In a speech yesterday, Hillary Clinton admitted what many have long suspected: She is an advocate of cat GIFs.
After reciting a litany of the horrible things Trump has said, she declared that his divisive rhetoric
makes you want to turn off the news. It makes you want to unplug the internet. Or just look at cat GIFs. I get itā¦ I’ve watched a lot of cats do a lot of weird and interesting things. But we have a job to do and it’ll be good for people and for cats.
My own research has confirmed that one can indeed find many GIFs online featuring cats doing “weird and interesting things.”
Here is some of what I have discovered:
Feel free to share your own research in the comments below.
Or just us this as an OPEN THREAD to talk about whatever!
@LG
I have nothing practical to add to the comments above, but I wanted to let you know that I’m rooting for you. I also hope Mr LG can get all the help he needs with both issues.
Stay strong, and remember to put on your own oxygen mask before you try to help others (it sounds like you’re doing this; keep at it).
Much love.
@LG
Big *hugs* and support, but no real advice .
I Googled the strike in Argentina and the first result that pooped up (typo and it stays because it is relevant) was an ad for a really exploitative sounding dating service for “western men” who want to date Argentinian women. Now I just feel sick.
@LG
I can’t offer any advice, but I can offer internet hugs if you want them. It sounds like you are doing what is best for you right now and that is the most important thing. I hope things get better.
I also just wanted to pop in and tell everyone that I’m still here. I’ve been lurking a lot lately since things are a bit hectic. I started lecturing this past week and spent the week prior with a cold. (It’s the beginning of term and I managed to catch ‘fresher’s flu.’) In other news, my thesis was sent to my examiners and my viva date has been confirmed for the end of next month. So close…so very close to finishing!
@Croquembouche
Teehee! Yeah… ?
OT: Some fuckheads were going to blow up an apartment complex/mosque.
Trump is aiming to win the WTF election (if nothing else), as he calls for drug tests before the next debate.
https://www.buzzfeed.com/katiejmbaker/trump-says-he-and-clinton-should-take-a-drug-test-before-the?utm_term=.anX60bnQY2#.uyVG6PDNmR
There are no words. He said Clinton seemed “all pumped up”. I watched the debate live (at stupid o’clock, as I’m in the UK). If anything, Clinton seemed to me to be extraordinarily calm and articulate in the face of utter inanity that would have had me blowing a gasket.
My best guess? Trump’s misogyny makes him see competence in a woman as unnatural, and it therefore has to be pharmaceutical in origin. Unshackled logic, I suppose.
Congratulations on submitting and best of luck with the viva, ej! You’re nearly there. Fingers crossed.
@Weatherwax:
I was going to agree with you that there are no words for that, but then the word “wut” came into my mind. I don’t think there are any other suitable words for that, so let’s just repeat it even louder:
Wut.
@ weatherwax
You know, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s copyright the Mayweather strategy when he was trying to avoid the fight with Paquio.
Trump demands drug test. Hilary days no (obviously). Trump refuses to debate.
@ Alan
Good call. Let’s see how this plays out.
Mentioned above: “… Iām adopting a baby kitten …”
Dang it, I could not find a GIF of a baby face superimposed on a kitten. Surely such a thing exists somewhere. Stupid google. Would have been silly, yes. Apologies.
Hilary Clinton watches cat GIF’s (hard G dammit!)? That’s amazing. This US election is getting very surreal. I am looking forward to following it online via this site.
ETA: One of my favourite kitty pics I found online:
I took my dog, Toby, to the groomers today for the first time. I’d share the before and after pictures here, if someone can talk me through how to. Presumably I need to save them online somewhere, but FB doesn’t seem to cut it.
He’s gone from being a very shaggy King Charles Cavalier Spaniel to a practically bald currently sulking cuddle monster. I’m feeling pretty crappy for having put him in this position. As a result of my mental health issues, he’d got quite matted and apparently had a number of stones embedded in his paws (I’m cringing as I write this), and he found the grooming quite stressful. My “friendliest dog on the planet” had to be muzzled as he was trying to bite the groomer’s face.
I’m trying to move past the guilt and just be pleased he’s ok now. I’ll just have to get used to his new “bruiser” look. Upsides: he’ll now dry off a lot quicker after a rainstorm (as we go into autumn), and I can take pride in his newly-revealed svelte outline (most Cavaliers I know are over fed; they’ll take a sit on the sofa over a walk any time and are masters at the soulful “you’re starving me” face), which all that fur had kept under wraps.
@ Alan;
I’d be thrilled if Trump wiggled out of the debate. Clinton has nothing to gain from it. LIKELY what will happen is same old same, Trump makes himself look more foolish, but if Hillary makes the slightest bobble, the right will be all over it.
@ Alan, @ Weather
… noooo… Trump demands drug test; Hillary says “sure”; Trump says “what do you mean ‘I’ have to take one, too, this was just supposed to be HER”
’cause I don’t believe he could pass one.
Top quality cat (and friends) gif in this Tweet: https://twitter.com/jackfrags/status/787329615895420928
Be sure to watch to the end!
