Richard Spencer came up with the term “alt-right” some years ago in an attempt to provide a cool-sounding euphemism to describe a bunch of people who might otherwise have been labeled “f*cking Nazis.”
This past weekend, Spencer and roughly 200 other “alt-rightists” put on suits to attend the annual conference organized by Spencer’s innocuous-sounding National Policy Institute and held in the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C. And Spencer apparently forgot the number one rule of alt-right club, which is: Don’t talk about Adolf Hitler, at least not anywhere where non-alt-rightists can hear you.
Spencer didn’t literally bring up Hitler by name, but his evocation of the old man was not what you’d call subtle. After most journalists had left the premises, Spencer gave a speech the Atlantic describes as “dripping with anti-Semitism” and blatant racism, declaring the United States a “a white country” that rightfully “belongs to us.”
“Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory,” Spencer called out, raising his right arm in what looked more than a little bit like a Nazi salute. Many in the audience responded with Nazi salutes of their own, no ambiguity about them.
Here’s video of the whole embarrassing spectacle, courtesy of The Atlantic.
You know that somewhere a Nazi romance novel exists. But there’s a romance novel for everything just like there’s a porn for everything. It doesn’t seem to be much of a mainstream theme.
The classic film The Apartment (1960) could have been called The Office with a Million Desks Crammed Together — although the second title is slightly less sexy.
I loved this film. Office workers are driven to distraction by office politics and sexual politics and loneliness. It’s a wonderfully hard-bitten movie with a heart of gold.
Is it a romance? You bet — one that guys like too.
Take that, Nazi “literary critic”!

@Aunt Podger
Weird.
There are romance novels (well, short erotic ebooks, really) with dinosaurs as the male love interest. I’m pretty sure if you looked hard enough you could find one with a nazi.
Actually, I’m pretty sure I sure one over on The Worst Things For Sale that had a nazi opposite some kind of anthropomorphic mammal. I think maybe a cat lady type deal?
I think I’ve seen some romances with unwilling/doubting nazis. Wasn’t the dude in the sound of music a nazi? or at least in their army? (honestly i haven’t seen it in years) in any case he wasn’t really a willing one though. yeah, but none with guys who were legit really into being a Nazi and neber regretted it.
*never
also that was a really bad description of the sound of music. Sorry, musical theater lovers.
Ao3 reminds me! A century ago in times of yore, I worked for an adult film place. The director was dead serious that women didn’t fantasise about two men. Ever. He said NEVER and got uncomfortable when it was brought up. His basis was that he knew all about women because he ran a porn company.
Tried to tell him women wrote sexyfic about two guys, that the interwebs was full of it. Nope. According to him, gay dudes did m/m (which was disgusting), straight dudes and women did m/f and f/f stories for a male audience. I would understand if I knew women like he did.
Dropping this for peeps dealing with Trumpists over the holiday

TLDW, take care of yourself, and it’s not your job to fix them, but, if ya wanna try, weaponized empathy could do some good
@Scild
At least the news media isn’t saying that these people are brave for standing up to the oppression of the white agenda /s
Silence is golden for the oppressors.
@Axe
Lindsay Ellis is one of few redeeming factors from Channel “I will fire everyone with little to no notice” Awesome.
@ Handsome “Punkle Stan” Jack
Man Rick and Morty is going to feel extra dark, I’m not even sure the writers who have to know that the totalitarian government is going to uncomfortably parallel with country we live in are going to do.
@Steampunk
I take it he’s never worked the counter at a porn store or even been to a fansite in his life? I mean, I’m not a Star Trek fan but I know that there was plenty of Kirk and Spork fics in those fanzines the ladies made back in the days.
@Ooglyboggles
Hooo, boy. There’s actually gonna be a lot of dark thing in Season 3. They keep hyping it’s the best one yet. They’re gonna be talking about Beth and Jerry’s relationship plus there’s gonna be talks about Rick’s alcoholism.
Also, recently, Dan Harmon did a long Tumblr post about how he’s not gonna think people are just “exaggerating” anymore when they talk about oppression and shit when Donald Dump won. Considering last I checked, 10/14 scripts had been completed, so the last 4 will probably be interesting to say the least.
There was a really really really super-shitty Christian romance story where the main love interest was a Nazi! Caused quite a bit furor fairly recently. I’ll go and hunt down the link.
Here we go!

