Once upon a time, or so the story goes, a reporter asked Gandhi what he thought of Western civilization.
“I think it would be a good idea,” Gandhi is said to have replied.
This story kept popping into my head as I worked my way through the seemingly unending torrent of horrendous Tweets that comprise the #FightForWesternCivilization hashtag on Twitter. I discovered the hashtag last night while looking at the reactions of assorted Internet-famous Nazis and their fellow travellers to the horrific attack in Nice yesterday. (You can see the results of this investigation in my previous post here.)
Even a quick glance at the #FightForWesternCivilization hashtag reveals that these would-be defenders of Western Civilization have a very strange notion of what civilization consists of, with some taking inspiration not just from Donald Trump, their lord and master, but from such historical figures as Adolph Hitler and Augusto Pinochet. The hashtag is lousy with raging Islamophobes and white supremacists, full of violent fantasies of retribution against the Muslim “invaders.”
Never mind that we don’t even know if the apparent killer in Nice was even motivated by radical Islam; neighbors told a French television station that Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel was less into religion than he was into women and salsa dancing. Local mosques say he never stepped through their doors.
But his name is Mohamed, so to those posting in the #FightForWesternCivilization hashtag he is not only a radical Islamist but the representative of all of the world’s Muslims.
As many of these self-declared civilization-defenders see it, Muslims are “savages” who need to be expelled from Europe and the US.
#FightForWesternCivilization Deport them. Burn their mosques to the ground. Let them live in the sand and filth best suited to savages.

This imagined Western Civilization that these people think they’re fighting for isn’t a place I want to live.
Since the only nation the Crusades did any permanent damage to was Byzantium, should I assume Greece doesn’t count as part of western civilisation either? In that case, someone should inform the entire greek right wing of this. They might just have a collective stroke.
Do none of these people understand how war works? The point of the crusades had very little to do with “defending western civilization from the eastern barbarians”, it was about a)dealing with overpopulation by getting all the poor people killed, b)colonizing the east, c)resources. Taking back holy places and defending christianity and all that was an excuse and a motivational slogan.
Fun fact: during the fourth crusade aiming to reconquer Jerusalem, the leaders were asked by dethroned Byzantine prince Alexios Angelos to get him his throne back. So they turned around, went to Constantinople, conquered the city and pillaged the place for three days straight before going home. Defending western civilization, my ass.
@EJ (TOO)
Aww, thanks! Sometimes my depression tells me no one cares what I have to say, so it’s always good to get feedback from others (even if the feedback confirms what my depression says it’s still useful).
@me: I don’t really like the tone of my comment upon re-reading it, but I felt I had to add my two cents on the “why these people are wrong about the crusades” pile, because they just annoyed me so much. I had to learn these things, goddamn it. You don’t get to attach your bullshit ideology to things you don’t even understand.
@EpicurusHog: Reality has never stopped them before, so I don’t see why it would now.
@Phryne: Thank you. I did have a great deal of trouble figuring out when I was being offensive in medical school (and residency, actually), so feedback is important. If you’ve got any questions, feel free to ask, but it might be better to ask me on an open thread so we don’t de-rail this thread 🙂 I finished my internal medicine residency last year, and I’m finishing up a geriatrics fellowship now (off-cycle).
@Axcalibur: I think I may be over-compensating for my own privilege (and I’m afraid I may be deflecting the thread). I know many of the people here have been kept down and oppressed in ways I can’t fully appreciate, and I’m trying to avoid adding to that, given my own tendency to be offensive without realizing it. I do think of myself as outside this community, because I haven’t experienced the same trouble that many of you have. That’s not meant to imply any failure of your community: from what I’ve seen, you’re remarkably supportive, and that’s good.
Quick point: I wasn’t referring to bullies in my previous post: I was referring to the various physicians (and occasionally my fellow students) who have been responsible for my training at one time or another. I had a lot of trouble my first couple years of medical school, and quite a few people (including me at one time or another) questioned if I was in the right place. That’s all. It’s nothing compared to some of your stories.
@PI: Thanks. I sometimes think the only reason my residency director put up with me for three years is my ability to incorporate feedback and constructive criticism. I try to be open to the notion that I could be wrong about any given thing, and it’s allowed me to grow quite a bit in the past decade. Fifteen years ago, I may have responded the same way I’ve seen some of the trolls respond. I learned otherwise.