Speaking of cats. The furry chap hiding under the table has been lurking around a friend’s neighbourhood for a while. No one seems to know who, if anyone, he belongs to. But now the weather has turned and he was just starting into windows. So this evening she’s engaged in a little kitty-napping.

It’s my birthday today. š I’m the ripe old age of 28. Trying not to panic about hitting 30 lol. š
I had to work today so celebrations were yesterday. I went to Exeter to do some shopping with my mum where she bought me a super cool leather jacket. Then drinks in the evening with some colleagues. All good fun!
@ WWTH
My friend has an existing cat but you’ll be pleased to know that after an hour or so of pretending to ignore each other from opposite sides of the room there has now been some initial cautious sniffing.
@ SunnyS
Happy Birthday ?!!!
TW for sexist tropes around sexual assault
So, I’ve spent a fruitful evening tracking down the Trump “evidence” showing the nine (unless another has shown up in the meantime) accusers are lying. It all seems to be focused on one (I don’t think saying “they’re all lying liars” is evidence); Leeds, from a first class cabin in 1979.
And, boy, is there a lot of “evidence” against her account! It was too aggravating not to share (note to trolls – this is how you make an argument; by providing citations for your evidence, so people can check for themselves whether it says what you claim).
1) the old favourite; she’s too ugly to grope
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2016/oct/14/trump-women-sexual-misconduct-election-live?page=with:block-58012f04e4b01ffb8ffcbba2#block-58012f04e4b01ffb8ffcbba2
(This was a live feed; the relevant part was at 8.17pm)
A few things to bear in mind with this “evidence”:
a) what a woman looks like in 2016 and what she looked like in 1979 are likely to be quite different. For instance, I myself looked like a 7 year old blonde moppet; less so now. Either Trump doesn’t understand this, or he thinks his audience doesn’t.
b) it couldn’t make the slightest difference, but I think Leeds is a good-looking woman, judging by her photos. I suspect the only reason Trump seems to think “ugly” might stick is because she has short grey hair. Please see point a.
c) the stories we’re hearing are not “Trump the stalker”, they’re “Trump the opportunist”. So why should we accept that he uses any criterion other than “they were right in front of me and I saw an opportunity”?
2) Witness testimony
Again, there are several points to consider on this. I’ve not read the original NYT article, but can only assume Leeds gave enough specifics for the exact flight, time & date for a witness to come forward. What luck!
A teenager, who would go on to be closely linked with the British right wing hierarchy and find himself fortuitously at the heart of several political scandals, was not only on the same flight but was also sitting directly opposite. In 1979, Trump was not a globally recognised face (not least because he looked much more normal then) and was certainly not a household name in the UK. I assume therefore that Gilberthorpe must have had some personal connection with Trump to have found this flight so memorable.
Gilberthorpe not only remembers Trump, but also Leeds, and that she was flirting with Trump. But he also remembers that nothing untoward happened. What superb memory Gilberthorpe has! He is surely a national treasure that should be put to use immediately.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/oct/15/trump-allegation-british-witness-anthony-gilberthorpe
3) Mexican conspiracy
Again, an interesting definition of “evidence”, but a Mexican businessman is manipulating the NY Times to create false stories smearing Trump’s good name. All Trump offers is the “ooh that’s interesting” school of investigation. But, as the NYT has pointed out, confirming something that the man himself has bragged about does not smear his reputation.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/oct/14/trump-groping-accusations-new-york-times-rally
4) 15 minutes
This is today’s and it’s my personal favourite. According to Trump, when a woman receives unwanted attentions, it only takes her a minute to slap the perpetrator or otherwise remove herself.
Therefore, an account which describes a woman removing herself after 15 minutes is demonstrably false.
Either Trump is as innocent as he claims of these, and any other, charges. In which case, what makes him the expert in how women react to sexual assault? Or he’s speaking from his own experience as a groper. In which case, I bow to his superior experience, but I’d like to see the data. I bet the NYT would print that.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/oct/15/donald-trump-drug-testing-new-hampshire-rally
In conclusion: Trump doesn’t seem to understand that flinging defences about left and right does not make him impregnable. It makes him look desperate.
I thank you and good night.
@Jackie
…Fuck. This is absolutely terrifying.
Have you seen this? Armed Trump supporters “protesting” outside a Dem campaign office:
http://www.newsplex.com/content/news/Legally-armed-protester-hangs-outside-Dittmar-campaign-offices-for-hours-397039141.html
The “protest” appears to consist of standing there all day, staring into the office, and making sure the volunteers see their guns. One of the two guys says he intends to “stand his ground”, a choice of words which some might find worrying.
This is just two guys, but it could catch on.
@WWTH: we have barred owls in the woods behind our house, and we hear them calling a few times a month.
Then, occasionally, I hear a couple of them caterwauling.
My folks have screech owls and barn owls on their land.
Haven’t heard the local peacock in a couple of years, though.
@Croquembouche: My word, what a jhaiph.

Heck, for women leaders, there’s even one nearby the U.S.: Kim Campbell was Prime Minister of Canada. For only a few months (June – November 1993), sure, but her defeat was more people still being annoyed at the corrupt politician she replaced as party leader than anything to do with her in particular.
