Milo’s fans descend on my Twitter mentions with their #NotYourShields on full power

Milo Yiannopoulos having a vidion of Donald Trump descend from heaven
Milo Yiannopoulos having a vision of Donald Trump

So yesterday, I wrote a post about Trump supporters who are talking about bringing guns to rallies and polling places — and some who are even talking about starting up what would amount to an unofficial Trump militia.

I illustrated the post with a striking photo (see it here) of right-wing “journalist” Milo Yiannopoulos and a friend brandishing guns while holding a Trump banner. Given Milo’s unctuous and theatrical support of Trump — he calls the Orange One “daddy,” as in “Daddy is going to win and then he’s going to make America great again and there’s nothing any of you can do about it” — I thought the pic was apropos. But aside from the caption to the picture, there were zero other mentions of Milo in my post.

It didn’t take long for Milo — apparently quite attentive to all news involving him — to learn about my post, and after he mentioned it in a tweet, Milo’s unofficial Twitter militia descended upon my Twitter mentions.  (I also got a request to take the photo down from the apparent copyright holder, DJ Pop A Titty Out; I removed the picture, and popped a titty out for good measure.)

Here is some of what Milo’s fans had to say.

You may find yourself wondering — as I did, for a moment — what on earth Milo’s sexual orientation (or the color of his boyfriend’s skin) has to do with my post. The answer, of course, is nothing. The picture I (briefly) used to illustrate my post depicted Milo simultaneously holding a gun and a Trump banner, not marching in a pride parade or having sex with a man or any other stereotypically gay activities.

But Milo’s fans, or at least a chunk of them, apparently feel that by mentioning Milo’s gayness they have, as if by some magical incantation, rendered any criticism of him moot. They evidently think that — according to the official SJW rules, spelled out in the Official SJW Handbook — any and all criticism of particular gay people, at least by SJWs, is intrinsically homophobic, and strictly forbidden.

Indeed, one of Milo’s fans went right for the H-word:

milofan

It’s no coincidence that the person making this accusation is a #GamerGater — or at least a pretty fervent defender of #GamerGate — because this is one of that, er, consumer movement’s standard rhetorical ploys. #GamerGaters often attack so-called SJWs for using women, people of color, LGBT folks and others who suffer from some degree of discrimination as “shields” for their own allegedly evil beliefs.

Obviously, this does happen sometimes. But it’s #GamerGaters, not progressives, who are the all-time champions when it comes to using this tactic, which they do so opportunistically and cynically it can take your breath away. GamerGate’s #NotYouShield hashtag may well be the most inadvertently ironic thing ever conceived by a human being.

When they’re not trotting out female #GamerGaters to “prove” that #GamerGate can’t be misogynistic — thus using these women, yes, as shields — they’re trying to convince critics of Milo that they’re evil homophobes for criticizing his noxious beliefs.

In this case, Milo’s defenders are also trying to use Milo’s gayness to “prove” that he couldn’t possibly be the “gay nazi” they accuse me of calling him.

milofanmatdeathcamp milofanmatoven

Apparently MatanJeda doesn’t know that Ernst Röhm, the literal boss of the literal Brownshirts in literal Hitler’s literal Germany — was in fact gay. Or that having interracial sex does not magically render someone not a racist. (White slaveowners used to routinely rape slave women, for gods sake; that didn’t somehow make them paragons of racial tolerance.)

And never mind that I never called Milo a “gay nazi” — though, in response to MatanJada’s pestering, I reminded him and anyone else who was listening that Milo, FWIW, used to call himself “Milo Wagner” and sometimes wore a German Iron Cross.

I’m not sure why I bothered, though. Trying to discuss anything with these people is utterly pointless, what with the endless straw-manning and their utter unwillingness to take in any new information. One of Milo’s militiamen — note to the literal-minded: I’m using this term figuratively — accused me of lying in my post yesterday. I asked him for examples of these lies. This is what ensued.

It looks like he’s whacking off.

Come to think of it, the same could be said for his widdle fan club.

Fact: it is not possible for a member of one marginalized group to be prejudiced against any other marginalized group. There are no gay anti-Semites, black homophobes, or ableist Native Americans. Having a trait that is not shared by those who dominate society means it is literally impossible for you to say a prejudiced thing.

…didn’t Gertrude Stein collaborate with the Fascists?

Oh, I guess that means Fascism had no prejudicial elements.

My mom and I love Bob’s Burgers! We’ve made an agreement that if I ever end up with a group of friends who like doing group costumes at Halloween and the group decides to do Bob’s Burgers one year, I have dibs on Louise (I already have the hat!) and she’ll be Blonde Linda. My dad hates the show (and pretty much all adult-oriented cartoons) and thinks we’re both nuts.

In the back of my mind it’s going “Daddy, totally sexual, totally the fantasy of daddy gonna make the bad people go away and make everything okay again”

Actually that’s in the very front of my mind. Eh if you’re into tiny handed orange peels be my guest.