@Viscaria: I just looked back, and I think the offending comment was deleted. Reviewing it in my mind, I can see how it would read ‘homophobia is a product of the gays’. I think I know where my mistake was, but I’ll drop the subject. PI has mentioned that the theory that homophobia results from repressed homosexuality is used to dodge the responsibility that heterosexuals have for homophobia, and I agree that that is wrong (both morally and in actuality)
@EJ: That’s fascinating info about the Maronites. I hadn’t known that they were out of communion with Rome for so long. It would explain why my colleague never took us up on our offer to join my wife and I for mass at my wife’s church. It sounds a bit like what Rome’s done with the Eastern Rite and what Benedict tried to do with the Anglican rite. I’m not Catholic myself, so let me know if it’s a bad example.
@EpicurusHog: I always thought the 4th crusade was sidelined by the Venetians. But, come to think of it, I do recall reading something about them using a de-throned Byzantine emperor as an excuse. I think it was in one of the Norwich books.
@PI: as a professional graphic designer, do you have any comment on the short-lived Trump-Pence logo which has led to so much unseemly mirth in anti-Trump circles.
http://cdn.thedailybeast.com/content/dailybeast/articles/2016/07/15/twitter-reacts-to-terrible-new-trump-pence-campaign-logo/jcr:content/image.crop.800.500.jpg/48953395.cached.jpg
I kind of get that they’re going for the flag, but it looks odd with the blue square meeting the bottom of the red stripes. All in all, it’s not bad, just odd-looking, especially with the way the letters overlap.
[Professional Mode]
Personally, I would have added a few more red bars on the bottom. The T and P would be less prominent, but the image of the American flag would have been a lot stronger, and since Trump/Pence is running on such a huge ‘Murrica-style platform, making their logo look more like the American flag would have been much better, and it would be as patriotic as possible.
As for the names, it’s odd that Pence’s name is smaller than Trump’s. I get it that Trump’s the one running for president, but Pence is supposed to be his running mate. Pence is going to draw a lot of Republicans back to Trump’s side, so he’s just as important, if not more important than Trump himself.
So, I would have made the names equal size, especially since they’re the same number of letters. It also throws off the balance a bit because the spine of the “P” in Pence doesn’t line up with the end of the “T” in “Trump”, so the whole thing looks kind of lopsided.
The names and tagline should be all lined up and all end at the same points on either side, just to make it visually balanced and less ragged, in my opinion.
Either that, or at least line up all the letters in Pence’s name with Trump’s. That would also help it look a lot less lop-sided.
[/Professional Mode]
All that professionalism aside however, I will say that as a queer person, all the jokes about buttsex I’m seeing about it makes me really uncomfortable, especially considering how very homophobic Pence is. It smacks of “Homophobes are all secretly in the closet!”, and I’ve spoken out about that a few times recently (this thread included) and why it’s not a good thing.
Like, really? That’s the best we can come up with? “Lol, the logo looks like Trump’s fucking Pence in his P-hole!”
Can’t we just continue to talk about how much of a fucking fascist Trump is and what a gods-awful bigot Pence is? I mean, he’s homophobic as fuck, he’s going to try and reverse abortion bills, he believes that we should use Christianity as a guideline for legislation, the list goes on.
There’s plenty to fucking mock and deride there without jumping to “lol, homosexuality!”
@GoM
It manages to combine violent imagery (it’s a sideways fist) with a wanking dick, so… It’s pretty much a perfect representation of Trump. =P
I really appreciate this tweet on the subject, actually.
I was mostly referring to the fact that — like most things involving Trump — nobody seems to really think seriously about whether something they say or do makes any sense until after the fact. I mean, logos aren’t the most important thing in the world, but you do need to make sure that the logo doesn’t actually damage the message you’re trying to project. I was involved in the Appalachian Mountain Club back in the 80s when some people decided our existing logo wasn’t “professional” enough, so they commissioned a new one that just looked too corporate-y, which is not what you want for an outdoorsy environmentalist group.
I wasn’t particularly thinking of the homophobic aspect — with Trump’s people that’s sort of a given — but in fact that might not resonate well with his strongly homophobic base (that is, it’s a mistake, but probably not a yuuge one). I was mainly thinking of how it reinforced the “Trump screws everyone who works with him” meme. I mean, you don’t want to make it easy for the other side. It would be like Clinton choosing a logo that looks crooked — you don’t need to constantly remind everyone about the other side’s memes.
@Phryne
I had the vague thought that “poodle don’t like you” was a meme that was new to me. Maybe something they say on My Little Pony videos?
