This is a bit off-topic, but I’m thinking this blog could use more off-topic stuff these days.
Here are two (short) videos I rounded up from YouTube. I want you to tell me which is the least convincing.
First, a possibly just a teensy bit questionable “alien” encounter that the video poster swears is “REAL!” Supposedly captured by a CCTV camera. Why a CCTV camera would be pointed at a storm pipe in a field I have no idea.

Next, proof that gravity is fake, as revealed by a secret Illuminati clue hidden in plain sight on Third Rock from the Sun.
And, yes, the guy posting it is utterly sincere. He’s a flat earther, literally, and for some reason flat earthers think gravity is a LIE!
Read the comments for the video on YouTube and despair for the future of mankind. I mean, that’s true for pretty much all YouTube comments, but trust me, these are even more despair-inducing than usual.
Now it’s up to you to pick The Least Convincing YouTube Video of the Week!

I went to the YouTube page for the Flat Earth video to check the comments. I stopped reading the comments after a slight case of cranial bleeding and looked over at the sidebar. Sooooooo many Flat Earth videos! What is wrong with our species?
*watches alien video*
Groot? Is that you?
A good pause between litteral horrors.
I still shiver from the other post.
So… are all aliens made of very clearly plastic, man-made objects, or just the ones that live in storm pipes?
Gravity = Lie
God =/= Gravity
Therefore God is not cake.
Still undecided about the thing in the drain pipe. As it doesn’t appear to be made of cake, we can’t rule out the possibility that it is God.
(longtime lurker, feeling just good about myself at the moment to decloak for a minute)
“The people on this planet will swallow anything!”
Accurate. But not in the way that the dude who made that second video thinks…
And no, replaying a line from a goofy sitcom in ever slower motion will not make it more real.
I did like the scary-dramatic music from the first one, though…even if I did wonder why someone was hiding in the pipe, poking a fencepost out and pretending it was an alien.
I’ve been binging on In Search Of… videos lately, and I’m of the opinion that what both of these YouTube videos need is Leonard Nimoy’s deep, warm voice. Only it can transform runaway idiocy into something that sounds almost plausible.
Tabby. there are so so manyflat earth videos. It’s bizarre.
Victorious Parasol, the flat earthers hate Neil deGrasse Tyson so much. They make memes attacking/mocking him. I might have to do a post on that at some point, as they use some of the same techniques (if they can be called that) as do MRA mememakers.
Sir Bodsworth: I believe that Morgan Freeman can also instill the same effect.
Reminds me of an old youtube video of a woman spraying a hose, and showing the resulting rainbow for about 30 seconds, then wondering aloud: “What the HELL the government is putting in our water supply to cause it to make colours like this? This is completely unnatural!”
@Freemage: I would watch the hell out of a new version of In Search Of narrated by Morgan Freeman. They won’t get around to making it, though. The great thing about In Search Of… was that they moved from topic to topic on a weekly basis, whereas its modern equivalents just pick a single topic — ‘ghosts’, or ‘bigfoot’ or ‘ancient aliens’ — and run with it for years on end.

That’s not an alien. That is clearly a very terrified stickman.
Neither are convincing, but I find the notion of alien visitors more believable than a flat earth. Odds are good that there is other intelligent life in the universe, I just have trouble buying the notion that intelligent life would be interested in us.
Out of curiosity, where do Flat Earther’s place the worlds Eastern and Western edges?
Is there some flat-earth equivalent to the AVFM logo that is added to every meme at the largest font that will fit into the negative space?
joekster, there are no eastern or western (or northern) edges, according to them. the earth is a disk with the north pole in the center; Antarctica isn’t a continent but rather a strip of land with a vast ice wall surrounding the world.
POM, there is one guy who’s got a logo, but he’s better about working it into the memes than the MRAs are.
Ah. Thank you for sharing that. So, the only places that in their view would require one to travel off the edge would be going over Antartica, which is nearly impossible anyhow.
Still, wonder why it only take 18 hours to fly from LA to Wellington, New Zealand, but 12 hours to go from New York to Cairo, which is less than half the distance, by their map 🙂
CCTV never looked so darn good.
Also there is far better proof of aliens in the “Star” “Wars”. They’re all over the place!
@ David
So … people who think the Discworld is nonfiction.
@Victorious Parasol – and this is the BEST thing about flat-earthers: they provide the perfect excuse to talk about Discworld 🙂
Aaaah, Discworld.
@ Mish
I just finished re-reading Hogfather, and am starting a re-read of Maskerade. How about you?
