Hey, remember when Friday was meme-day here at We Hunted the Mammoth? We’ve missed a couple, mostly because of horrible things happening in the world, but we’re back!
Today, some of the weirdest pro-Trump and anti-Hillary memes I’ve run across lately. Most of these are from Reddit — in particular, from r/The_Donald and r/HillaryForPrison. Enjoy, I guess.
Now this last meme — which I’ve censored a little — isn’t really all that weird. It’s just kind of revealing, at least about the sort of people who sit around making anti-Hillary memes.
Yikes.
OT, but I’m still enjoying this story. We’ve actually dug up a decent judge: https://www.thestar.com/news/crime/2016/07/25/man-convicted-in-mandi-gray-case-has-bail-revoked.html
No doubt Geert (not a typo) would call him a Zionist shill. Hey, look at that, I got this back on topic.
@SFHC:
Focusing on you would be too time-consuming. Dealing with your ‘instincts’ I don’t think I will do either. Believe what you want, belief systems, not evidence, seem to be your strong suit [cough!]
From the comments policy
Not that hard, Gert. If you disagree with the agreed upon community standards on ableism, just email David about it. I don’t think you’ll get anywhere because we already had a big rehash of these issues and settled on a new policy last year and I don’t see why he’d change the policy just for you, but it’s not going to be changed by you arguing us here either so that’s your only hope, really.
@ varalys
A number of our girl friends (and girlfriends) really got into 2000AD, especially after they’d read “Halo Jones”.
Agree with you about Toxic. Not just sour grapes that they didn’t take the stories (there was change of management so I’m blaming that) but the artwork was dodgy and it was trying just a bit too hard to be edgy I thought (Crisis could get a bit ‘preachy’ at times too, but great artwork). 2000 AD also went downhill. I think the Bisley era was the start of that. I did vow to hang on though until the actual year 🙂
If you want more info about Action my mate has a pretty good website (thesevenpennynightmare). He also does all the cleaning up for the scans for the reprint complications so you’ve probably seen his work.
I will now be also checking out the Misty site. Thank you ever so much for that. To me Misty/Action/2000AD is all one fantastic continuum. Moreso than 2000AD/Crisis in fact.
Seconding Kupo’s question, because huh?
Also,HI EVERYBODY! Sorry I’ve been gone, and I’m going to apologize in advance for probably disappearing into the ether again in short order. I’m kind of moving in 4 days, and am trying to pack all of my stuff into the trunk of my car, so I can transport my puppy.
Yes, I did just say my puppy.
His name is Olaf and he’s two days away from turning a year old (approximately) and he’s three days from being my dog because I can’t have him while I live in the station and he’s the absolute sweetest dog.
He also needs a three mile walk a day or he turns into an energetic terror-dog, but that’s puppies for you. Also, why his current owners are all like “PLEASE TAKE HIM!” because they are both old and allergic to the sweetheart.
So yeah, I need everything I’ve acquired in the past six years to fit in my trunk. So my six years of doglessness can be at an end.
I had my last shift as a career side firefighter Saturday, and am getting to hang on to my stuff as a volunteer until Wednesday, when I have to hand my bunks over because going to a fire the night before a 12 hour overnight road trip is just not a good idea.
So yeah. I’m likely to be busy.
BACK ON TOPICS!
Re: Jousting and the Pro-Pony Party
Draft horses don’t generally tend to do too well with weight on their backs. I hope they hired a show-vet specializing in equine back adjustments.
Re: Gert (Getting Extremely and Ridiculously Tedious?)
Gert, I generally try to be nice and explain things and not go into rampaging sarcasm mode right away… but I just skimmed through pages of you going:
“It’s not problematic because I say it’s not problematic!” and then promptly ignoring (or ridiculing) anyone who tried to point out that there’s a problem with it. Well, you were polite to dlouwe, so I’ll give you a tiny bit of credit for that.
Other than that one solitary moment of “Oh, ok, I get it”? Basically, you’ve made yourself a fine helmet out of your own posterior.
So I’ll be a little more blunt than usual: please stop.
Although, before you do, could you properly answer Kupo’s question? I’ll requote it here, just so it’s less ambiguous.
I’m curious.
It’s a flaw, I know.
@kupo:
Why is is so hard to accept someone may not agree with you on what constitutes ableism 100 %?
