Memeday: This imaginary feminist I just made up is a hypocrite! Part 1

Apparently, if someone pays for you on a date you should lose the right to vote
Apparently, if someone pays for you on a date you should lose the right to vote

Today, a look at the very terrible “Feminist Nazi” meme, in which this shouty lady has been made into the mouthpiece of feminism at its most hypocriticalist.

I know, that “ist” at the end of “hypocritical” really shouldn’t be there, but somehow “most hypocritical” didn’t seem strong enough.

The doofuses spreading these memes around the internet — the ones featured in this post have been shared anywhere from a couple of hundred to more than 166,000 times — apparently seem to think that Ms. Feminist Nazi offers quite the indictment of feminism.

But there are a couple of teensy problems with that idea. First, a lot of the alleged hypocrisies aren’t actually hypocrisies; many of them are just sort of puzzling. Second, NO FEMINIST HAS EVER SAID ANYTHING LIKE THE STUFF IN THESE MEMES.

Let’s begin with this evil feminist who, like the identical looking evil feminist in the meme above, demands that men pay for everything. This is apparently rule #1 of Feminist Club.

QUEEN

Apparently Rule #2 of Feminist Club has to do with pulling chairs out and holding doors open:

holddoor

Weird! I thought Feminist Nazis went around yelling a dudes who held doors open for them.

Feminist Nazi also oppresses men with her dating choices.

realmen

And her choice of dance partners:

danceclub

I’m glad the meme-maker specified this was at a dance club, because otherwise I would have assumed it was, I dunno, at a gas station?

You know how MRAs always insist that the wage gap is a “myth?” Well, not so much, if the existence of the wage gap comes in handy for making a meme attacking women.

screwsover

But apparently these same dude who think women screw their employers over by getting pregnant also sort of think that they shouldn’t be able to get abortions.

That’s about the only thing I was able to get out of this baffling meme:

abortion

Is there a single women on earth today, or in all of human history, who honesty believes that they are entitled to never face any kind of hardship?

hardship

And now it’s time for a message from Upside-Down Backwards Land:

sofat

As a formerly skinny kid who only got fat as an adult, I will only note that I pretty much never got any shit from anyone about my weight … until I started making fun of MRAs online.

Ok, now these things are just getting weird:

bentley

And I will end with a meme about which I can only say that HOLY CRAP IS IT AWFUL.

And of course it’s about rape.

raped

To paraphrase a famous quote: Memes about feminism prove the necessity of feminism.

And we’re not even done with this meme yet.

COMING IN PART 2: Even more confusing Feminist Nazi memes, plus some written by actual feminists.

PSS: He chairs the White House Council on Boys and Men??? Do the people at the White House know how to do an Interwebz search? WTF.

Probably they do, which is why the White House Council on Boys and Men is not actually a White House council.

There is a White House Council on Women and Girls. It has a whitehouse.gov url, as you can see here:

https://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/eop/cwg

There is no similar whitehouse.gov url for the White House Council on Boys and Men. Their website is a .org. That’s because there is no such thing in the actual White House.

Farrell et. al. saw the council on women and girls and said, of course, What About Teh Menz???? and proposed a similar council for boys and men. The Obama administration told them to put together a formal proposal, and they did … something, from what I’ve read it was totally amateur hour there. The proposal was rejected. Probably someone at the White House did a google search as you suggested.

So the “White House” portion of the name is but a trick, like when AVFM called itself the White Ribbon Campaign without actually being the White Ribbon Campaign.

The meme captions here are incredible!

Love those pink paw pads. So many really sweet kitties and puppies!

Here’s my attempt at our two

I call them “our family’s” pets, but in reality the dog is utterly devoted only to my son (which is why I got her in the first place!). The cat likes the humans of the house but is NOT enamored of the canine member of the family.

As a guy with very little money, I’m more than happy when my feminist friends/dates pay for my drinks. And I probably am a misandrist too.
Think I should send these fine folks my picture so they can make weird memes about me and I can finally achieve worldwide recognition and become rich, beautiful and famous ?

@dreemr A friend of mine would say that’s your dog’s author photo. I have a great pic of my former cat in the sink, looking very suave with his little elbow propped on the edge; this friend used to say when he started publishing his books he’d get an author photo of himself in the sink. Hm, he’s had a few published since then, I’d better remind him of that….

For those who don’t know, it seems the twitter account of Andrea Hardie (Judgy Bitch) has been suspended (again).

