I ran across this #TotallyYourShield meme featuring Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson on Twitter today.
Did Pierson choose to be used in this meme? No. Did Trump hire her so he could use her as a “shield?” Doubtful. He likely chose Pierson — a Muslim-hating provocateur who once wore a necklace made of bullets for a TV appearance — because she’s as obnoxiously untethered as he is.
But the Trump fan who posted this meme is happy enough to use her, utterly unapologetically, as a shield.
Funny how that works.

#notyourshield is still the most confusing hashtag to me. I mean, I understand what they think it means but it really makes no sense at all. It’s basically the “I have black friends, so I can’t be racist.” of hashtags.

Such a feature does have a use, but I agree it’s not a substitute for actual moderation (ie, disabling abusive accounts). It would be more applicable for cases of haranguing, where the user just doesn’t want to deal with some conspiracy theorist, for instance. An “I can’t see you” option, in that case, leaves the ranter shouting at a blank wall.

Ocasional reader, I’ve been seeing a lot of people happy they can block people who stalk their post to argue with them. Sadly it seems you can only block people who have replied to you.

I’ve never seen anybody use the hashtag other than #GooberGloopers pretending to be women and other marginalized groups. Could it be they are using them as a shield? Gee, who would have thought.
