So yesterday was the big day, the day on which the famously repugnant pickup artist Roosh “No Means Yes” Valizadeh originally planned to hold 165 meetups for his fans around the world, only to cancel them after a bit of a public outcry — you may have heard something about that.
While some of Roosh’s fanboys ended up meeting in secret, the only Roosh-related events that took place in public yesterday (besides a sparsely attended press conference called by Roosh himself) were rallies against Roosh and all of the noxious things he stands for.
Here’s a roundup of pics and videos from a number of these anti-rape-culture rallies.

And a longer video:
More details here and here; the second piece also mentions a protest in Edinburgh.
In Wellington, New Zealand:

Wait, you’re saying to yourself, surely that can’t be the real Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords?
It is. He spent much of yesterday mocking the Roosh fanboys who showed up in his mentions.
@Cernovich no one has ever found a man holding a massive gun less intimidating.

Here’s a writeup on the protests there.

Lynch tells me that after she tweeted these pics she had “Roosh’s followers calling me at 1am and playing horror movies on my voicemail.” Because of course.

More on that protest here.
There were also protests in Berlin; in Shrewsbury; in Newcastle (where a small contingent of the far-right English Defence League tried to hijack the protest); in New York City (though the only info I’ve found about it so far is from the blog of a Roosh fan) and presumably many other places as well.
If you have info or pictures or video of any of the other protests, please let me know by posting in the comments below, and I can add it to the post.
Here, by the way, is what things looked like at Roosh’s press conference yesterday.

I guess I’ll have to watch the video of the press conference and see just how thoroughly Roosh “destroys” the media, huh? He’s certainly done a fine job of destroying his own reputation as a human being.
But you said it pithier, Bernardo Soares. “Millenials, ugh”, sums that comment up perfectly.
I had to click ‘like’ as soon as I saw that graphic of Roosh in the toilet.
They have no concept of playing on a sports team or having teammates.
I agree with this. I mean, who ever heard of a professional sportsman with toxic attitudes towards women?
(/s, obvs)
@ Imperator Kahlo
🙂
I’d bow my knee to you, but I’m from a Forge World and have a complicated relationship with authority, so I’d rather not give EJ an opportunity to use that.
I classify renaming gross things into “roosh” as a personal attack, so something that should not be done.
Outside of the “insult to rock” factor, there is the fact it’s already very easy to attack him on what he is.
I’d classify it as mockery and well deserved.
Thank you, Imperator Kahlo et al; there’s a lot that’s troublesome about that comment, not least the fact that genuinely “socially awkward” people who might be deeply unhappy about how hard it is for them to connect to others (thinking of someone I know who’s on the spectrum, for example) are perfectly capable of being decent humans beings, and of seeing and despising Roosh/PUA-MRA crap for the dreck that it is.
Also being thin/fat/sporty/not sporty/conventionally attractive or not has precisely FA x zero to do with this.
Sadly, the protests in Amsterdam turned out to be a bit more modest, since the news hadn’t hit as big here as in other places. Still, it’s encouraging to see so many Kiwis and Scots turn out against Roosh.
There’s a Lindy West article about this in today’s Guardian.
It’s just gone up so the comments haven’t yet degenerated into the usual MRA apologetics. There is one comment I like though from a chap saying:
“I’ve never heard of this Roosh V. Mind you, I haven’t even seen Roosh I to IV yet.”
Doesn’t add a lot to the debate but made me giggle.
I’ve heard that only the even-numbered Rooshes are any good.
I’m guessing there were more journalists covering the average protest than were at the press conference.
@ Alan:
it’s probably like Star Wars, only the other way round: Roosh I to III were good, but IV was a disappointment, and V is just
.
I really, really hope there’s not going to be a Roosh VI.
I can’t help but notice that Jemaine Clement has his little blue tick while Milo is denied! MISANDRY! BLARGH!
@Terrabeau
– that might be because there was a Pegida demo planned on the same day, and a lot of people who might have protested the Roosh meetup went to the anti-Pegida rally and then left town when things turned nasty (that’s what I did, anyway). Also, protests in general just tend not to be very big here unfortunately.
I’ve always subscribed to the Baggins method: Keep the trolls talking in circles until they’re exposed to the cold light of day.
@ Drezden
I’m the same; although that’s more in regards to the concept of “second breakfast”.
There is a Roosh supporter in the comments now 🙁
There’s also someone who is whining about how Roosh isn’t an MRA.
And of course there are several comments blaming misogyny on feminists being too mean and uppity and one saying we need to win Roosh’s supporters over by creating a fat acceptance movement for men.
Given Imperator Kahlo’s name, bowing the knee to her might be appropriate.
I’d actually be entirely behind this. Male body acceptance is a thing that needs to happen, and our gender is pretty far behind women with regards to movements like this.
Owen McLovely has diagnosed the problem and that problem is that young people exist, and we’re just awful. Sorry, Owen McLovely. If only your generation, the very best generation to have ever existed, had been the last one.
@ viscaria
In our defence, we did have a pretty good try at making that happen; what with the Cold War and wrecking the environment.
That Lindy West piece is great.
Oh, and if anyone has had trouble commenting lately, for some reason wordpress is tossing seemingly random comments, esp those with pics in them, directly into the trash. I retrieved some of these; if you’ve had trouble commenting, email me
The Fat Acceptance movement and Health At Every Size movement are already fighting for all genders. Is there something specific to the way men experience sizeism that requires a special movement? I’m curious.
We’re none of us blameless, I’m sure. In 15-20 years my future children will be telling me about all the ways my generation has failed them. I just get so sick of hearing how much I apparently suck from people who have no capacity to consider that life experiences that differ from their own can still be valid.
Edit: Also my mom was wicked cool so.
An excerpt from the response (by Roosh, clearly) to one of the first questions asked at his little press conference (video linked by @Auntie Alias). If every answer is this verbose, I might have trouble slogging through this whole video.
