Yesterday afternoon, a totally real feminist who couldn’t possibly be a troll pretending to be a feminist, no way, took to Twitter to announce a bold new campaign to fight domestic violence and defeat patriarchy by encouraging feminists to give themselves black eyes, thus showing the patriarchy that, uh, women can punch themselves?
The name of the operation, I mean initiative: #FeministBlackOut.
In case you’re having a little trouble reading the text over the clouds there, I took the liberty of enhancing it a little:
Er, “doing onto?”
News of this totally real not fake at all plan quickly spread beyond Hannah’s three Twitter followers, and before long another totally real feminist started up a new but totally legit Twitter account to support #FeministBlackOut and share her own picture which was totally a picture of her for real and not just a picture of a woman with a black eye swiped from a story in the Mirror.
I’m sure her single Twitter follower was suitably enlightened.
Despite the fact that this was obviously a totally real feminist campaign and not, say, the least convincing attempt by channers to troll feminists ever, there were some who were skeptical:
I'd be willing to wager #FeministBlackOut is another production of /b/

How cynical do you have to be to assume that this campaign is anything other than completely legiti — hold on, what’s this?

4chan uses a wordfilter for certain words. Someone on Twitter said that ”cuck” get replaced with ”stallion”.
And it seems a large part of 4chan is too stupid to do any real harm.
@Alan
Floreat St. custard’s!

Every so often I’ll run across someone holding up some study that claims GLBT people are on average wealthier than straight people, and therefore can’t be oppressed. (All it actually proves is that people who are financially secure are more likely to feel safe coming out, especially a couple of decades ago when these “studies” kept popping up.)
I always ask them: “Does being gay make you rich, or does being rich make you gay? Just to be on the safe side, those of you who want to stay straight should send me all your money.”
Wait. How would that fit in with the statistics on LGBT+ homelessness? And then there’s the fact that sitcoms aren’t real…
@SFHC,
Both could be true. Just means they have a flatter wealth curve.
It makes a lot of sense to me to think that gay men would on average end up fairly wealthy. If they get married/partnered, they have two male incomes. Plus, they have fewer children on average, and children chew up wealth like you wouldn’t believe.
Higher risk of poverty and homeless don’t necessarily have to mean a lower arithmetic mean wealth.
The stats are almost certainly for openly gay people, and wealthier people feel safer coming out, skewing the numbers upward. And the arithmetic mean doesn’t necessarily tell you anything meaningful even about the group studied; you can get the same mean from a classic bell curve or from 90% being below the mean and the remaining 10% being very far above.
@darkstatistic
Yeah, basically. http://satwcomic.com/mother-s-day
The thigh gap thing?
I am intrigued, anyone care to explain/have a relevant link?
While I love the idea of seeing what Channers can be duped into doing, I’d be afraid to touch anything they sent me.
@darkstatistic –
I think this is Brit / Aussie (?) Mother’s Day vs US / (Canadian?) Mother’s Day.
Here in the US, we wait until the flowers really get going (mid-May) for Mother’s Day 😀
That way our 3-year-olds can pick a handful of buttercups as presents and destroy us with cute.

