Today is the day of the Twitter tantrum known as #TheTriggering, a contrived hashtag in which the Internet’s biggest jerks have decided to post crap that is slightly more jerky than the crap they usually post.
I’ve been poking around in the hashtag for a couple of hours and I have to say it’s pretty underwhelming. There’s a great deal of highly predictable racism, transphobia, and misogyny. There are anime-avatarred fat shamers, Anita Sarkeesian haters pitching fits, Trump fans joking about the Holocaust, and even a few Men’s Rights activists. The hashtag reeks of undeserved self-satisfaction.
The only genuinely funny or original Tweets in the hashtag come from the feminists and other so-called Social Justice Warriors who’ve crashed the party with Tweets intended to trigger the triggerers.
And yet I have somehow managed to find a few lessons in all of this. And so, without further ado, here are The Top Ten Things I’ve Learned from the Twitter Tantrum that is #TheTriggering (So Far).
1) Fat haters don’t proofread their tweets very carefully:

5) There’s a weird overlap between #TheTriggering participants and dudes who almost certainly did very poorly on the analogies questions on the SAT

6) There’s also a weird overlap between Trump supporters, castration advocates, revenge porn lovers, and haters of Marilyn Monroe. That overlap calls himself “Riv.”

10) It’s somehow unfair for the media to point out offensive tweets in a hashtag devoted to posting offensive tweets
The media will ignore the 99.99% of smart #TheTriggering tweets and write about the tiny fraction of ones that are actually racist.

I imagine I will learn more lessons from #TheTriggering before the day is done.
Re Sparta: Despite its superior treatment of women … I’m sorry, but I have to go with Athens in the awesomeness department. The way that the Athenian citizen army handed the Persians’ ass to them TWICE in one day … Sparta doesn’t come close to that. Not to mention all that proto-Nazi stuff and the rejection of culture that kind of makes me dislike Sparta.
@amused
Not to mention that Sparta needed about a thousand troops from other city states for that utterly useless last stand they took so much pride in. Hell, the naval battle going on right next to Thermoplyae was way more important.
@ josh
I find the best way to read/watch “300” (and I do enjoy it) is to remember that even within the story itself, the account of the battle is a propaganda speech.
@ monzach
Say what you like about Oedipus, at least he loved his mum.
@Amused
Oh I quite agree with you. Athens was clearly a much better place, although of course they had their own problems, too. They were the birthplace of democracy, though, and also the home city of such a huge amount of great philosophers. Still, Spartans are just so friggin’ cool! 😀
@ josh & amused
True enough, but why did they bring a bunch of actors?
@Alan
It’s hard for me personally to do that, because Frank Miller really is that racist, and really does think Sparta was a cool place that Athens and its ‘democracy’ (so utterly flawed as it was) couldn’t compare too.
I get a real kick out of people who think “trans” is a plural word. Do they think that a single transgender person is referred to as a “tran”?
Edit: got modded for including a slur in the quoted text, which is good because it reminded me to star it out.
@Alan Robertshaw
Well, some ancient cultures (especially the Egyptians) had a thing about keeping it in the family, amongst the royals especially. Still, there is such a thing as being too fond of your dear old mum. 🙁
@GravyTrain
Thankyou. =) Apologies for being a bit harsh about it, but even aside from the whole “Two wrongs don’t make a right” and “Ironic bigotry is still bigotry” things, this thread’s full of trolls just waiting to gotcha us.
@ josh
I take your point. It’s like that discussion we had a while back about enjoying work by crappy creators.
These betray a fear that makes me think they may be more suseptible to our reprogramming efforts than they would like to admit. Keep up the pressure. We will make them homosexuals who are unwillingly attracted to “fat” women yet!
But, really, by Redpill logic, a world where Feminists have convinced most men to think “fat” is beautiful would be a paradise for the rest of men who could resist the reprogramming … right? These guys are constantly complaining that the “hot” ones today are all full of themselves and have massive egos and look down their noses at regular guys etc. because of their high “SMV”. Well, in a world in which men had been reprogrammed to like “fat” women, the remaining women who are “hot” by the conventional standards of today would be less in demand, less in a position to act all stuck-up, and far more willing to settle for less than the Alphaest Alpha who ever ate Alfalfa Sprouts. Seems to me like a man who has conventional tastes and confident in his ability to resist peer pressure would welcome such a world.
I guess I’m just not smart enough to understand these geniuses.
@Alan
Something like that. I don’t begrudge anyone for enjoying 300. I just can’t, myself.
@Scented Fucking Hard Chairs
Indeed. This is literally the first time I’ve posted here anyway, only discovered this site yesterday. Any stupid/offensive comments from that Twitter are entirely down to me going on a wind-up at some Gators and absolutely don’t represent any views held by this site or its members *little reference for any would-be trolls!*.
The lack of proof reading, the bad spelling and grammar: the result of over excited #triggerati typing with one hand whilst yanking themselves off with the other?
Could be.
I LOVE the breastfeeding one. Like . . . what? Has this person ever met a baby? Is he aware that they have different food requirements than older humans? What restaurant food does he think people should give their babies?
“FEMINISM IS CANCER” reads the shirt of the unhealthiest-looking guy on Earth. #TheSniggering
hi, @sandiseattle!
bye, @sandiseattle!
@sandiseattle
While this is surely a devastating loss for the WHTM community, I think that – with time – we’ll find the strength to recover.
Much original. So edgy. So trigger.

Maghaven,
I always smell of whiff of protesting too much coming of the guys who are terrified that feminists are trying to make them get with fat women.
The reality is, we aren’t all programmed to be attracted to whatever the current standard of beauty our cultures have. Attraction is very subjective. But these guys are so steeped in toxic masculinity that they can’t ever admit to finding anyone attractive if she can’t be used as a trophy to impress other men. Sometimes I’m glad to be average looking so I don’t have to weed these men out.
Just another reason why we need more feminism. Most of us think you should be with whoever you want as long as it’s consenting. I don’t why so many people see this as a threat.
‘Hey, you know I think every 140 character slur has already been tweeted.’
‘Wait, let me run the numbers… Damn! It checks out! What now? Get lives?’
‘Not on my watch, buddy. What we need us a gimmick…’
‘We could tweet them again?’
‘No. Needs more.’
‘We tweet them all at once?’
‘Well it’s not a great idea. But it buys us another day…’
That hashtag is NOT trending, so the only way to find that stuff is to either A) follow somebody who posts this bullshit anyway, or B) deliberately look for it.
I don’t think it’s working as well as they thought it would.
@WWTH
I’m actually dating a guy right now that recently admitted that he was afraid to date me at first, even though he was attracted to me. I’m fat, and he was afraid of what his friends would think. Eventually he went for it though, and we have been dating for a year. His friends actually like me a lot and are not bro-y at all, but that just shows how deeply ingrained toxic masculinity and the pressure to have a “trophy” wife/gf is.
*He is not bro-y either, for the record. But social pressure is a helluva thing especially for a high schooler.
Ah poor Paul Joseph Watson, good luck to him finding those smart tweets.
On the subject of Sparta, didn’t the Spartans essentially kill themselves off with their overly prescriptive lifestyle and obsession with militarism?
