So it’s ten days until the election now, and I cannot wait until this nightmare is over. Talk about it, or whatever else you want to talk about. No trolls, MRAs, Trumpkins, etc.

I think you overestimate how much I don’t care about Trump. I care about his platform and views because he’s a presidential candidate but I don’t care to know about if his wife emailed him about dinner or his daughter sent him a funny cat photo or whatever the hell someone would forward him an email about.
I barely pry into the personal lives of people I like and love, let alone never want to even acknowledge the existence of.
You do you. I’m just spiteful and an ass.
@Axe Bollox:
There’s nothing ‘interesting’ about that: the term is used because its meaning is well understood. Might as well ban the word ‘hat’, you stupid weasel.
Zionists use it to describe themselves in a positive sense. I no longer consider myself a Zionist, as should any decent person who understands what’s been going on in former Palestine for over 100 years now.
For people interested in the latest FBI move, here’s a link from Huffpost. A lot of people are distinctly annoyed by this move.
Here’s an interesting, fortunately brief, discussion between Chris Hayes and Rebecca Traister about the role of gender and sex in this election. Traister quite neatly expresses some of my much more vague feelings about the way this has all turned out.
@Axecalibur: gotcha. So then, ‘Catholic’ is fine, but ‘the Catholics’ isn’t. Also, totally agree with you that ‘papists’ would be far worse.
When I think about it, I say ‘RCC’, but most people have no clue what I mean by that, so I mostly just say ‘Catholic’, and tell the nit-picky voice to STFU.
It does cause some cognitive dissonance, because we (Methodists) generally refer to ‘the Holy Catholic Church’ when we say the Apostle’s creed, but I manage.
@Punkle:
Nice try. The Clinton emails weren’t about that. Try harder. Or admit bias. Nothing wrong with that. But don’t play ‘holier than thou’…
@Policy of Madness
I missed that comment.
Well, then, I take it all back.
Obviously (obviously!) Gert is operating in good faith.
Gert’s messages are clearly some sort of Zen koan thing. They make us sheeple thimk!
So you’re admitting that you have no argument here. When your only response is NO U then you have nothing useful to say and you’re admitting as much.
We’re talking about the Podesta emails. What are you talking about?
@Kat:
LOTS of people are extremely rude here.
File a complaint with t’management.

“Holier than thou”? Really? For real? Since when is indifference to people’s personal lives being “holier” than anyone? If anything, I’d think it would make me a dick.
I. Just. Don’t. Care. I don’t even care if you care, either, but you’re being an ass about it.
You can be concerned about whatever’s in those emails all you want but I don’t see why you gotta tell everyone that they’re sheep or whatever you’re doing because they don’t care or don’t think it will amount to anything.
You’re not even making a point to WHY you think the emails matter, you’re just attacking people for no reason and being a general fuckhead about things, so, like, fuck you and fuck off.
@Kat
You’re cool. I was specifically not going after anyone here, you included. I don’t doubt your genuineness for a second. Others, I have a less glowing opinion of. Speak of that pain in my coccyx:
@Hairt
Her honesty has nothing to do with her gender. People’s appraisal of her honesty on the other hand…
Quite right. Interesting is the wrong word. Hows about shitty?
@PoM
I would like to petition the thread to start treating me like / calling me an astronaut. Maybe even a handsome velociraptor astronaut.
@ Groo, you have causality backwards.

@POM:
The wikileaked Clinton mails, of course (see Greenwald’s The Intercept). No point in talking about l’affaire Podesta: no one knows what’s in them. But it will be something!!! (“Dammit, what she up to! Someting!”) Wait and see. Not long now! November 9? (JUST KIDDING!) 😉
From mm’s huffpo link:
What a fucking baby. Of course people are going to question your competence and honesty when you do shit like this against the advice of literally everyone.
@Gert
No, only the trolls are extremely rude.
The rest of us are only somewhat rude and only occasionally.
I’m going with the Zen koan thing. Enlightenment — thanks to you! — is just around the corner.
If it’s any help to anyone’s frazzled nerves, the New Yorker is pretty fervent in its endorsement of HRC:
The New Yorker Endorses Hillary Clinton
The election of Hillary Clinton is an event that we would welcome for its historical importance, and greet with indescribable relief.