Hey David, could you let my first comment out of the moderation queue, the link name caused it to drop there?
Anyway, here’s a link-that-contains-a-link-to-review about “when a Jew loves Nazi really much and it is supposed to be ‘inspirational romance’ book”: http://jezebel.com/holy-shit-who-thought-this-nazi-romance-novel-was-a-go-1722465991
@Axe:
@Ooglyboggles:
Lindsay Ellis is a treasure and we are lucky to have her. Some of her minions, like Kyle Kallgren and Todd Nathanson, are also amazing.
What the fuck.
The fuuuck.
The FUUUUUUUUUUUCK.
Christians masterbating to the Holocaust the FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.
@Skiriki, for shame.
Clearly it caused quite a bit of a fuhrer.
@Scildfreja Unnýðnes
Oh snap! You’re right.
Anyway, read the review of it, it was quite snarky, IIRC.
@Scildfreja
Snort.
Wait, here’s even better review of it. http://dearauthor.com/features/letters-of-opinion/joint-discussion-time-kate-breslin/
I don’t know if there is any actual data on this, but does anyone else have the idea that right-wing assholes think their opponents have the exact same motivations and would do the same things to them that they would do to their opponents if they were in power? It’s like their tiny minds cannot grasp the notion that other people have valid reasons for not thinking exactly like them.
For example, I am on a large forum with a politics section that has a lot of wingnuts. They are always ranting on and on about how “the left” doesn’t care at all about the plight of minorities. In their minds, if “the left” supports anti-discrimination legislation it can’t be because lefties want minorities to have the opportunity to live happy and fulfilling lives. Nope, it’s because “the left” just wants to wield “power and control” over those powerless, persecuted white Chr… OK, I couldn’t type that with a straight face. So I’ll call them bigoted asshole Dominionists.
The same types of people who sneered that liberals looked up to Obama as a messiah are now fawning over Dump like he’s the second coming of Jesus Christ. I certainly don’t know anyone who puckered up to kiss Obama’s ass, but these people have their lips firmly planted on Cheeto Jesus’s backside.
The other day someone I follow on Instagram said the greatest day of their life was going to be January 20th. I was like, “The greatest day of your life will be when someone who doesn’t know or care you exist officially gets to start screwing the entire country over? Really?”
So why are these guys not out cowboying and vikinging instead of conferencing like loser cucks?
@Kobun37
Well, yeah. Right wingers are all about projection. They not only think their opponents would do these things – they’re convinced it’s already happened. They believe that Obama is an anti-democratic tyrant who’s currently committing genocide on white people.
@Kobun37:
This isn’t just a right-wing asshole thing. It’s a well-documented phenomenon, and is mentioned in the seminal The Authoritarians.
Basically, everyone uses themselves as a model for humanity. Grifters assume that everyone is a grifter, charitable people assume that everyone is charitable, and so on. It is very difficult for a person to accept that they are genuinely out of step with the rest of humanity. You can tell a lot about someone’s worldview from their assumptions about how others will behave.
(There’s probably an essay waiting to be written about what this can tell us about the current American debate over police violence, but I am not the person to write it.)
Ever notice how calling someone a Marxist is the go to argument against progressive ideas like not being a dick to others,
but as soon as you point out literal Nazi propaganda or the fact that Trump is channeling Hitler you automatically lose because “godwins law”?
Apparently insisting on registering religious minorities and concentration camps dose not make you a Nazi but insisting on not being dehumanized makes you a Stalinist.
So yeah Godwin’s law needs to be suspended for the foreseeable future and we need a new law for gratuitous communist comparisons.
@Handsome Jack,
I’ll see your favorite nazi gif and raise you my fav ERB video
I keep forgetting how to embed, I’ll look it up sometime.
