A theater chain in Melbourne has cancelled screenings of Cassie Jaye’s The Red Pill in response to a petition on Change.org. Good news for feminists? No. Bad news.
As someone who’s writing critically about Men’s Rights activists for years, including many of those who appear in the film, I ask you to NOT support efforts to get the film removed from theaters.
Yes, the film (which I haven’t seen) looks to be a whitewash of some of the most noxious people in the world.
But if you’re interested in fighting against MRAs and all that they stand for, attempts to get The Red Pill removed from theaters don’t help.
I’m against this sort of thing on principle. But it’s also a very bad move practically. These sorts of campaigns give the film free publicity. They allow Cassie Jaye and her supporters to play the part of free-speech martyrs — especially ironic given the ongoing efforts of MRAs and fellow travelers in the alt right to silence women and feminists through harassment.
It’s exactly what they want.
So please don’t start petitions against The Red Pill, don’t sign petitions against The Red Pill; don’t support petitions against The Red Pill.
Let it sink into the obscurity it deserves on its own.
EDIT: As I said in the comments, this is such a boon to MRAs I would not be shocked in the slightest to discover that it was an MRA publicity stunt.
Ever wonder if Markraig is in fact a barely-adequately designed text generator?
Craig, again, you make a lot of assumptions.
You’re not the only new face in this discussion. It’s my first time posting as well. Maybe I’m next for castigation? Somehow I think I won’t get the same response since I didn’t introduce myself by calling everyone here sheep with worthless opinions.
People assume you are a manospherian because you insinuated that the commenters here hate men and don’t want true equality. And because you seem to think that feminism is a single ideaology in which every person agrees with one another on all points, which indicates that you are not familiar at all with feminists or feminist spaces. Like, you can’t possibly think that if you’ve spoken to more than one feminist (unless you were talking AT them rather than TO them). There are feminists out there (and possibly some on this site) who think their lives would be better if people like me were dead, for example.
And walking around with your nose in the air accusing people with different opinions from your own of ‘groupthink’ doesn’t actually qualify as learning about other world views.
@Craig
We can’t feel threatened by something that never happened, Craig. You didn’t present any particular view. You simply pointed out what you thought were common viewpoints among the commentariat here. You didn’t put forward any arguments in favour of alternatives.
It’s like if you showed up to a coffee shop and shouted “I bet you’re all a bunch of coffee drinkers!” and when they said “Uh, yes? Why are you shouting?” you responded, “what’s the matter, group-think coffeeists? Is your coffee love crumbling to dust in the face of my bold truth telling????” You didn’t tell any truths, Craig! You just pointed something out that was not in dispute!
@WWTH,
good thing he was caught before he got to the ‘kill’ list. I hope he doesn’t have rich parents.
And ‘grooming’?! It goes with ‘stalking’? The english language sure has some weird twists.
@joekster (Bearded Beta), weirwoodtreehugger: communist bonobo:
Now, now, don’t be too hard on Craig. I mean, he’s evidently unable to go back to the previous comment page, where your answers to him are; he’s forced to remain in the most recent comment page. From his point of view, you haven’t answered him.
@IP: That is quite an incredible story. I wonder if Alan or someone with expertise in European law * might have something constructive to say.
*I realize that English law is different from Swedish law. But, an expert in English law is better equipped to discuss this than I am.

@Tizio: lol. Point of interest: I personally have not answered him. Nor will I. I’m a physician, not an expert on intersectionality, feminism, or anything associated with the above. Also, there are a few commentators on this page who are. So, I’ll leave it to them.
*Not trying to make this about me. Just trying to avoid taking credit for other peoples work.
Hey Craig, I bet you don’t like it when women talk too much.
Whoa, whoa, calm down, Craig! I’m sorry that my brilliant argument above has completely crushed your entire worldview. But there’s no need for the gnashing of teeth!
@ IP
There’s currently an investigation here into a number of suspected Nazi war criminals who escaped to the UK at the end of the war with a view to deportation.
We have set into motion deportations before of such people but they died before the proceedings were concluded; but there’s no time limit here for such things.
I’m all for that. You shouldn’t get a free pass just because you manage to stay under the radar for a set period. Such people never deserve to feel ‘safe’. They should just be grateful they escaped the hangman’s noose.
(I’m not going to lose any sleep about the rapist either)
ETA: @ jokester- well, I don’t know about ‘constructive’ 🙂
Look, trolly, you’re going to have to be more interesting if you want me to pay more attention to you than to Pokemon Go today. If you can’t beat “4x the candy, Cubones everywhere,” then don’t even bother.
Re: belated deportations/Nazis etc.
A mate wrote a song about this issue some years back. He talks about it in this documentary. However the main reason I’m posting it is because, in a nice bit of serendipity, the bloke with the beard is Oscar (the scary one eyed cat)’s human.
