Hey, remember when Friday was meme-day here at We Hunted the Mammoth? We’ve missed a couple, mostly because of horrible things happening in the world, but we’re back!
Today, some of the weirdest pro-Trump and anti-Hillary memes I’ve run across lately. Most of these are from Reddit — in particular, from r/The_Donald and r/HillaryForPrison. Enjoy, I guess.
Now this last meme — which I’ve censored a little — isn’t really all that weird. It’s just kind of revealing, at least about the sort of people who sit around making anti-Hillary memes.
Yikes.
@sevenofmine:
I won’t use that word (or any other ableist terms) again.
That’s a solid promise.
Ok, I’m going to assume that the comments above were written before their authors saw my comment above, but, seriously, let’s drop it, and that goes more than double for Gert.
@David Futrelle:
Seconded. I will leave and not comment on this thread any further.
Thanks and good night.
Oops, sorry David. Scrolled right past it without seeing it, apparently. Mah bad.
Going back a few pages, Scott Snyder’s New 52 run on Batman is still my favorite comic line, so…
Recent Midnighter was pretty great, too. I especially loved his interactions with Dick Grayson. Hope that even though they’ve cancelled his solo comic, he’ll still be a big player in the universe.
Imma make it 431 comments.
Contrapangloss, it’s good to have you back. And congratulations on your puppy, soon to be your live-in furry companion!
Best wishes for the move.
@Viscaria
About ballet – my feet have mostly no feeling unless I do something bad enough to cause blinding pain in them, the doctor said it’s probably due to the fact that I started wearing pointe shoes at age 11. I didn’t even have to go professional, being accepted to the local performing arts high school and attending dance classes M-F from 2pm to 6pm after my regular academics was more than enough to screw up my feet. The plus to it all is that not feeling ones feet makes wearing 6″ heels relatively pain free unless I twist an ankle when a heel finds a crack in the sidewalk to catch on.
May I request an instant ban if Gert comes back in a different thread with a third consecutive meltdown?
@ dslucia
Since I mentioned the New 52, I don’t have anything against that specifically, just that my patience for reboots wore out a long time ago.
I’m seconding Petal here. This is the second time Gert’s done this same shit, and it’s getting to be a dull act.
I would have had him banned this time, but David’s site, David’s rules.
But yeah, moving on.
@pitshade:
Oh, I totally understand why people might be tired of the New 52 and rebooting in general, especially since DC does it so often. That was mostly a remark on Batman being “ruined” in the past decade. Obviously people have their own preferences and plenty of people didn’t like Nolan’s films, but personally between those and Snyder’s Batman I have a hard time thinking he’s ruined.
But then, I admit that I’m more a fan of grimdark gritty Batman with a mix of lighter stuff in than I am the, er, “sillier” stuff? Not expressly silly, but stuff like Batman: The Brave and the Bold and really old Batman comics.
I see racism, sexism and other forms of bigotry as unpacking into irrational prejudice and discrimination. “Mouth breather” as an insult takes a matter of ability and turns it into an insult, it discriminates a group of people as being worth applying to other people as an insult irrationally (like how “gay” can get used). Looks like ablism to me.
I have no problem with insults in general, but they should be rational and they should not apply people as if they are a slur.
Crap. Sorry David.
@msexceptiontotherule, yeeeeeesh. I’m sorry to hear that.
@dslucia
He got ruined for me, at least, when DC comics and all its media became ‘Batman, our lord and savior, sometimes featuring other super heroes’ to pander to all the people who think he’s an invincible God who simply cannot be beaten.
However! Scott Snyder’s Batman run was actually pretty good! Actually one of the better New 52 lines… Which admittedly isn’t saying all that much…
If people like Batman, more power to them. I just can’t really get into him anymore.
Im a Batman fan but, like that Venture Bros dude, I really am in it for the villians. If I were a character in the comic, Id be a detective who is skeptical of Batman and gives him a hard time, which is a character imo that comic needs. Batman is a rich white dude hunting down “freaks” who tend to have horrifying back stories, clearly Gotham has problems requiring serious reform, not the least of which is the parole process for serial murderers. Batman is needed, but he also represents, despite his shaky vigilante status, the power of The Man. Writers have played with this, like Grant Morrison’s Arkham Aylum. Speaking of which, One of my fav Batman comics is one of those alt universe where Bats is a 19th century director of Arkham Asylum committed to compassionate health care.