Don’t know how she crossed the line this time, don’t much care. Hopefully twitter will KEEP her and her toxic misogyny suspended, this time.

Biff is indeed Overlord of the flat, elder statescat of the six cats in my immediate family. I am but his humble minion, provider of treats, head skritches and the opening of doors.

Carisma is gorgeous! I’ve never seen markings on a coat like that before.

I’ve been searching the adoptable sections online for all my local animal control-and-care shelters (they’re the kind with a high euthanasia rate for the animals who come through their doors and aren’t either ‘pulled’ by rescue groups or someone adopts them within the narrow time frame) for my next ‘the one’ kitty. It’s been almost 2 years since my last kitty passed away at home, took a while to feel like I am ready for this, and there are so many kitties in need.

I had been interested in a kitty a few months back, but a rescue group came in and pulled him literally the day I was going in to see him in person because his ‘intake hold’ was done – rescues get to go in before the shelter opens to the public each day – and while I can afford the vet/food/toys/etc that come with bringing a new fuzz-face into the house, the rescues in my area tack on a $300-$450 adoption fee I can’t manage to fit into the budget. The breed specific ones often charge an adoption fee that’s even higher. I get it – running a non-profit animal rescue is a labor of love that’s very expensive even when there are donations of food and supplies. I find myself wondering if some of these groups are filling the space once occupied by pet stores and hobby-level breeders while claiming to be altruistic rescuers. Obviously there aren’t an adequate number of foster homes for the animals pulled from shelters and brought in by the area’s residents here in SoCal – despite the large scale adoption events and the regular weekend animal adoption fairs that places like Petco and Petsmart provide a location for and are affiliated with various animal rescues. Then I listen to people talking about the applications rescues have them fill out (they run credit reports even!) and the reasons they are barred from adopting – a fence being easy to escape, for a cat that would never be allowed outside unless in a carrier, is just one example – makes it seem like these rescues aren’t actually trying to find a good home, they want a perfect home where the lofty standards they expect are fully attained. Perfect doesn’t exist where people are involved.

So, bring on more pictures of cats and dogs, and cross fingers/toes/legs/arms/eyes/etc for me to find a ‘the one’ fuzzy. 🙂

I have to admit, I’ve had four cats in my life and none were rescue. The first one was from a family friend whose cat had a litter, she lived to be nineteen. While we had her, a pregnant stray turned up on our doorstep and had kittens in our shed so we kept one, who lived to be fourteen. Biff was the first cat who I have had sole responsibility for and I got him via an ad placed in a newsagents window. He’s eleven now and still in rude health. I’m sorry you’re having such a time of it adopting a new furry friend msexceptiontotherule I hope you can sort something out soon.

All of our cats have been “followed me home” accidental pets, or given to us by friends or relatives needing to downsize. The little monster in my icon was discovered in the garbage by a friend of my mother’s. The friend already had too many animals and need to give her away, so we took her. She was so skinny, and so weak she didn’t want to move. 🙁 The first night we had her, she woke me up in the middle of the night because the litter box was across the room and she was apparently afraid to go over there by herself in the dark. 😀

She’s very pushy when she wants attention, and when she doesn’t she will literally put her paws on you and shove you away. She sets her boundaries as firmly as she’s able.

It’s really difficult to get a good pic of her when she’s awake, because she is usually super-interested in finding out what I’m doing, so almost all of the non-blurry pics I have are of her sleeping.

http://i.imgur.com/xTekJIN.jpg

Here’s one of her awake and as you can see it is a little blurry. She’s not pleased with me because I woke her up messing with the camera. About ten seconds later she came over to see what was going on.

btw LOVE the idea that women owe it to their usually shitty jobs to not get pregnant (dont have sex! & TW (Hope you dont get assaulted either. (Dont get an abortion! Dont expect us to pay for BC!)) bc Capitalist Overlords are so much more important than us mere prole cogs and our families.

Lovely pictures, thank you.

All the degrees of Squeee! I’ve been while scrolling through are too many to mention. But just a few:

@ WWTH: Mr Bluecat and I have a sad now, because your dog has a strokeable nose, yet we cannot stroke him. Why do you mock us, why?

@ Genjones: smooth dog suffering with dignity while hairy dog just enjoys it.

@ IP: Mr B said “That’s a cat-shaped hole in space. With a tongue.”

