So my last post, highlighting some of the more obnoxious responses from Anime Nazis and other terrible people to the Brexit vote somehow managed to draw some even more obnoxious responses from other Anime Nazis and terrible people.
You can see some of them in the responses to this tweet of mine.
Naturally, the comments some of these lovely people tried toĀ post here on WHTM were if anything even worse. Let’s take a look at some of them, shall we? We’ll start with some of the milder ones.
NOTE TO WOULD BE COMMENTERS: If you call yourself “GASTHECUCKS” and post in ALL CAPS, I probably won’t be letting your comments through.
This fellow either knows something about my sex life that even I don’t know about, or doesn’t understand what the word “literally” means.
But these comments were pretty tame compared to this weirdly sexualized example of supervillain monologuing from “Sure Whatever.”
Apparently this guyĀ is not a big fan of Starbucks, huh?
@Holytape
You really make my day bright š
Slightly OT, but does anyone have any recommendations for books on post-WWII U.K. political history? This whole Brexit thing really has me interested.
@David: So “cock” and “cum” get censored, but not “nigga”?
@Viscaria: LOL!
@[email protected]: Of course the right is still insecure. It’s the only way they know how to live.
@ peep
Not sure how familiar you are with UK political history generally but this essay is a pretty good primer. I think it’s pretty neutral, although I may be biased as it supports my view that uk politics homogenised t the extent that the two main parties are indistinguishable.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/modern/thatcherism_01.shtml
This takes you up to the end of the Blair years.
To understand the referendum debacle I suggest you start with reading up on the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty. That’s where the Tory faultlines over Europe really came to a head. They bubbled away for years until the rise of UKIP. First seen as a bit of a joke it started to eat away at the Tory vote (and temped some Tory MPs) causing Cameron to try to shoot their fox by promising a referendum.
Cameron gambled that, despite general grumblings about the EU, there was no actual appetite for leaving. And here we are.
personalpest, I censored the first two because they were part of explicit sexual descriptions. I censor the conventionally spelled n-word. “Nigga” is generally considered a less offensive variant of that. If people think I should censor it I will.
These morons do realize that taunting and gloating are standard bad guy things, right?
@OoglyBoggles
It’s been a while since I’ve seen the show, but I found it funny that, of the characters they could have used, they used the actual mixed-race girl.
Karalora, take a look at my twitter mentions! They are out in force. I’ve lost track of how many different people (or at least different twitter accounts) have called me a cuck. Apparently they don’t realize that as an insult it’s completely meaningless to everyone but them.
Creeeeeepy. Was I the only person reminded of this?
“There will be no loyalty, except loyalty towards the Party. There will be no love, except the love of Big Brother. There will be no laughter, except the laugh of triumph over a defeated enemy.”
Dear hateful alt-right jerkwads: 1984 wasn’t a how-to manual.
@KindaSortaHarmless
The only moral mixing of races is my mixing of races.
I looked at that anime, or the art for it at least, and didn’t get “multicultural” out of it so much as “two cultures with relatively friendly ties and an equal footing interacting with each other.” If there were people of different skin colour involved, or even just people who are typically on the receiving end of racism, I’d agree. Frankly, I just want to see an anime where a black character isn’t a) a ridiculous stereotype and b) isn’t a throwaway or side character. I haven’t seen a whole lot of anime, true, but I haven’t been very encouraged by what I have seen!
(Not at all meaning to say anime is bad or that people who like it are bad, mind you. I just don’t see the friendly mixing of Japanese and English people are being very multicultural. Melting-pot, maybe? I’m likely just being overly picky!)
Oh, yes, and as to the original post: gross.
John Woo actions stuff like Ghost in the Shell, Black Lagoon and Jormungandr fit the bill. Though if we were to get more cultural, asian countries are stat wise a whole lot less diverse than other nations. This is true not only in japan, but also china, korea and vietnam.
They don’t really have multiculturalism in the underground medium of anime because in real life, that hardly exists there too unlike alot of other 1st world countries.
I haven’t seen that much anime either, but I did manage to think of one that you might like: Michiko & Hatchin.
It’s also directed by a woman, Sayo Yamamoto. Michiko & Hatchin is the first anime she’s directed.
Michiko (A woman of color) is a badass criminal, whose daughter Hana was put into an orphanage when she was sent to prison. Hana was later adopted by an abusive foster family, where she was bullied by her foster siblings and harassed and abused by her foster parents.
Hana eventually gets tired of it, and actually gets into a fist fight with the older foster sister after being pushed too far, and, of course, the foster parents blame it on her mother’s influence, even though Hana’s never even met her mother.
Michiko eventually comes and takes Hana, who she nicknames Hatchin, away from the foster parents after she escapes from prison, and the show follows their adventures afterwards.
The show’s 22 episodes long, the last one having aired last year, and I don’t know if more is in development, but I think it’s pretty good from what I’ve seen of it.
Thick Rimmed Problem Glasses…..A THING OF BEAUTY.
Another name change? Nah, I’ll wait a bit. Still, it’s going down in the archives.
Greetings . 0-0
Hello, Lone Galtian Bootstrapper! Help yourself to a welcome package, and please be sure to take a glance at the comments policy as well, just for reference!
Slightly on topic: Scottish Twitter is dragging the FUCK out of Drumpf after he tweeted that they were going to “take back their country”, even though Scotland voted to STAY.