@Josh:
Well, I kinda view that as an oversimplification of things, but again, everyone has their own preferences, and I certainly can’t deny that being overexposed to something that one disagrees with or dislikes can help polarize them.
One of the main reasons I lost interest in the Marvel films was because for the longest time, no matter where I looked I couldn’t get away from people essentially saying that they were the greatest thing to ever happen to the film industry (not that that isn’t an oversimplification on my part), and it just tired me out on the entire idea of Marvel’s cinematic universe. So I guess I get it, I just don’t agree.
@ dslucia
I like most incarnations of the Batman, except for Miller’s and the 40s serial which started so racist I couldn’t even watch the second episode. The character is mostly iconic, it’s the story elements that stand out for me, and variety is the spice of life they say. But, I started reading DC in the midst of Crisis and have seen too many stories unfinished and/or erased to think much of reboots. That said, my favorite incarnation of the Legion was the Legionnaires title in the 90s, but then I’m perfectly willing to throw out my preferences if the story is good enough.
@pitshade:
I really liked Year One. It didn’t have quite the same level of wild over-the-top violence and pseudo-sexual content that Miller put into The Dark Knight Returns, plus it was a story about Gordon as much as it was about Bruce/Batman. Batman proper hardly even appeared in it.
I do think The Dark Knight Returns was overall pretty good, but I won’t touch All-Star Batman & Robin with a ten-foot pole, The Dark Knight Strikes Again was… eh… and The Dark Knight III: The Master Race has so far been enjoyable, but not remarkable and occasionally marred by poor art quality. So Miller is pretty hit-or-miss for me.
dslucia:
It should be noted that most of the actual writing work on The Dark Knight III: The Master Race is actually being done by Brian Azzarello. Though there were Waring signs throughout his career I think that it is fair to say that Miller has gotten worst over time and that he’s probably going to stay that way.
Frank Miller is super-hit-and-miss. I mean, Holy Terror is… yeesh. And it was supposed to be a Batman title, probably, likely, for sure. And All-Star Batman & Robin? Hahahahahahaha. No.
Year One was okay. I liked The Dark Knight Returns and even The Dark Knight Strikes Again just because it’s kind of silly. I haven’t checked out The Dark Knight III though.
@Zatar:
That’s how I feel about certain artists in the comic book industry, too. Frank Miller and John Romita Jr. especially, their artwork now is magnitudes worse than it was back in, say, the ’80s.
I haven’t read Year 1, or maybe I did back in the 80s and can’t remember much of it. Isn’t that when Catwoman got turned from a thrill seeking adventurer to another lost soul with a tortured past? If so, then I’ll give it a wide berth as she as been one of my favorite characters for ever basically.
Sin City, while not without problems, was mostly ok. It’s his default Noir stories but at least the characters are his own this time. I can’t help but think of him as a hack, or at best a one trick pony*.
* Now I can pretend to be in both conversations.
@ varalys
I really enjoyed our chat last night. I spent some time today, in between meetings and being yelled at (in Norwegian, so it was pretty ineffective 🙂 ) checking out the Misty stuff.
My memory had been slightly addled (think I might know why) as it was Jinty that Pat Mills originally created to field test gritty urban stories and sci-if for girls. Minty was set up expressly as a distaff counterpart to 2000AD.
Been checking out some of the Jinty stuff; it’s really good too!
Here’s an interesting post by the man himself about it all:
https://patmills.wordpress.com/2012/10/18/misty-the-female-2000ad/
@Alan: yeah it was a nice chat. I haven’t heard of Jinty, I was so oblvious to comics I thought were just full of girlie things. I shall definitely hunt some stuff down.
Thanks for the article link, Pat Mills is like Alan Moore for me. While I don’t like everything he’s done and think he has several unappealing tropes he’s tended to fall back on I still respect the hell out of him for all he’s done for the UK comic industry.