Oh, and if any 4channers wanted to send me a gaming-class laptop to mock the fact that I’m a console gamer and/or the “fact” that I’m female and so obvs don’t actually game, they totally should.
That’d really show me.
I also totally wouldn’t think of doing a clean wipe, so any malicious code they snuck on would merrily churn away.
@mockingbird
Aussie Mother’s Day is in May. ^^;
@Makroth – For real?
Also, my autocorrect thinks you should he named Makoto.
It was quite insistent.
@Razwick – As confused as you.
@Aussies and Canadians (edit: especially SFHC 😉 ) after reading sbel’s link: AW, C’MON!
You were always Mom’s favorite!
Couldn’t you at least celebrate Mother’s Day on the day she wants?
(We, on the other hand, have been her Awful Child for quite some time, so a 2 month late celebration is in keeping with tradition.)
A thigh gap is when a woman’s thighs do not touch together and there is a space between them. 4chan set out to create a campaign to make the thigh gap trendy and something a woman needs in order to not be considered fat and they were pretty successful. It worked because a lot of women already worry about the size of their thighs. Beauty standards are already arbitrary but rigid and almost impossible to achieve.
Their other attempts at creating fake movements have been less successful because they’ve involved straw feminist assumptions. Feminists didn’t fall for end Father’s day because we don’t hate fathers. We didn’t fall for free bleeding because while ending the shame surrounding menstruation would be a great thing, most of us are like everyone else in not wanting to neglect basic hygiene. Instead of preying on a very real insecurity, they’re just wanking about stupid stereotypes.
I don’t even know what they were trying to do with this one because it doesn’t make sense even if you think feminists are all like the straw feminist that misogynists have made up.
It makes sense if you’ve convinced yourselves that women aren’t actually human beings, but some kind of alien creature with dog-level intelligence.
I base this on what we’ve seen them documented to say about women. It’s not even an exaggeration of what they believe.
I’d feel awfully oppressed if channers sent me gift cards to movie theaters, department stores, and such.
I’d like to get oppressed by kitty toys and kitty supplies like bags of clumping microsand and non-grain almost full meat kitty food. Especially those plastic tunnel-toys where you can put food or a ball rolling. Or those canvas tunnels for scooting around.
Verily, I’d be TOTALLY oppressed by that.
Can we get that oppression going, MRAs and channers?
Wait, 4chan started that BS? Every time I think it’s not possible to feel more disgust for them, I’m proven wrong.
Re regional differences in date of Mother’s Day: I was scared for a moment there! I thought I’d forgotten it. But since it’s stereotypically men and not women who forget important dates, I must be unfeminine and thus terrible. 🙂
I’d also be really oppressed by a vacation right now, but I don’t think it’s possible to send a vacation.
How about chocolate. Dark mint chocolate. I could definitely be oppressed by that.
There’d be nothing more oppressive than a top-of-the-line laptop with Fallout 4 preinstalled. I’d fall to my knees and cry to the uncaring heavens, “Feminism has been thwarted forever! Or at least until I’ve created my character. Same thing, really.”
The thigh-gap ideal may have been spread around the internet by 4chan, but it goes back a ways. I remember reading a memoir set in the twenties where the writer went through a teen-aged phase of wearing a scarf tied elaborately around her waist when she wore a bathing suit. She had the scarf ends hanging down in both the front and back to hide the fact that there was no space between her thighs. She had read in a women’s magazine that a good pair of legs only touch at the knees, mid-calf, and the ankles.
(I read this when I was a teen, and promptly became self-conscious about my overlapping thighs.)
They managed to fool a few right wingers over at Fox and Friends and National Review (#EndFathersDay hoax). Hilarious If that were the extent of it. Unfortunately Fox has a rather sizeable, one might say, gullible audience.
Makroth, I really disagree.
Gamergate largely started on 4chan before getting the boot. They released Zoe’s (probably other, I’m almost positive) address and phone number to the masses. She is still dealing with the fallout of that to this day. There have been murders vaguely connected with 4chan. Even without those examples they are responsible for so much harassment that acting like they’re not a problem is on part with telling harassment victims to “just get off the internet”.
@booburry
I’d say directly connected, rather than vaguely. The Umpqua College shooter learned his hatred there, posted his plans there and was egged on by other posters there. I’m still slightly disgusted that they weren’t shut down* for it.
Otherwise, agreed.
*”FREEZE PEACH ABLOO BLOO BLOO!” Nope. Murder is not speech.
Notice how they don’t only want the women to give themselves black eyes, but also there significant others. Significant others that they specifically are male. MRA’s talk a good game about how feminists supposedly ignore male victims of domestic violence, but when they think no one is watching they not only don’t care about them, they actively encourage there abuse.
So it can conveniently be videoed and promptly be uploaded on YouTube, dontcha know.
