In a speech yesterday, Hillary Clinton admitted what many have long suspected: She is an advocate of cat GIFs.
After reciting a litany of the horrible things Trump has said, she declared that his divisive rhetoric
makes you want to turn off the news. It makes you want to unplug the internet. Or just look at cat GIFs. I get it… I’ve watched a lot of cats do a lot of weird and interesting things. But we have a job to do and it’ll be good for people and for cats.
My own research has confirmed that one can indeed find many GIFs online featuring cats doing “weird and interesting things.”
Here is some of what I have discovered:
Feel free to share your own research in the comments below.
Or just us this as an OPEN THREAD to talk about whatever!
And hugs for Victorious Parasol and LG and everyone else.
It really, really is.
@Moggie
That’s…creepy as fuck.
I liked how they emphasized he was “legally armed”. >>
OT (again): I just filled in my mail-in ballot. When my dad gave it to me, he suggested to just vote no on everything since new propositions will just screw shit up.
http://www.reactiongifs.com/r/hdch.gif
(He’s also voting Trump, so, I mean, what did I expect.)
Thank you, Falconer.
Today has been a good, if exhausting, day.
“Doge” should be pronounced “doggy”. 😉
@Jenora
Parliamentary system is wild, yo…
@Jack
Well, he’s not wrong. Just tryna figure out how it’s a bad thing
He’s over 60, white, cis, hetrosexual and conservative and listens to right wing talk radio. Need I say more?
But, for fucking real, “just vote no on everything”. That is literally the dumbest thing I ever heard out of his mouth in the last three days. How long has he been voting like that?
How many other people vote like that?
Just…at least skim the fucking voting guide, America. It’s all I ask.
Handsome Jack: your dad may be a Trump voter, but he’s right that voter initiatives are a terrible way to make laws.
Often they are well-meaning but no fully thought out (like many laws), and they’re much harder to fix with the normal legislative process.
Sometimes they’re ill-meaning, with the text and ads making it sound like it does the *precise opposite* of what it actually does. Example: prop 1 in Florida this cycle, which is about blocking deployment of solar power despite sounding like it’s *for* development of solar power.
@Jack
1 is too many 🙁
@numerobis
Yes, initiatives are a bad idea. No, Jack’s dad isn’t right. He’s petulant
IDK what it’s like in Florida, but in California this year’s voter booklet does give a background of the proposition; a plain text version of it which breaks it down; the possible pros and cons; the possibly fiscal impact; web addresses to show who formed, proposed and supports it; and rebuttals both for and against each with the people rebuttaling attached. They don’t give voters only the proposition text. (It’s the usual, but I don’t remember the Obama election booklet being so thick so IDK.)
I mean, would people read the over 200 page booklet this year to really determine things? Probably not, but it’s there, and needs to be recycled properly.
@Owl
I kind of feel bad Ivanka because her own father creeped on her so much, if he was constantly sexually inappropriate to her it’s not surprising that she would have responded to reports of him being creepy as if it was no surprise
@Singerdog,
I’m not a long-time or regular member here myself, but hello and nice to meet you!
@ Axecalibur – where are you? You’re much better at this 😀
Who dares summon me!?
…
Oh, wassup @Mish? Newbie intro? On it!
@Singerdog
Hiya, I’m Axe! My dog’s more a whiner than a singer. Complimentary welcome package on the right side of the page, and don’t be a stranger 🙂
To sorta answer your question, to my knowledge, a hard consonant is one that can’t be held. A soft consonant can. After the ‘guh’ of a hard G, you hafta make a new sound. Gggggggggggggg… is only onomatopoeic when pronounced like J. Same with C. Ccccc only works sounding like S, or soft. So ‘guh’ is… jagged is the best word I can come up with. It can’t be smoothed over into a continuous sound. It’s hard, in other words (or at least that’s as best I can figure)
ETA:
So, can we talk about how my comment somehow appears above Mish’s? The fuck did that happen…
@LG All the love and healing to you and Mr. LG.
@Axe
thanks, sweetie xx
ETA – oh noes, my previous comment is doing THAT THING
@Mish
Anytime, love (time zones allowing anyway) oo
The Direct Reply Mammoth at it again?
I pronounce GIF as ‘jif’, mainly because I started out reading it as “Gee-Eye-Eff”, as I do with many acronyms and just ended up slurring the syllables together.
Doge I’ve always thought would be pronounced sort of like “dough-guh”. Not sure why. Possibly because I’m very tenuously familiar with German pronounciation and that’s the way that ‘e’s tend to work on the end of the words in that language, at least as far as I comprehend it. (Admittedly my accent in German is absolutely atrocious, so I could be wrong.)