You (general you) want to talk about racism + power but are pro Israel to the point calling someone a ‘Zionist mouth breather’ is grounds to pile on Gert calling them a neo Nazi?
I could understand if it was the ‘mouth breather’ part as people consider that ableist here (fair enough).
But Zionist? Really? Pro Israel people use that to refer to themselves.
Of course people use it as an insult as well, because many people consider the occupation of Palestinian land, and the horrific treat they get everyday from the Israeli settlers, army and government to be not only wrong but illegal. The Israelis are commiting crimes against humanity every day, funded by the US.
Being a Zionist (in the sense that you approve of Israel’s occupation) is not a good thing, and it’s a perfectly valid insult, as well as descriptive word.
Just because Nazis use a word (and i don’t mean one of their ridiculous made up words, I mean this one, Zionist) doesn’t mean other people can’t use it and I’ll continue to use it in my life as it’s useful and accurate word to describe a certain mind set.
Not all Jews are Zionists, but most Zionists are Jews (except when they’re Christians).
Yay contrapangloss! Good to have you back.
Oh for Heavens sake you’ve called people who disagree with you Zionist shills!
@Contrapangloss:
Answered on page 8.
@Jennifer Hills:
Depending a little on how you define Zionist, I think there are far, far more non-Jewish than Jewish Zionists.
In the US alone, supporters of Israel’s policies, at least 20 – 30 million. Europe: very similar.
No, and that’s not what happened, so.
Nobody called Gert a neo-Nazi. We said “Zionist” is often used as an anti-Semitic dog whistle. Because it is.
What’s with the “pro Israel” comment? We haven’t even been discussing our positions on any of the Israeli government’s policies. Has it occurred to you that we have our reasons for thinking Gert is not here in good faith? I really don’t know why you want to side with a tedious troll who has acted like an asshole in multiple threads now.
@Zatar:
Again, it seems you have zero personal experience with the issue. It’s my longstanding experience that those who claim that term is anti-Semitic or mainly used by neo-Nazis are in fact supporters an enablers of Zionist policies re. Palestinians.
I called some of those (who claimed the term is suspect) shills, no one else.
@weirwoodtreehugger: communist bonobo:
I can abide by the comments policy, w/o 100 % agreeing with it and that is what I’ll do.
I interrupt whatever the hell is going on here to announce that I saw Ghostbusters and it was pretty good.
I know some other people have talked about it, but here are my thoughts. There will be spoilers at the very end which you can scroll past…if you can scroll. There’s at the very end.
Some thoughts:
-The trailer was misleading. Leslie Jones character isn’t the “streetwise” character but instead a metro station employee who reads a lot of non-fiction. While I felt her role could have been larger, she did use her history buff knowledge to point out and highlight crucial points. Her role still used some “hell no” humor but it isn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.
-There is some slapstick humor used, not overly used, but all the characters got squished or thrown or slip almost equally. I’d say Melissa McCarthy’s character had the most, closely followed by Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.
-There were also cameos from all three of the living Ghostbusters, in order of screen time: Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd. There was also a cameo of a very special lady which I will put under spoiler tags since it’s actually near the very, very end.
-Harold Ramis also technically had a cameo as a bust near the beginning of the movie. You can’t miss it. The movie is also dedicated to him. It makes me sad. :'(
-There were also cameos of some specials ghosts here and there.
-There were at least three, count ’em, THREE black people in the movie with speaking lines. Maybe four. Leslie’s was the biggest but she is, at least, not the tolkien, although I felt she had the least lines of the main characters, as long as you don’t count Chris Hemsworth’s character, who I felt had slightly less lines, maybe?
-The credits were awesome! They had pretty good music and a dancing sequence which I feel was a scene cut from the movie.
-The soundtrack is pretty good except for the Fall Out Boy version of the Ghostbusters theme. The only really bad thing about the movie.
-CRUCIAL: After credits scene. More below in spoilers.
The first, say, 20-30 minutes, eh, eh, as it has pacing issues (they established too many characters too quickly IMO but it is almost a 2 hour movie) but it gets better. A lot of the things in the movies will definitely remind you of the originals, as each character follows some of the original casts’ but they still have their own personality. There’s at least one or two scene particularly that felt right out of the original in a good way. I felt if it had slightly better directing, it could have been much better but still pretty good. Maybe a little heavy on the CGI near the end but it’s to be expected. Some of the jokes are hit or miss but all in all, it’s good. I’d give it a 7/10. Fun for the whole family. I will likely buy it on DVD for all the missing scenes this movie probably has.