*warning for controversial views*
Oscar, demanding to know why the documentary isn’t about him.

@Alan
He was a legal resident for 30 years before they first decided to deport him, and even then he was never made aware of the decision until another 28 years layer. You’re missing the poiny by a million miles.
It’s very troubling to hear that you think refugees (“such people”) don’t “deserve to feel safe” after being legal residents for several decades.
@joekster
You’d think so, but it happens alarmingly often that Alan’s legal expertise is indistinguishable from dehumanizing brown people.
@ sillybill, @ wwth
And now, more women are coming forward to report assaults by the same man.
But we’re all just SO excessive our contention that our culture teaches and rewards predatory behavior…. right??? It’s the white men that are in danger!
(… sarcasm alert…)
@Alan Robertshaw
Are you sure that Oscar isn’t actually an Ewok? 😀
Yub nub! ^_^
[Emphasis mine]
You’ve got a problem with your warrants. You assume that everyone here supports all of the things on your list (except climate change, but we know what you meant even though you’re a very imprecise writer – and most likely an imprecise thinker as well) because we were taught to believe them. It doesn’t seem to occur to you that we could have come to support them through rational thought, extensive deliberation, personal experience, or exhaustive research. That assumption is very telling.
So tell me, Craig, why aren’t you out there trying to break all those scientists out of their “unconscious grooves”? I mean, an overwhelmingly vast majority of biologists “believe” in evolution; doesn’t that make them sheeple guilty of the worst kind of group-think? Aren’t they just parroting what they were taught to “believe”?
Or better yet, tell me why you think you’re capable of bringing anything new to this discussion?
Do you honestly believe that anyone here hasn’t heard dozens – in some cases, hundreds – of people spouting your tedious crap before?
@PreuxFox
Well, that’s fuckin ominous. No way this don’t get hella awkward, but I can’t unnotice it
@craig
Oh honey, that wasn’t even a single ream of hate. We don’t hate you. We’re not even angry at you. We’re just disappointed.
(I just did a quick search for that stream of foul language, too. I see the word ‘fucking’ directed at you once and your topics once, and one description of you as a “shit-and-run poster”. You’re pretty thin skinned, especially given your deliberately inflammatory posting style)
I think what he’d really like would be fewer copypasta meninists trying to dress themselves up as victims of those mean old feeeeemales, but I probably shouldn’t presume.
But seriously; this is one of the nicest and friendliest feminist-leaning blogs on the interwebs, full of reasonable and polite people who have frankly startling amounts of patience and willingless to engage with trolls. If you’d opened with, y’know, stating your position or arguments instead of a tired old sheeple argument driveby, you’d have received a bit less sarcasm.
I’m trans. There are a lot of TERFs out there that want people like me dead, or medicated into complacency. I think it would be short-sighted to assume there are no TERFs that read this site, although they are usually the minority in any mainstream feminist spaces.
@ IP
I don’t regard escaped Nazi war criminals as refugees.
@Alan
Good thing this story has nothing at all to do with Nazi war criminals, then? Are you saying your comment was entirely unrelated to mine, even though you addressed me directly?
@ IP
I think we may be at cross purposes here. You asked if that was a record for longest delayed deportation. I commented that there were some potential longer cases involving Nazi war criminals.
@Alan
So, you were not making any wider point at all? Your entire comment was limited specifically to war criminals? Then what was that part about “such people” managing to fly “under the radar” about? It seems very strange to start a discussion about Nazi war criminals in this context. I doubt you’d find many Nazi war criminal sympathizers here.
And that swipe about not losing any sleep over “the rapist” at the end – what was the point of that? Before he was a rapist, he was a political refugee who needed protection. Now he’s a rapist (who served his prison sentence, FWIW) who is 72 years old. I don’t demand that you lose any sleep over this individual, but personally I lose a ton of sleep over an immigration system so broken that it decides to deport an undocumented senior citizen to a country which he has never visited in his entire adult life, and where he has no social safety net whatsoever.
For context, Hassan II died in 1999. In other words, he was originally meant to be deported back to the same regime from which he originally fled. Since 1999, the current king is the son of the previous king.
Deporting this man is essentially a death sentence. Sorry, Alan, but I have zero patience for this crap this week. Human rights apply to everyone – even criminals. This is not negotiable.
I keep coming back mentally to Craig saying that we only believe what we’ve been taught to believe. Taught by whom? I grew up in an ultra-conservative little town in the district that elected Michele Bachmann. When I bother to look at my Facebook, my wall is full of ex-classmates posting shit they saw on Fox News or Brietbart. No one was indoctrinating me in liberal ideas when I was growing up. I came to them myself.