Actually, these boil down to the wisdom encapsulated in that old MRA conundrum: If a woman is alone in the forest, and there’s nobody to hear her, is she still wrong?

Apparently, yes.

LOL, yes the smooth dog (Zoidberg the Carnivorous Baby Deer Fawn) is full of poise and grace. The fuzzy one, not so much. I found Zoidberg wandering in the road when I was delivering pizza, and as soon as I opened my door he showed me his belly then hopped into the car and curled up on his own, and I had to work the rest of the night with a dog in my car. I never found his former owner. He’s a well behaved angel, very prancy and does little twirly leaps of happiness all the time.

The fuzzy one was a street dog who followed us home from a walk. He was apparently only a year old, but he seemed a lot older because he’s not very flexible and his eyes were cataracted from malnutrition. He was unused to being kept indoors, and we named him Warren Zevon because he howled so much. He’s totally derpy, has no idea how to play and likes to whine and try to gnaw on your nose a lot. We call him the Cuckoo Dog because he’s always trying to displace Zoidberg and steal all the parent’s attention for himself. Just now he went alert and is staring me down from across the room because Zoidberg just got in my lap. Any second now he’ll come over to try and roust him.

Aww – the dogs seem to have lucked out with you GenJones. I’m always amused by dogs’ expressions of joy – that photo of someone rubbing Warren Zevon’s tummy is brilliant.

OT, but you might enjoy this – for drawings of dog joy, and of dog dignified protest, as well as the sentiment.

More dogs and cats this morning!! YES. Biff looks like a kitteh you do not want to mess with. Love black n white ones 🙂
Skiriki, is Carisma a Bengal or similar?
I would like to meet and squish all of them, please. If that’s no trouble.

Our current three fluffballs are heaps of fun, and very healing. We had a different 3 for 17 years, and lost all of them last year within a couple of months. The house had all these cat-shaped absences everywhere – in the kitchen, on our beds, our laps, well, you know what I mean, I’m sure.

Anyways, if you haven’t come across First Dog on the Moon cartoons before, you might like them. FD is our ‘National Treasure’, and much like the Mammoth, combines wonderful politics with love for animals. I thought this one was especially apt:

katz

msexceptiontotherule: I work with a cat rescue and maybe I can clear some things up. Euthanasia rates for cats are still massively high — 21,000 out of 29,000 cats were euthanized at Los Angeles’ animal care center in 2014 — and to reduce those numbers it’s vital for rescues to get cats out of high-kill shelters.

Rescues usually run on shoestring budgets and are operated entirely by volunteers, who put in long hours and at most rescues pay for their fosters’ food and litter expenses themselves. Newborn kittens require round-the-clock care, just like newborn babies, and a litter of weaned kittens can go through a flat of high-quality cat food in less than a week. Burnout rates are high as people try to balance their limits with the knowledge that every cat they don’t take in will probably be euthanized.

Adoption fees in my area are usually $100-$150, but they don’t come near to covering expenses, especially since rescues often take in cats with expensive medical conditions who may never be adoptable, like my baby Christmas, who has mobility problems and an enlarged heart.

comment image

As for the applications, of course we know that no adopter is perfect! But at the same time, there are still many people who do things like declaw their cats or irresponsibly give pets as Christmas presents without thinking about the long-term consequences. My rescue once adopted a kitten to a seemingly loving family, only for them to later starve him by giving him 1 tablespoon of food a day. They got him back in time to save his life, but he suffered permanent kidney damage.

So we develop applications to address problems we’ve experienced. But it’s never our goal to disqualify people. To a large degree the application exists to make sure the adopter thinks about the full implications of owning a pet: What if they get an expensive injury, what if you start dating someone allergic to cats, etc. I’ve never had to turn down an adopter as unfit who got as far as filling out an application. (And no rescue I’ve ever worked with has required a credit check.)

As for replacing local pet stores, yes! That is part of the goal! Most pet stores that sell puppies and kittens get them from abusive animal mills, and all pet stores and breeders add to the already out-of-control pet overpopulation that leads to all the euthanasia. Even today, some 3/4 of adopters get their pets from pet stores instead of shelters or rescues.

The good news is that rescues do a lot to reduce the overcrowding in city shelters. NKLA, with its coalition of over 100 rescues, has decreased euthanasia in LA by 66%. But high-kill shelters are still full of cats, and I’m sure they are in your area, too, and that you will find many other cats there who still need good homes.