Axe Bollox:
Some People’s appraisal. Some.
Here’s the deal, idiot. We can all agree that gender equality in politics in desperately needed. With a level playing field how many women may we have to choose from? In that case Clinton would hardly be a favourite, IMHO.
A ‘bad’ female candidate in the WH is NOT a victory for feminism, as little as Thatcher was one.
K, link me to a couple of those emails that reveal something that’s in the public interest and which the public has a right and a need to know. Something newsworthy. I’m sure it will be simple for you, since you’ve read enough of them to form an opinion about their vital import.
@ Gert
So far, every email I’ve seen from Wikileaks (Podesta emails) meant absolutely nothing when read in context with the email itself. I’m stating an opinion on what I’ve read, and that’s all. I’m not going to comb through every one because I don’t have time for that. (Not sure what fear of Agent Orange has to do with it. I’m a US Army veteran, but I only went to Germany and Saudi. No Agent Orange there.)
However, if you, Gert, know of a smoking gun letter, please provide the link. Maybe you can change my mind. Evidence tends to do that for me. 🙂
@POM
That link was AWESOME! Thanks for sending it as it cleared up a lot of questions for me. (I’m still stopping at the liquor store on my way home though because the ups and downs of this election are killing me… chocolate-vodka or margaritas or both? Not sure which way to go.)
And here is a picture of my daughter’s puppy for brain bleach!
https://twitter.com/megalibrarygirl/status/789951323743498241 I hope it embeds OK.
@Kat:
BS. Learn to read and see what’s been thrown at me, for instance.
And you have no idea what a troll actually is. Zero. It’s just a word you throw at people you disagree with.
@Ohlmann
Thing is, France a) asked for that help, b) got asked what kind of help was needed, c) actually got it, and d) are white Europeans, which is why the U.S. the courtesy of a-c. None of these things characterize U.S. ‘aid’ to people who aren’t white Europeans, nor ever has.
@joekster
Economic aid is actually pretty fraught too. There’s a lot of issues with aid being tied to austerity policies on the part of the recipient governments, with predictably catastrophic effects. Also, much of the time the aid money is spent hiring foreign companies (usually from the country providing the ‘aid’) to do big projects of at best questionable utility to the supposed beneficiaries, and in the end often wind up actively harming the local economy.
Yeah, that’s kinda why they call themselves that. You could always go with the Roman Church if you really object, I suppose. You wouldn’t be the first or last Protestant to do so. Admittedly, you run into trouble describing the actual members of the church still, but it’s a start.
@Axe
My home state is blue on almost all of those maps. Which makes me despair for the nation, because all kindsa heinous bigotry permeates the political discourse around here (and in some cases the lack of political discourse), and that implies that it’s way worse in most of the country. I’m not even sure I’m koking anymore when I suggest that maybe we oughtta take the vote away from white people. Not forever, just for 50 or 100 years, long enough to get some kinda actual progress around here and maybe for whites to learn to play well with others.
Probably a combination of misogyny and assuming that everyone here’s a woman.
@Eli
When I’m criticising Catholic policy I always take care to specify ‘the Catholic Church’ or ‘The RCC’.
And just to specify, Gert, I’m talking about the emails that Wikileaks released, not that were released by the FBI or any other legit source. Because I’m becoming convinced that you don’t actually know what you’re talking about when you talk about these emails. I want a hacked Clinton email on Wikileaks that contains information that is in the public interest.
@Croquembouche of the Cosmos!
Looking good, traveler-predator of the galaxies!
PoM is absolutely right re Sweden/Snowden. We would almost certainly not extradite him to the US. There’s no particular reason to do so, and there’s also a sore spot when it comes to this particular issue, due to previous revelations.
@PoM
I feel like I should extend an olive branch. I don’t have any interest in open hostilities, even if I have deep personal disagreements with you. I’ll try harder to keep my cool in the future.
@Gert
When you come to a feminist site, start spouting misogynistic and racist bullshit, treat people like shit for calling you out on it, double-down on everything, and insist you’re the only enlightened one in the group, you’re a fucking troll.