Spoiler stuff:
-Big bad guy was a whiny white dude who wanted revenge for being bullied and not having his genius appreciated so he tried to take over the world using ghosts. The technology he used, however, was based on the stuff Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig’s theorized in their book. So, I mean, pffff. He could put things into practice at least.
-Sigourney Weaver cameo! Her cameo was slightly longer than Ernie Hudson’s, but she’s Kate McKinnon’s character’s mentor, Rebecca Gorin. Kinda sucks she wasn’t Dana Barrett but, hey, Sigourney Weaver!
-After credit scene involved Leslie Jones’ character listening for ghostie noises on a tape recording device thing. It hints at a sequel involving Zuul which I hope gets made because, yes, please, want.
Spoilers end.
It’s pretty good.
Gert: I have plenty of personal experience dealing with online Nazi’s and I can tell you it is a phrase they love. Not that you’ll listen since that’s clearly not your strongest suit.
@Alan: Glad I could point you in the direction of the Misty site, and I’ll definitely check out that website too when I’ve had a good nights sleep. Nice chatting with yah, g’night.
Gert, FWIW, I don’t think you’re a troll, but you’re being an ass. Seriously, give it a rest.
Let’s all move on from this fruitless debate.
The answer on page 8 wasn’t a particularly proper answer.
You took a question of the sort “Why is A okay, but not B?” and answered with “Because Y stinks so it’s okay and B doesn’t deserve it.”
To me, that sounds an awful lot like you’re saying it’s totally okay to use derogatory or discriminatory language towards any group you find personally objectionable but not towards any ‘acceptable’ groups.
It also kind of seemed like a flat out admission that you think that “mouth-breather” might actually be some sort of really mean thing to say, since feminists don’t deserve it…
But, I’ll let it go because I’ve got other fish to fry today. Not literally, just figuratively. It’s more like I’ve got 3 dimensional Tetris to master.
Edited to Add: Sorry David! Your stop request snuck in while mine posted.
Whoops.
@Jennifer
Our argument with Hairt has very clearly been about him using ableist language and racist dogwhistles. Nobody even really got into the IPC (AND WE WON’T, BTW! Nobody needs that). So my question is, why did you assume we’re piling on Gert due to our support of the actions of the Israeli government (which is an overbroad, and thus meaningless, accusation anyway) instead of the more obvious reason? Not a rhetorical question, and think before you answer
ETA:
@David Futrelle
Your site, your rules. But, like, does it even matter tho? I mean, literal troll or not… Distinction without a difference, mayhaps?
Oh, so Gert has experience with how certain groups of people use certain words and so feels it justified to side-eye anyone who uses the term that way.
ON THE OTHER HAND…
It’s horribly, terribly, appallingly unfair and mean and cruel and paranoid for regulars here to use their experience of how certain groups of people use certain words to justify side-eyeing Gert when he employs those words that way. Because Gert knows that Gert is not any of those things.
How incredibly convenient for you, Gert, that you get to judge others by their actions but everyone else is expected to judge you by your magical intentions.
Night varalys
Also incredibly convenient that groups with which Gert identifies don’t deserve to be called mouth-breathers while groups Gert doesn’t like do. Which, of course, totally doesn’t implicitly concede that “mouth-breather” is a super icky, awful, bad thing to be. Which, because of Gert’s magical intentions, doesn’t cause any splash damage at all. Nope.
@Zatar:
Nazis on this site? What, all 2 of them? 😉
No, it isn’t a term they love. Some maybe. The vast majority of neo-Nazis are simply far too dumb to take an interest in I/P. Also, they mostly hate Muslims/Palestinians, so quite a few actually adore Zionism for that reason.
Every Far Right party in Europe (bar Jobbik) have switched from anti-Semitism to pro-Israeli, pro-Zionist stances. Bar Jobbik, no exceptions. So some of these wannabe-fascists ‘heart’ Israel. See e.g. Geert Wilders, to name a rather loud and Trumpesque Reichwinger.
You know zilch about Zionism, that much is clear.
