You might not think that a two-paragraph post about NFL ratings would inspire much, er, debate on Breitbart. You’d be wrong.
In this edition of Today in Breitbart Comments, we take a look at the Breitbarties who’ve worked themselves into a bit of a tizzy about Fox Sports personality Colin Cowherd’s claim that it’s the election, not anger over Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protests, that is causing a notable droop in the ratings for NFL games this year.
The Breitbart rage isn’t itself all that terribly surprising. What is a little odd is that some of the most virulent comments — of the more than 1700 that have been left so far — are attacks on trans folks.
Consider this unhinged rant:
Other comments on the subject are only a tad more hinged. Upset over the NCAA’s recent announcement that it will pull all championship games from North Carolina in protest over the anti-trans HB2 bathroom bill, Breitbarties fantasize about leading a counter-boycott — and exacting some kind of revenge upon their foes.
Well, that’s a little creepy.
But don’t worry! There was racism as well. Lots and lots of racism. Here’s a small selection:
This fellow earned extra credit alt-right points by working some homophobia in with his racism:
NOTE: This post is part of an ongoing series on the comments culture at Breitbart. These are the people Trump was presumably trying to appeal to when he hired former Breitbart head cheese Steve Bannon as his campaign CEO.

Colin Kaepernick’s Mom Speaks Out Publicly against Her Son and His Actions
True, as it turns out. His biomom (he’s adopted) has been throwin all kinda (polite) shade on Twitter. She’s a ‘don’t rock the boat’ type. Figures… Some people have been pretty jerkish to her in response tho. Apparently, your opinion doesn’t matter if you didn’t raise your biokid. Or maybe your opinion doesn’t matter only if said kid is mixed, I dunno…
Hedonistic bourgeois indulgence is what usually happens when you have the security and privilege to embrace your identity fully, and engage in whatever your whims of the moment are, and not give a fuck what anyone else thinks.
It doesn’t follow that you don’t have any particular identity or whims if you lack the security and privilege. It’s just that if they’re non-mainstream then they will most likely need to be tempered, repressed, or hidden for your own survival.
AKA Anyone cis and white. Mostly rich.
Hey David – you gotta take on this story. It’s just sooooooo….well fucking stupid.
Grist for the mill. Keep up the good work.

Let’s see if I’m understanding this correctly. An athlete protests the systemic racism within American society by kneeling down instead of standing up for the national anthem. And this is apparently the end of (white) Western civilization for ever more? Wow, talk about having a low opinion of your fellow members of the privileged classes. 🙁
I’m not going to lie, I have no idea who Colin Kaepernick is, beyond the whole kneeling thing. But I’m pretty sure that despite him not getting crucified for his actions, the sun will still rise in the morning and white, straight, cis dudes will still be firmly in power.
Breitbart comments are just bigoted brain-diarrhea.
I think some of the “LGBT+ people are all rich and indulgent” idea is because affluent cis white GGG folks are much more visible and accepted than everybody else. People with intersecting identities are largely ignored by the mainstream.
Sorry, I realized my comment was kind of redundant and pointless. Please ignore!
I know I always say “what Lea said”, but in this case I think I need to save that entire speech for later quotation.
Ah EJ perfect.
Just came on here to leave a message for you. What do you think this Europa announcement is going to be?
(I’m hoping big monolith, but I’ll settle for confirmation of ocean)
@Paradoxy:
Hugs. I’m sorry for slandering your new adoptive home. I hope it isn’t too unpleasant for you and the other awesome people who have to live as a minority there.
@Alan:
Best case? There’s not only an ocean, but the chemicals in the water mean that there are underwater volcanoes, which are some of the best environments for life.
Mike Brown has been agitating for years for a probe mission to Europa. He may get his way now.
Whenever I hear about something terrible from NC, I remind myself that Stephen Colbert is from there, so it can’t be all bad. I’ve also been there myself a few times, and have found it to be a lovely place, very friendly! At least, the community I’ve interacted with was always super nice and welcoming and generous. NC makes me think of the very soul of hospitality. I like it!
(Now I also know that Paradoxy is there, so , even better)
In unrelated news, looks like my lab just lost funding for the rest of the year, perhaps until next May. So… that’s fun. Good thing I have some money squirreled away. Academia sucks sometimes.
I live in a much more conservative part of the state than the Triangle and have yet to see any support for HB2 amongst the rancid ramblings of my coworkers. Mostly it’s just 1) Hate Obama 2) Hate Hillary 3) Love Guns.
Hugs, Scildfreja. Funding issues are no fun at all.
@ EJ
Yeah, I think smokers are the best chance for abiogenesis. Roll on Monday and the press conference.
@ scildfreja
Boo, that sucks.
Thanks guys. There’s enough in the bucket to get us to somewhere mid-end October, so that’s something. I guess I’ll have time to do my own stuff! Or, you know, double down on the studies. Gotta keep it positive. Job market’s lookin’ not too bad right now, either. I just don’t wanna give up my sweet-sweet-sciencin’ job for industry nonsense. That stuff’s boiled oatmeal.
@Scildfreja: Colbert is from SC, the politics aren’t better, but I love it anyways.
(the nick name is a bit of a joke on my profession)
He’s from South Carolina, actually. ETA: Ninja’d! But NC has Moral Mondays so that’s a good thing about the state! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_Mondays
I’m atheist but am culturally speaking from a progressive Christian background and find it a bit heartening that progressive Christians aren’t typically as politically active in the US and have let the right wingers completely take over narrative so that anti-choice and anti-LGBT policy is associated as the Christian policy. So stuff like this is heartening for me and helps stop me slipping back into smug atheist mode (I try not to do that, but it can be a challenge for me).
I’m sorry about your job. I hope you’re at least guaranteed a spot back when your lab regains its funding.
Wait, what?

