No doubt that’s true. I read some analysis of gamer gate, re. the “piling on” and one-upping the previous post’s hatred which talked about that. There’s no “just winning”, your adversary must be utterly destroyed, their cities thrown down to rubble and their fields sown with salt.

I guess that’s what passes for fun in that world. Of course there are always more enemies to battle, and, of course when the battle is over, I’m still the same angry, unfulfilled person, so there’s no serenity.

No it bloody well isn’t. Many radical feminists do hold that belief, but it is tangential to radical feminism per se, nor, as you note, is it limited to radical feminism. That particular belief is usually characteristic of Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists (TERFs), who are a distinct minority of radical feminists. As for the Fine Young Bloodsuckers, Matthew Rappard is as much a radical feminist as I am a pro footballer; I doubt he knows any more about it than he learned by looking up ‘radical’ and ‘feminist’ in the dictionary, and that’s being charitable. He’s almost certainly not just ignorant but deeply misinformed on the topic of feminism in general and radical feminism in particular.

I’m mulling a vexing question… is gaming “fun” for the folks who conceived of Vivian, Gamergate, etc?

Don’t know, but I can say that they don’t look like they’re having fun. They look like that brand of PUA who has made having sex a part of his identity, but who doesn’t actually enjoy it very much anymore.

What do they actually even do?

Their main skill is glomming onto money, basically. They’re like hedge funds in that they don’t actually contribute anything to the economy and serve principally to take money out of circulation (this is a bad thing, economically)

Alan, I think that whole smoking thing is more of a pop culture thing and not a smoker thing. I’ve been around smokers all my life and we’ve never really analyzed how to hold a cigarette or what gives off certain vibes. I do see a lot of it in movies and comics etc., though. Cooldude McBadass dangles his cig from his lip while driving while the neighborhood junkie can’t stop his hand from shaking as it lifts a cigarette to his mouth.

(For some reason my phone absolutely does not want me to type out the word cigarette without changing it inot something else.)

Heh, just shows how influenced by the media we are. But you’d be banished out onto an ice floe if you held a cig (ideally roll up but Galoise or soft pack Malboro just about ok) like a dart rather than betwixt your index and middle fingers.

Thumb and index finger is acceptable so long as you’re a cheeky chappy trying to sell some knock off electrical gear or petrol coupons.

Well, the semiotics of thumb-and-index-finger read differently than from index-and-middle-finger.

In the first, the smoker is not only unable to perform manual work while smoking (since their thumb is occupied), and the activity of smoking occupies the smoker’s focus (since if they relax their hand, the cigarette falls), suggesting indolence. The smoker is also subliminally signaling the “A-OK” (with their free fingers) as if trying to give a false sense of reassurance.

In the second, the smoker is still able to work, and the cigarette does not occupy the smoker’s full attention (since the cigarette is tucked into a secure position between the fingers), and the smoker presents an open hand.

The best position for a cigarette is, of course, clamped unlit in a corner of the mouth. This conveys absolute focus on an activity entirely separate from smoking, and the smoker is rendered mute, with set jaw, as both hands are free to operate on the task at hand.

Of course, I may be completely off-base here.

But there’s also that whole side v centre thing; perhaps best exemplified by James Bond’s introduction in Dr No.

Over here, tomorrow’s probably going to be our last day of summer sun – going to get into the 20’s again (Celsius) for the last time of the year. All of the leaves are yellow and falling, and it gets down to about 5C at night. Still open-window weather for me, but I’ve got a nice duvet and like the cold air. Very much a shame that I work inside! Perhaps I should try remote accessing from the laptop again.

I have no fancy sleepwear, tragically; my favourite’s a long tee-shirt that’s made of a light and slightly stretchy cotton lycra. Certainly nothing to write home about! Something to sit around at home about, but that’s it.

When we 1st learned about Celsius in school, the example they started with was 5°c -> 41°f. Since 5*9/5 is a whole number, it kept the numbers simple
