@Viscaria

@Allan, my stepdad tells me to “vote early and often!” every single election and then he laughs uproariously, terribly pleased with himself and his dad jokes. I never knew where he had pilfered that from, until now!

Mr. Kelly was not actually the origin of the phrase, nor do I expect your Yankee (IIRC you’re a Yank too, right?) family members to have heard of his commentary. Rather, your stepdad is probably referring to the Tammany Hall political machine*, the infamy of which popularised the phrase throughout the U.S., although the original formulation is attributed to John Van Buren (On rather scanty evidence to be honest, but it definitely was current in the U.S. in the first half of the 19th century). Mr. Kelly may have come up with it separately, but he did so some three quarters of a century after it was originally coined.

*And there was a great deal of that type of fraud going on at the time, FWIW.

I voted Sunday, because I procrastinated.

EDIT:
@Troubelle

It’s a reference to a Milton poem, the final line of which is “They also serve who only stand and wait.” The line is usually quoted without context.

Redsilk – I’m in Ky. Turns out it’s for people who moved and it’s their first time voting at that particular polling place.

What that a John Milton reference?

@ Troubelle

That’s a play on an ancient John Milton poem, the original was “… they also serve who only stand and waite.” Meaning, (roughly), we all do what we can. Not meant to be sarcastic at all, either! You do a great service posting on this site, and I’m confident you do a great service in the cause of social justice as well!!

@Handsome “Punkle Stan” Jack: Ahahahahaha, haven’t seen John Marsden chicken rider before, that’s fair made me chortle. I haven’t played the game since I nailed 100% completion and all bar the multiplayer achievements in 2011 but it’s amazing how relaxing it is just being a cowboy. Might go for 100% again because why not?

Voted by mail. Trump vote is least important on the ballot, since my US address is based out of California; Blue State presidency, lots of important ballot initiatives.

Yes to pot, no to the death penalty.

Voted this morning, with my kids and husband waiting in the car!

After being utterly miserable through the whole campaign, I actually feel very chipper right now. Our long national nightmare is, well, partly over.

varalys the dark:

UK person checking in. Gonna try and make it an allnighter

I used to stay up for elections, whether UK or US. The 1997 UK general elecion was an amazing night. I got so drunk, then staggered down to the South Bank at first light clutching a bottle of champagne. I probably still have the notes I kept as the night progressed. I must remember to burn them before I die, lest someone else reads them.

It was the 2000 US election which cured me of staying up. I waited until they called it for Gore, went to bed happy, then woke up to a Bush win. So, fuck that. I’ll have an early night, in case I need to face the apocalypse with a clear head.

Okay, dirty truth: I’m not old enough to

Ha! “I’m not old enough” is basically your catchphrase around here ?

Is it a hostile work environment when your colleague is claiming it’s not sexual assault if you grab someone by the genitals because they “let you”? Cannot wait for this to be over.

Laugher at Bigots

@kupo: I’d say it is. Their definition of “let you” is: If you don’t pull a weapon on them for trying, you’ve let them.

Aaaah, now I see. I’ve noticed a fair number of recent blogs and news stories misunderstand how Silver’s model works, so I’m used to those objections. Biased or hyped articles are another thing entirely.

This is oddly topical. Just today a coworker presented me with a silly “psychological test” that goes like this:

Someone asks you to finger-draw a “D” on your forehead. If you mirror the letter from your mental inside-head view, it will be correct in the other person’s view. That supposedly means you’re relatively good at guarding your body language and appearance, estimating other people’s POV etc. You’re also more likely to be a fluent liar.

When this was tested on me (without briefing) I made a quick conscious choice to mirror inside. I may be hopelessly awkward with my body language but I do know how to communicate in symbols.

Then I cracked this joke, “If you asked Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to do this liar test, Clinton would mirror the D inside while Trump would come up with an R instead”

Citation very much needed.

@Laughter at bigots: Yep.

Also, if I grope someone without knowing in advance whether they want to be groped, I’ve committed to the possibility of an assault. Whether or not someone retroactively approves of an action in one situation doesn’t make the behavior acceptable overall.

Apparently….Though eventually, assuming I do not meet an untimely end, this will no longer be the case.

I’m old enough to drive, at least. Though I haven’t gotten my license.

I’m ready for this to be over. I’ve been obsessing over it quite a bit; doing a digital patrol route of Facebook, 538, and CNN. I keep worrying that some unofficial poll-watcher is going to cause an incident and that voter suppression efforts (today, in the form of inadequate resources and long lines) in communities of color are going to alter the outcome.

@ Kupo

Your coworker is splitting hairs over the description of behavior which is absolutely unacceptable by any description. It boggles my mind that people, generally cis men, think there is some room for debate on this!! My go-to argument in the past was “Would you want someone to do that to your daughter?”

Like so many other subjects, Trumpf lowered the bar on THAT one.

One way or other, it will be over in about ten hours and we can finally start picking up the pieces.

The only guaranteed good end result is no more clickbait news articles about the election once the brouhaha following the results dies down in a few days.

Voted at 7:30 a.m. in my teeny tiny rural town (population: 1600) and I was already the 75th voter!

The polling place has been jam packed all day so far.

So glad this is nearly over! C’MON HILLARY!!

Hello again, lurker just chiming in to share his weird failure to vote, basically my attempts to register to vote were thwarted, because i didn’t have a driver’s license or something, it got sent back to me after I sent it in for some reason. I also recently had a bit of a personal revelation about trump and his supporters that’s blindingly obvious to everyone else but took me till near the end of the election to get, sorry if I’m being a bother and thank you all for reading
Edit: also this was sent from my phone and I have pretty terrible grammar and spelling skills so apologies in advance for any typos or other errors

Turnouts are good, Trumplings already filed the first challenge lawsuit, in Nevada. The Cheeto is preparing to make good on his threat to completely disregard the democratic process.
