion of this guy I saw elsewhere was crawling with dudes saying shit like ‘to her, its only creepy because he’s not a hottie’ or “Isn’t “creep” (or “creeper”) woman-speak for “unattractive guy who showed some interest in me but I don’t want to appear shallow so I’ll foist the blame onto him and imply that his actions are wrong even though he merely smiled at me and said ‘hi'”?”

Seattle’s King 5 news has picked up the story. They left out everything except for details about his FB post, where he claimed it was ageism, giving anyone reading the impression that he was 86ed for misinterpreting the barista’s niceness as flirting. A number of people commented on the article providing more details for readers, including that he’s done this at a number of Spokane restaurants and that he was expelled from Evergreen State University and fled Olympia, WA for Spokane as a result. He also allegedly has faced domestic violence charges a few years back. If you do decide to report on him, the comments are interesting to read. https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10154257019971476&id=6276351475

Edit window ran out: saw another comment that said he was banned, rather than expelled, from Evergreen State. Can’t find the original comment I saw, so not sure if I misremembered. Knowing my memory, it’s best to just read the comments yourself. 🙂

We’re weird, certainly by European standards. American culture is very much its own thing, and our attitudes toward sex are…complicated. Our attitudes toward guns less so.

I would love to see these dudes’ reactions to an unattractive older woman who, upon their smiling back at her, proceeded to explain how she had a ten-page manifesto about how they were biologically and morally required to give her all the sex she wanted because she was incredibly lonely, and it would be their fault if she snapped and killed herself or them.

Except that’s still not the same, because while they’d be contemptuous and probably alarmed, they wouldn’t have the same fear.

Hello.

> EJ (The Orphic Lizard)

Are there any other Vampire: the Masquerade oldtimers here? Would I be dating myself if I said that he were on the Path of Entitlement?

Oh, you mean he had created his own Path ? That would be the first time a Path would be based on trying to be pitiable (except maybe for the Via Pecatis, where you can use anything to get what you want ?).

Suicide chantage (blackmailing ?) is generally harsh to deal with, but with the reasons he gives, it is infuriating, not sad. People who never really had to deal with suicide and see it as a “tool” to get what they want better close their fucking mouth.

> On topic

People with penises pay for everything while i do nothing

Well, people with children pay, penis or not, for them, while the children do nothing ! Children, you are un-fair, according to Mister Anglin !
And why people with penises ? I was thinking that one by person who want one was enough, we are not sharks.

The “Free Stuff” thing, written this large and bold is disturbing. It is like a commercial, trying to give the person on the photo as “free stuff”… Are they not supposed to be professionnal journalists ?

Have a nice day.

@occasional reader

Suicide chantage (blackmailing ?)

“Chantage au suicide” translates most smoothly to “suicide threat” from what I understand. Though “blackmail” is indeed the word for “chantage”, it’s just this specific phrase.

Now, I could be wrong, ’cause I ain’t no engrish expert either.

People who never really had to deal with suicide and see it as a “tool” to get what they want better close their fucking mouth.

This a hundred thousand times.

Telo Guy is being mentioned on Twitter, too – apparently people living in his area have been well aware of him for some time now.

I ventured further into his blog and FB, and also found him covered here

He even has a YouTube channel. I could only watch about a minute.

eta: what is going on at the “man with a boner” thread? I’m off to have a looksie 🙂

@John, Occasional reader
Suicide threat is the common term in English, but blackmail could be appropriate, too. Blackmail implies an amount of manipulation to get what one wants that applies well to what this guy is doing. If it were more that the person had thoughts of suicide and was confiding in someone, threat would be more appropriate.

Thank both of you for the clarification ! Indeed, i was associating “suicide threat” more to a “risk of suicide” meaning, without any cold manipulation involved, like Kupo said.
Let us hope that nobody falls for his trick and that he does not harm anyone.

Okay, I’ll admit I don’t get this part at all :

If it were more that the person had thoughts of suicide and was confiding in someone, threat would be more appropriate.

Confiding about thoughts of suicide… counts as a threat ?

In “threat” I was reading the same amount of cold manipulation as in “blackmail”, and thought of the two words as pretty much interchangeable, although it’s usually worded with threat.

Confiding about thoughts of suicide… counts as a threat ?

Not in the usual sense of a threat, but the term “suicide threat” is used for most instances of reaching out to someone genuinely. It’s an unfortunate term. We don’t handle suicide and suicidal people very well in the US, and that’s reflected in our language.