As I saw someone say on twitter yesterday, “They made Britain Great Again.”
thank you for the suggestions, @PI and @Oogly!
Sorry, Lone Galtian Bootstrapper. I did greet you in the other thread but it was just before the troll explosion happened and it would probably be hard to find among the rubble and bits of burst troll.
There is a left wing argument for leaving the EU. Tony Benn, one of our most respected socialist politicians of the recent past said this: “My view of the EU has always been not that I am hostile to foreigners but I am in favour of democracy. I think they are building an empire and want us to be part of that empire, and I don’t want that.”
Yes, this decision has been made largely on the single issue of ‘foreigners’, and I have a feeling that there will be little change in that way. I don’t think that leave supporters will feel that they have got what they wanted.
Btw London was generally opposed to leaving, and my borough – Hackney, was the 3rd highest who did not want to leave.
The swing to the right in terms of (probably) getting Boris Johnson as PM is the worst of this so far imo.
@Ellesar
Not trya start some shit, but…
When your quote begins ‘I don’t hate foreigners, but…’ and contains ‘cos democracy’, that shit’s suspect
And just in general, I hate the idea that it’s OK so long as we can find a “left wing argument” for it. Stalin (pseudo Godwin, I’m sorry) had plenty of “left wing arguments”. In relation to Brexit, I’ve heard more “left wing arguments” than “good arguments”, and that’s upsetting
It’s as if reality were determined by one’s position on the political spectrum. I make fun of people like that on ‘the right’ (they like everything about Obamacare, just don’t call it Obamacare). On ‘my side’ it’s just sad
“Left wing arguments” fall flat because, you know, left wing people can still be racist, sexist asshats. There’s no political party in which being not racist is a platform…that I know of.
I saw people mentioning Japan and race. Well, as it happens, I had a Japanese transfer student as a classmate once (my school had a good number of transfer students). She was talking about race in front of the class and said that she thought that black people were only in Africa until moving to the U.S. Not necessarily malice, but ignorance. That would be Hanlon’s Razor, right?
Also, as for anime, I haven’t seen a ton but Cowboy Bebop in my opinion lives up to its reputation. I haven’t seen the full series (but I plan on getting the Blu-Ray so I can watch it in high quality without ads) but I do have the movie on Blu-Ray. It’s a good action movie and the cinematrography is smart.
The show isn’t the most diverse but it has a dark-skinned little girl named Ed as the group’s computer hacker, and she’s just great. There’s an entire episode where Coffy and Shaft (yes, from the blaxplotation movies) hunt one another down, and there are other dark-skinned characters in the series, including pedestrians. Having pedestrians of different races is actually fairly important IMO as it makes it seem more real (at least where I live) and also more humanizing. Fanservice, one of the other problematic things in anime, is done pretty okay. The fanservice is less blatant than a lot of modern examples and still does cool shit. Basically ,go watch this show now,
I meant to say the fanservice CHARACTER still does cool shit.
It’s becoming really hard these days being an otaku.
@ellesar
I understand your point entirely. I did not vote yesterday. I did some hard soul searching before coming to that decision. I was actually in favour of ‘leave’ for the same reasons as the late Mr Benn. Some of my friends were in favour of ‘leave’ also, but also decided not to vote. After the death of Jo Cox, it was disgusting to see the Nazis out in force doing nothing to disguise their extremely hateful and racist views. I think that convinced a lot of ‘leavers’ to switch to ‘remain’. The British press, especially the scum papers like the Scar and the Daily Maul have confused so many issues regarding immigration, migrant workers and refugees into a ‘brown people’ xenophobia which has inflamed the self entitled Nationalists to come out as out and proud Fascists. Any sensible person would realise that asylum seekers and migrant workers are very different things. There is a huge rise in Fascism right across Europe, and as much as I hope that Brexiters voted leave for the right reasons, there is a vocal minority who are shouting very loud that it is a victory for Fascism. I am glad that I didn’t vote, but am pretty non plussed about the outcome as they will find any way they can to wriggle out of any promises they have made. Like spending money on the (privatised) NHS etc instead of paying membership subs to club Europe, and preventing the wasteful destruction of British produce so we fulfil EU import quotas. and I realised that if this was a decision that could truly harm the powers that be, they would not have allowed the public to make that decision. It was just a case of setting up BloJo and Cameron as sock puppets to oppose one another, as a sideshow to divide public opinion – divide and conquor!! And that is exactly what it has done, otherwise we would not be on here talking about it.
@Kylo Ronin
What do ever mean? The anime nazis, the british anime nazis or the trump anime kkk edl nazis?
After all we’re flooded by the same mediocrity, 2D women being sold in generic cardboard cutouts of stereotypes in softcore porn being the standard, incest is the norm, harem battles and self insert power fantasies, and so on.
At least for me I’m having a blast with RE:ZERO, the protag who’s basically Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow with an author that utterly despises self insert fantasies. That and the ever so fabulous JOJO Bizarre Adventure. We’re also getting a TV series of Little Witch Academia, which is pretty much Gibli style Harry Potter. This is the movies where you can show your kids and not feel ashamed of how neck deep the shallow soft core porn is intertwined with the anime biz.
Not anime related but the new Voltron series has several strong female protagonists who use their wits and cunning to defeat their opponents, or just brute force, and typically don’t need to be saved. Oh and the team uniform doesn’t have token skirt for girl. And they don’t treat the girl member any differently.
