In a speech yesterday, Hillary Clinton admitted what many have long suspected: She is an advocate of cat GIFs.
After reciting a litany of the horrible things Trump has said, she declared that his divisive rhetoric
makes you want to turn off the news. It makes you want to unplug the internet. Or just look at cat GIFs. I get it… I’ve watched a lot of cats do a lot of weird and interesting things. But we have a job to do and it’ll be good for people and for cats.
My own research has confirmed that one can indeed find many GIFs online featuring cats doing “weird and interesting things.”
Here is some of what I have discovered:
Feel free to share your own research in the comments below.
Or just us this as an OPEN THREAD to talk about whatever!
That black cat gif needs a hockey stick. 🙂
@ VP Great news!
Heh. The third one of the cat on the slippery floor reminds me of our family’s cat, Chloe, when my sister brought her new beagle Buster over for a visit. And Chloe made the eventual mistake of running.
Buster chased Chloe down the (carpeted) stairs, across the (laminate) floor of the foyer, and then out into the (tiled) floor of the basement hallway… where Chloe made the turn and went down the length of the hallway to the rec room, while her pursuer missed the turn and slid scrabbling across the tile into the bathroom on the opposite side of the hallway from the foyer.
Buster just looked so devastated at how the floor had betrayed him.
Congrats PoM and VP!

I don’t remember what the official designation was, but as I don’t pronounce “graphics” “j’raffics”, it’s a hard G for the acronym.
Weatherwax is Best Pony for suggesting this thread (also for using the name of my favourite Discworld character). The last one on David’s list (kitten stretching its toes) utterly killed me. Can’t stop looking at it 😀
@Victorious Parasol – thanks for the update. I’ve been wanting to ask how you were doing, but wasn’t sure it was appropriate on the other threads. Fantastic news.
This one is kinda mean but funny:
Roomba kitties! It almost makes me want to get a Roomba, just to see what my girl does with it… (Run away. She’ll probably flee this weird tailless thing-that-isn’t-a-cat. Who’m I kidding?)
Re: .gif, I always think of it as “gift” without the t. And since the first place I saw it was in an old BBS tagline reading “Beware geeks bearing .gifs”, it’s a good mnemonic for the hard G (and a punny one, too).
@Vicki P: Yikes! That was a terribly close call. Hang in there. I’m glad you’re doing better!
And @PoM: Congrats! That is most excellent news.
Thank you, Fishy Goat, kupo, Mish, and Bina.
kupo, that last grey kitty is a ringer for my cat Ash.
As a former diver, I had to contribute a gif of a cat doing a fairly well executed back somersault in the laid out position

A little sloppy in the legs towards the end but nice form otherwise

Love the “skating” kitty. Wish my fat cat did interesting things but it’s really more of a subtle ongoing psychodrama with him.
@VP glad to hear your good news, wishing you continued progress!
@PoM supah congratulations!
@Scildfreya I, too, find the tiny fluttershy doll incredibly squeeeeeeeworthy
I pronounce it with a hard “g”, except when I am talking to my teenage son, who will impatiently correct me for being hopelessly old and out of touch if I don’t say “jif”
This is probably going to sound like NBD to everyone else, but I there was an owl hooting in the backyard when I took Bailey out to potty and I’m very excited about it. I haven’t seen or heard an owl outside of the zoo since I was a kid. I wasn’t even sure it was an owl so I looked up owls in Minnesota and the recording of the barred owl call matched what I heard!
It was so perfect for a windy October evening.
Sorry. I’m a dork.
The kitties gifs couldn’t be more timely. I seriously had it out with a family member who is a Trump supporter today. Not fun but utterly necessary.
@Victorious Parasol
I do hope you see much improvement in your recovery. Congrats on what you have regained.
@POM
Congratulations on the raise!
Re: gif
I always pronounced it jif since all the people I hung out with back in the day would say choosey programmers choose gif (like the peanut butter brand’s slogan at the time).
@wwth hey MN we’re sort-of neighbors, Nodak here! I haven’t seen any owls lately but I do feel really lucky to see a lot of wildlife here. Congrats on seeing a beautiful raptor!
However, I cannot get excited about wild turkeys, they are *everywhere* here and for some reason they incense me. Probably because they would poop all over my porch until I would bust out the front door screaming and waving a broom around at them like a crazy woman.

@WWTH
Don’t know about anyone else, but an owl in the backyard is utterly bloody fantastic. Spotting one where I live is a very big deal indeed.
Lucky you 🙂
We also see tawny frogmouths sometimes; not owls, but they look quite similar. Check out the babby ones:

Since it’s an open thread: SO got notice today that the budget is approved to hire her, yay!
Now she needs to move to the land of the midnight sun. In winter.
(We’ll be commuting for a bit.)
PoM: $7k a year raise — nice!
VP: best recovery!
Re pronunciation:
I side with Aragorn:
I always kind of chuckle when people ask if gif should be pronounced ‘gif’ or ‘jif’. Doesn’t that question kind of answer itself? XD. Now, Doge: doje, or dogé?
Victorious Parasol, always good to hear about your ongoing recovery.
Sadly, I didn’t get to see it. Just hearing it was pretty cool though! I live in Minneapolis so even though I’m by Minnehaha creek and there’s a fair amount of wildlife in the neighborhood, I don’t see all that much where I live. There seems to be an increase of predator birds in the Twin Cities in recent years (I saw a bald eagle near my moms place in the suburbs a couple of months ago) so maybe more owls will move in. We certainly have plenty of mice, chipmunks, and voles in my neighborhood and I see hawks pretty often.
Bailey went wild and started running around and barking so it might have gotten scared off. I sure would have loved to actually see it.
I’m with you on wild turkeys. They’re one of the few animals I don’t like. There was a flock of them by my old work and they would hang out in the street and block traffic all the time. I also no one who got chased by some turkeys. They’re such trolls!
I hope I’m not coming too close to doxxing myself by naming the creek in my neighborhood, but it runs through such a big swath of South Minneapolis that I think I’m all right.
@Croquembouche
Too much gif… Chrome crashing… Blaming you… 🙂
@ nequam
That sounds like the academic discipline of studying giraffes.
I’m in a less-populated area but we see a lot of the same animals – especially voles, what IS it with them? I used to live in a “major” metropolitan area so I enjoy seeing the hawks and weasels and rabbits and of course lots and lots of deer. Sometimes the eagles – bald and golden – stop here on their way to Canada in the spring and you can see 20 or 30 of them out in the field feasting on the mice and other little rodents. Last year we even had a pelican in our local pond (we live near a river but don’t generally get water birds here). It was HUGE! We do have a fair number of marsh birds, I suppose, herons and such.
The turkeys come up from the river when it’s really cold in the winter and they strut down the street 10-abreast like a Menacing Turkey Gang. ARGH!
I’m surprised that we don’t see more bats, though. I have thought about putting up a bat house but haven’t quite gotten around to it yet.
We’re going to the shelter and getting two new cats tomorrow~!!!!
*SQUEES*
I used to see bats when I was a kid but never see them anymore. I’d like to. I love bats. They’re so cute!
Whoo hoo!
Do you have them picked out already? Or you just going in and taking the ones who choose you? I did the latter with both Darrow and Dracarys.