Well since I’m here I might as well blurt out everything that’s happening so far in my life. I’m sorry, it’s a bit long. I have my daily pills, gonna get a refill on my own soon. It’s been pretty fun ever since I got prescribed them. My classes are going well. My Humanities professor seems to like my performance so far and I’m pretty sure I did well on an Anthropology exam I took last Friday. Math, well that first exam wasn’t all that great, but at the very least I did keep up practicing the problems until I stopped forgetting how to do integrals properly.
As for my hobbies, the Japanese learning is getting kind of, strange. By strange I mean I’m getting to the point where I can’t recognize the kanji, but if you say the kanji and show me a sentence I can remember it. So now at this rate if it stays that way, pretty sure soon enough I can hear a radio drama and understand what the people are saying. Even the grammar while I’m still at the level of a toddler, I can at least now say “Is/isn’t/was/wasn’t something. My other hobby gesture drawing, while yes I haven’t been sticking to my daily routine, is still helluva lot better than when I started drawing three months ago. I can actually capture the pose now and my sketches now look alot more dynamic. I still suck at the whole “color, shading, perspective, anatomy, details, proportions” thing, but I’m getting there.
As for my job, I forgot to mention that job I was talking about was only for a short while when I was back in another state. But they still want me back thanks to my earnest efforts, and I will take them up on that offer. I do have a new part time job as a note-taker for people with disabilities. Yay my ability to type out 85-100 wpm is actually good for something other than making posts on the internet. That being said I’m still kind of teed that I won’t be able to see that paycheck until the end of the month.
On the family side of things, well. For a while now I go back to my dad’s house for the weekend, and it’s a bit weird. I’ve never been that interested in material objects, in fact I hardly buy anything outside the necessities and a few snacks. So when my dad is, and to his own admission, spoiling me, it gets a little overwhelming. Almost like he’s forcing his gifts on me sometimes, I swear he even suggested that I should become a landlord, and rent out rooms to nearby college students. I’m still not sure if he’s kidding about that or not.
Then again, I do understand a bit why. He’s a guy that even when he was a kid, he’d try to do every skill there was that he could in 70/80’s China. And even when he managed to land a respectable job as an engineer, he went from sleeping with his shoes as a pillow to basically being really well off, all on his own efforts. Combine that with the fact we have almost zero contact during the entirety of my childhood, makes me assume that he’s doing it as a way to reconnect with me and make up for lost time. And despite the awkwardness, I do believe we are starting to get along a bit better.
On the other hand, there’s whenever he has a can of Budweiser or when he’s grouchy. That’s when the “I know so many skills at your age, and you have what, know how to use a computer?” or “Am I pushing you too hard? Is that too hard for you?” or “Can you get to be as successful as I am when you are my age?” come out. Or those times where he vented his frustrations at me after a few arguments with his girlfriend.
When I was done with a call to my mom, my roommate said I was a lot less lively, I really don’t don’t know what to think of that with what I know of both my parents.
I am practically a lurker, I know (on the grounds of “self, if you’re not sure about posting, then don’t” combined with a base-state of hanging-on-by-the-skin-of-my-teeth), but occasionally I remember that well-wishes will remain inaudible to you all if I don’t put them on the screen. So this is just to wish the best and send my admiration to those of you who are dealing with hard stuff (including, but not confined to, LG. I do admire your courage and generosity, and fwiw I also agree about putting your own oxygen mask on first).
(as most of you probably know just fine without anyone rattling on like I do) Doge is the same word as il Duce (very very roughly: “do” as in the verb to do, “che” as in Che Guevara), from dux = leader, and (Italian speakers, what do you say?) I would say “doh” as in dough or the note do (out of do re mi) followed by a soft “g” as in jam or jelly accompanied by the merest hint of a dying open vowel sound, “eh”, but only just enough so that the word doesn’t break off sharply.
@ sunnysombrera
I celebrated my 30th earlier this month. Based on my experience, and what I’ve heard from friends and family, it seems to be quite common for people ages 26-29 to feel bad about hitting 30 in advance, and then not care at all or even feel pretty good about it when it actually happens. I, for example, have just managed to mature enough to give fewer fucks about all the wrong things. Which has led to being literally happier than I’ve ever been.
I’m liking this age a lot so far. I would even recommend it.
Ye gods, all, sorry about my endless comment refusing to just join the thread like everyone else’s … :\
@Ooglyboggles – great to hear all your news. I mean, not all of the content is great, but you have so much going on, and much of it is good stuff!
Two things:
1. the few times I met up with my biological dad, he was similar to yours in the sense of trying to give me ALL THE THINGS. I understood why, so mostly tolerated it. You seem to have a lot of empathy for where your dad is coming from, even though some of his behaviour is less than wonderful – that speaks volumes for your emotional maturity and empathy.
2. apologies in advance, as this is unrelated to your post: have you watched Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso at all? Slightly random question, but my son and I just finished it and my head is full of the whole thing. As a fellow anime fan and all-round smart fellow, what are your thoughts if you’ve seen it?