The hell is this shit?? My mind is thoroughly boggled. Though I do have a few friends I’ve seen pushing anti-Hillary messages on Facebook, in Vancouver BC of all damn places. So maybe it should be less of a shock.
Remind me to stay away from Tripper’s people. “…find our enemies and teach them some lessons”? Something tells me that, even if Trump didn’t get elected, some of those types would attack their “enemies” anyway. The rest are probably only hoping for such violence to be legal first.
@ Lea: you’re onto something there, about Trump being able to win. If he were somehow better at using Hillary’s “un-trustworthy” reputation among people like my co-workers (with their whole “I’ll just write Bernie in on my ballot” thing), I’d expect a very close race.
Are POC all hypermasculine jocks or hyperfemme intellectuals? Shop at Breitbart, where they can be whatever you’re afraid of most!
Welp, I thought he was from NC, not SC! My mistake. He’s still Carolingian, at least. And that Moral Mondays thing is awesome. What a great movement – that’s what real grassroots looks like, if you’re payin’ attention, Tea Partiers.
And I’m confident that I will have a job if/when funding returns. I’m basically The Algorithm’er. I do the maths so they don’t have to. This said, I’ve asked that they give priority to my co-worker – he’s got almost no money saved up, and the loss of funding is going to seriously hurt him. So if they find a little bit for he interim, it’ll go to him first. Can’t have Mr Infrastructure go without rent and food!
Regarding Trump… ugh, I know, right? I don’t live in America, and I still hear a disturbingly large number of people saying “Well, Trump’s pretty terrible, but at least he’s not corrupt like Hillary.” Makes my blood boil – Trump is the source of the frickin’ corruption! Hillary’s as beholden to moneyed interests as any politician, but Trump is that moneyed interest. Why do they not see that?
(Oh, wait, she’s a woman who’s been the target of Republican smearing for the past 30 years. Right, that.)
grumble, grumble…
@Scildfreja
I thankfully haven’t seen any friends straight-up saying that Trump is a better choice than Clinton, but rather the false equivalence “they’re both bad, vote Gary Johnson!” sort of stuff, as if the last decade in Canadian politics wasn’t a big enough demonstration of how badly vote splitting can go in a FPTP system.
My son has started sitting down for the pledge of allegiance here. Fortunately, the school was understanding.
Commenters like the breitbart asshats scare me. My kids are biracial and I sometimes am scared they will be unsafe in parts of America or with cops. Since we live on the border of US and Mexico, we fit in… it’s very multiracial here.
@ Scildfreja
My budget was cut this year for book buying. I felt shitty about that. But I am really sorry your whole lab funding was cut. It’s scary when things like that happen.