Now I know how my poor mother felt — she couldn’t tell John from Paul from George from Ringo. Her ignorance was shocking.
This is the first time I’ve seen the trump-pence graphic. Agree that it looks like the T is diddling the P, but that could just as easily imply that Pence is a woman (which would be equally troubling).
I agree with PI that it would be better with more stripes.
@joekstra
Deflection isn’t a flaw, it’s feature! A page or so of on topic mockery or such, and then we go off into general talk. It’s nice

A few select quotes
Thanks, Paradoxical – I’ve been curious to hear your professional opinion on the logo. Everything about it reinforces the carelessness and incompetence of Trump’s campaign. He just doesn’t give a shit about the optics of his actions, or the quality of things associated with his name. I wouldn’t be surprised if no competent graphic designer was willing to work with him, given his history of stiffing contractors, so he ended up with…well, a very “graphic” designer.
I’ve seen analysis that suggests the entwined initials are meant to be a monogram evoking wealth and luxury. Not sure why they picked such a dull, blocky sans serif – I guess they decided the monogram shouldn’t be TOO fancy, which would alienate Trump’s base. But then I don’t understand why they made the “T” discontinuous, which is unusual for a monogram and makes it look like the “T” is going through the hole of the “P” instead of passing down in front of it.
Regardless, they should have vetted the logo with at least one snarky, dirty-minded person before it went out.
I don’t think this will damage what he’s trying to convey. It’s mostly younger, liberal people who’ve drawn the buttsex parallels with the logo, so I think that there would be enough dissonance within the right to overlook it.
Besides, anything can be dirty if you think hard enough.
I was actually referring to the homophobic nature of implying as a “joke” that two homophobes are having buttsex.
Like I said, it smacks of the “homophobe is secretly in the closet” trope that I despise because it turns homophobia into something LGBT people do to themselves, so straight people are off the hook for blame.
And also like I said, there’s plenty of mockable material there to stave us off of making homophobic jokes, because they’re jokes at the expense of the LGBT community, and that’s a very liberal demographic.
I don’t like the idea of self-identified liberal people making jokes out of gay men. Just because they’re aligned with liberals doesn’t give the liberals in question a free pass to turn homosexuality into the butt of their Trump jokes, just because they know that most of us within the community won’t vote for Trump, especially now that he’s got Pence as his Veep nomination, who is a HUGE homophobe. He’s the guy who signed the bill in Indiana that allowed businesses to discriminate against LGBT people on ‘religious’ grounds.
That is a good point, but as I said earlier: It’s not his base that’s making those references, it’s still the liberals who are memeing the fuck out of it.
My money’s on an intern who may have not actually been a designer. Donald’s hella cheap if his many companies are anything to go by, so no doubt he didn’t actually want to pull the funds to hire a legit designer.
I’ve actually never heard that, but I can see why people would think so. I mean, look at the logo for Rolls-Royce:
http://www.car-brand-names.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Rolls-Royce-Logo.png
Rolls-Royce is a brand synonymous with luxury and sophistication.
I actually watched an episode of How It’s Made: Dream Cars where they made a Spectre yesterday, and all the stuff they do to make that car is really high-end. Wood paneling, hand polishing, A-Grade bull leather for the seats, and so on.
A blocky sans-serif would be a more modern look, and it’s a style that’s very commonly used for political campaign logos, right after thin, “serious looking” serif fonts.
I imagine that a blocky font and a good amount of letter separation would help improve legibility for signs from a distance.
Please. We all know the only person whose opinion Donald Trump cares about is his own. 😛
Once upon a time, or so the story goes, a reporter asked Gandhi what he thought of Western civilization.
“I think it would be a good idea,” Gandhi is said to have replied.
For some reason reading that I kept thinking of Genghis Khan instead of Gandhi and I was all, “Eh, huh?”
@Paradoxical:
True. Trump needs to start reaching out to moderates in the general campaign, though, if he wants any prayer of being elected. He’s got his loyal base locked in, the 25-30% who will vote for him no matter what. They’re not the ones he needs to convince.
The fact that his campaign pulled the problematic part of the logo after 24 hours of mockery (and reportedly tried to walk back the Veep choice) doesn’t make him look very presidential to the average voter. I don’t know how plugged in to social media snark moderates are (probably not very) but the logo reactions were everywhere, from CNN to USA Today.