Keep moving forward, as the Elric brothers would say. You’re doing brilliantly 🙂
I need a place to gripe a little.
I have godawful earworms of music I can’t stand, thanks to my car being in the shop for two weeks and my mother’s car having no MP3 hookup so I had to listen to the radio. It’s driving me to drink. The earworm I have right now is that eleven-blocks-fourteen-blocks thing where “party” mysteriously rhymes with “party” and “alone” rhymes with “alone.” Imagine that! What brilliant songwriting! I want to beat my head with a baseball bat until that song is pulp.
I have a good Pandora channel I can use to rinse out the earworms, but I can’t listen to it 100% of the time, unfortunately. I actually had trouble getting to sleep last night because of bad music in my brain.
Also: thanks everyone for the congratulations! I haven’t seen the increased paycheck yet, but I’ve already started to transition to my new duties, and they are much better than my last set.
@Oogly
Whoo hoo on your life picking up! Great to hear ?
Reappearing absentee fathers can be tricky. Mine showed up years ago for about a week and seemed determined not to make a terrible impression, so it worked out. I feel you on the dropping cash thing. PS3, doorknob, lotsa food. Weird…
I hope yours can learn to understand how he’s being shitty tho. That’s just not OK, especially taking his personal problems with his lady out on you. Be strong, buddy 🙂
@PoM
Earworms are the devil’s own. Even when it’s a good song, I don’t want to hear it all the damn time! You have my sympathies
dust bunny:
My reaction to the milestones so far has been, roughly:
30: Meh, still young, plus experienced!
40: Oh well, I guess I need to pretend to be an adult now.
50: OH GOD MY LIFE IS OVER AND THE GRAVE BECKONS.
Really not enjoying my sixth decade so far. I’m hoping that 60 is the point at which I give zero fucks anymore.
Moggie said
Also in my sixth decade. I had gotten to the point of “seen it all before” and then this election cycle happened. o.O
I didn’t get to OH GOD MY LIFE IS OVER AND THE GRAVE BECKONS until my dad passed a year ago. For some reason, Catbeast’s health crisis seems to have gotten me past that. (Catbeast is doing very well now on his kidney diet, potassium goo, and thyroid pills. Yay!!)
But then, this morning, I had a dream that referenced least two other dreams I had years ago where I got called to go back into the military; one where I went back to Italy and one where I went back to Turkey. In this morning’s dream, I was talking to a man on skype (who I didn’t know; also we were skyping on a big screen TV at a banquet type event) and telling him about the four (actually two IRL) years I spent in Italy and the two (actually one IRL) in Turkey. I am a bit weirded out by this for some reason.
Hi again! Sharing some useful information for those willing to support the strike in Argentina -it’s actually spreading to Latin America, so feel free to join in as well 😉
WOMEN’S STRIKE IN LATIN AMERICA: WORLDWIDE CALL FOR SOLIDARITY ON OCT19: https://www.facebook.com/events/599816086868312/
———————————-
A call through social networks to take action on October 19 grew into international strike and protests. Over 6 countries, 15 Argentinean provinces and 40 cities overall, are planning actions to demand the end of violence against women. Please support our actions by helping us spread the word! Stand with women in Latin America and everywhere!
———————————-
A teenager who was drugged, sexually tortured and murdered sparked a fire across Argentina. Women all over the country have been denouncing the torture and murder of girls and women since decades ago. In 2015 the protest “Ni Una Menos” became a nation-wide movement of protests for a life without violence. The horrible details of Lucía Perez’s death, and the example of women in Poland only days ago, demanded to take actions one step further.
An anonymous picture began to be passed around, with a date and a call for a National Strike of Women, in the name of Lucía Perez. Then a few of us created a Facebook event for it and then thousands and thousands shared it. The group of journalists “Ni Una Menos”, who coordinated the protest in 2015, called for a meeting with national women leaders and independent women reached through social networks. The strike was then official, and several unions and political parties confirmed their support.
Women in Chile, México, Uruguay, Bolivia, Perú and Costa Rica -and the list keeps growing- are organizing for action. Most of our reach is through social network and independent media. Please support women throughout Latin America and everywhere! Here are some actions you can take right now. We’re counting on you!
–> Share this and any other information about our strike in social networks and any other place you might see fit
–> Confirm your assistance to the events in each city, in solidarity and to help them stay visible. Invite other people to do the same.
–> Make actions to help increase visibility in social networks: take a picture with a supportive sign, make a flyer, a meme or any shareable image/text.
–> Contact the media and provide them with this or any information about our strike.
–> Learn and discuss about the importance of organized actions in the struggle for women’s rights and in today’s world.
Thank you for reading!
STAND WITH WOMEN AND GIRLS, IN LATIN AMERICA AND EVERYWHERE!