Seriously though author these people are revisionists in practice and thought. With a dash of conspiracy theory and smugness of feeling big in a very small pond makes a very vile cesspool of pond scum.

But Paradoxy, if being gay doesn’t provide them with license to say horrible bigoted things without being called out for them, then what does provide that license? There has to be something, right?

I swear, if they discovered that the Queen of England could get away with saying gross stuff, then there would be a rash of HRM sock puppets tomorrow.

It’s ridiculous, but pretty consistent with the far right troll MO. They’re too dumb/resistant/defensive to understand the nuances of identity politics,so they think words like “Homophobic” are like magic incantations we use to claim the moral high ground. Just say the magic word in vague proximity to a gay person and BOOM, people around you feel guilty. They’re not empathetic or kind people, so they can’t understand why a person would care about something like homophobia if they weren’t trying to score points of some kind.

When someone like Milo comes along, they leap at the opportunity to use the magic word themselves. “Homophobic! He is gay therefore you are homophobic for criticizing him! Ha ha, I said the magic word this time! Now you have to feel guilty! I WIN THE GAME OF EMPATHY!!”

The author of that Alt.net article can’t tell the difference between the socially progressive libertarian ideology Sanders is writing about in that letter, which includes abolishing sodomy laws, and the ideology of the gay liberation movement.

Also, while Sanders admirably voted against DOMA, he argued gay marriage was a State’s rights issue and did jack all for gay rights. That’s fine and typical, as almost all US gay rights victories outside of local progressive enclaves were made through court decisions until very recently.

What is it about right-wing populist narcissists and fake blond floppy hair? There’s Trump and Yiannopoulos over in the US, over here we’ve got Geert Wilders.

Is it a Thatcher thing?

It’s odd, but it’s almost as if these Trumpistes’ entire view of the society they live in has been entirely gleaned from MRA memes.

Self-induced stupidity?

The manuresphereans trying to logic remind me of a kid who hasn’t quite got the idea of a joke yet. You know, the stage when they say things like, “When is a door not a door? When it’s a microwave!” or “-What’s brown and sticky? An Elephant!”

Unless of course they’re pretending not to get it in order to annoy, because their ego can’t cope with, “Oops, you’re right. My bad this time.”

Milo? Ain’t he the GG clown who’s a gay homophobe? Not enough him being a part of the GG clown car, but he’s sounds like these black Christian fundies, who piratecopy racist cliches from white supremacists to lead some kinda culture wars in the black community. And when I thought, he can’t be any more of a shithead, he comes and proves me wrong.

Funny how Milo has remained silent over the Michelle Fields debacle? Somehow I don’t think he’ll be one of the reporters who resigns in solidarity with her.

@ SFHC

It’s interesting but in English law we do have a distinction between the “(adjective) + (noun)” formula and “(noun) who happens to be (adjective)”.

There is a reason for that. It was a common defence to racially aggravated public order offences for defendants to argue “well he is black and he is a bastard, so I’m just telling the truth”; but obviously calling someone a “black bastard” does have overtones.

Under our hate speech laws there are now a number of protected characteristics. Sexuality (or perceived sexuality) is one of them. So whilst “Milo is a nazi who happens to be gay” would be permissible, calling someone a “gay nazi” could amount to an offence here.

(There was, as you might imagine, a lot of discussion about this when the laws were being proposed but you can probably see why we came down the way we did)

ETA: were of course it was the case that Milo is a Nazi (he says covering himself from any defamation liability)

Yiannopoulos was an everyday sort of Breitbart tighty-righties type, happily knocking gamers, until #gamergate came along and he saw a way to be even more of a misogynist than he already was, allegedly.

The GamerGate-supporting journalist who hates gamers

Nowadays, like his PUA mirror image, Daryush ‘Roosh’ Valizadeh, Y. seems to have a hankering for sticking his dick into the lion’s mouth by playing footsie with the v.far-right.

Seems some narcissists just want to be liked, but only by the ones most likely to swallow them whole and blow them out in bubbles.

As for, ‘gay nazis.’ There’s an unfortunate historical precedent for that.

I think GruelGloppers actually think that the dreaded SJWs are exactly what they project when they use these red herring “NertYerSheeeld” arguments. A died in the wool SJW can only stop what they’re doing, prostrate themselves and timidly meep “we’re not worthy” whenever a member of (insert minority and/or oppressed group here) is speaking even if said person is literally saying they can break the laws of logic, physics and biology and fart money-dropping rainbow moonbeams because magic and if you disagree with them for a picosecond you’re a horrible bigot.

Milo is a shit who loves Trump, no. No, no, no-he’s gay, he has a black boyfriend and he loves Tori Amos-your argument is invalid!

Talking about Valizadeh, the alt-right told him to fuck off due to him not being “white” enough (which is funny, since one of his parents is from Armenia, the actual Caucasus. Funny, huh?).