I wouldn’t be surprised if his rabid alt-right fanboys were very aware of the symbolism in the logo (not the homosexual subtext, but the “Trump is a manly alpha who penetrates things/Look! White Man on Top” subtext), and approved of it wholeheartedly. Seems like something an immature misogynist would give a hearty thumbs up to. It’s about as subtle as the MGTOW logo.
@Buttercup: The street sign one? That’s the only one I can think of.
I know that AVfM’s logo is so gaudy and “edgy” that only Enoby Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way would like it.
@axecalibur: ye gawds, I hadn’t even realized I was going back and forth between joekster and joekstra. Thanks for pointing that out. I think I like joekster more, and I’ll try to stick with that one. I’ve used joekstra in the past as well, and I sometimes go back to it. They’re both contractions of my first and last name. the caps is dependent on if I’m posting with a machine that autocapitalizes words.
No wonder people get confused by what I posted and what I didn’t…
By the way, how do I get a cool pic next to my name? I’d love to put a beardie pic next to my name. Or a Parasect. That would be cool too.
@Paradoxical – yep, that’s the one! The tumescent dead end. (I know road intersection signs are usually truncated, but visually it’s just funny to me that the road they’re detouring onto ends abruptly about 10 feet later. No wonder they can’t go their own way)
Which AVfM logo are you thinking of – the black and red saggy diaper one, or the meme logo that looks like something a serial killer would draw in blood on the mirror? They’re both pretty awful.
@PI: My guess was that it was done by some intern, because the Trump campaign seem to have an aversion to people who actually know something, but I was interested in seeing if you would agree with my hunch. I know just about nothing about graphic design, so my own opinion would be essentially worthless. (I believe the logo was done by the RNC, not the Trump campaign, but no big difference.) I had heard the suggestion that they had inadvertently hired a gay graphic designer who decided to punk them — the story was too good to be true, of course, but the logo was so awful (speaking of message, not design) that that story was not totally implausible.
We all see things through the lens of our experiences. In my case, the lens is having been a young draft resister in Federal Prison, where the capacity for violence (including sexual violence) is considered one of the defining traits of manhood. There were no women, of course, so I was considered one of the more acceptable substitutes by older men who would be hitting on women on the outside, so I was constantly having to deal with being hit on. (I never got raped, not even a close call, though there were plenty of threats.) In this situation, sexual activity is about domination, not about sex. So if I had enough brain bleach available to want to think about Trump fucking Pence, I wouldn’t be thinking of two gay men having sex, I would be thinking in terms of Trump making it clear to Pence that “around here I am the fucker and you are the fucked.”
@Buttercup: I think you always have to consider the possibility that Trump’s campaign is not about winning the White House but is mainly intended to solidify his command of his marks for whatever con he goes with next. You always have to consider the possibility that he’s strapped for cash and needs to make a score. I really can’t see what Pence gets him except for perhaps getting a slightly better turnout among anti-gay and anti-choice voters. The colorless, unpopular governor of a state that Trump will win without trying, whose views on immigration and trade will not impress Trump’s base, but who will confirm Trump’s misogyny and alienate gays and families of gays who might be tempted to regard Trump as not all that homophobic? I just can’t see the logic.
@Grumpy
Yes, it could have been worse, but you were in a horrible situation in prison.
I’m so sorry.
I hope that you’ve been able to make your peace with an awful experience.
All best wishes.
A few days ago I had coffee with an older American couple who moved to Sweden more than 40 years ago. The husband told a pretty amazing story about being a conscientious objector during the Vietnam war. It was quite interesting.
I use gravatar personally.
Gravatar works with a lot of other sites as well, so think carefully on what icon you want though. : P
Can’t say I’ve had a bad experience, but it was interesting logging in for the first time here and finding an old avatar.
Most of the work for these things usually gets shunted to the volunteer interns as far as I’m aware.
And, like I said, The Donald’s a cheap fucker. If he could get someone to work for free, he totally fucking would. He’s capitalism incarnate, and it’s disgusting.
That honestly only makes it a hundred times worse. Especially since Trump’s facing rape accusations.
And I’m sorry you had to go through with that awful prison sentence.
At the risk of sounding odd, stories like yours are the reason I’m so anti-war. The last US draft was before my time, but hearing the stories of men being forced to either go fight and most likely die (or come back with a medley of mental traumas and/or mangled body parts), or sent to prison as “traitors” is highly disturbing, and it’s something I could never support putting a human being through.
