UPDATE: The pet shop is closed? Roosh V claims he’s cancelled his meetups; apparently he’s just organizing them secretly now

So sorry to hear it
So sorry to hear it

STOP THE PRESSES!

Everyone’s favorite pickup artist guru Roosh Valizadeh has announced that he is cancelling all of the 165 meetups in 43 countries he had planned for this coming Saturday.

I can no longer guarantee the safety or privacy of the men who want to attend on February 6, especially since most of the meetups can not be made private in time. While I can’t stop men who want to continue meeting in private groups, there will be no official Return Of Kings meetups. The listing page has been scrubbed of all locations. I apologize to all the supporters who are let down by my decision.

Huh. Should we take him at his word on this? Roosh, in addition to being a terrible person, is also a bit of a troll. It wouldn’t exactly shock me if Roosh’s alleged cancellation turned out to be nothing more than a ruse, that the meetups are still on, and that he’s simply moved the planning for his meetups out of the public eye.

[EDITED TO ADD: It looks like this is indeed what he’s doing, organizing them secretly on the Roosh V forum, now closed to outsiders, at least according to sources with accounts on the forum.][EDITED AGAIN: Here are some screenshots (not mine) of his forums showing some of the places where they’re still trying to organize meetups.]

[EDITED AGAIN 2: REDDIT BOOGALOO There’s a stickied post in the Red Pill subreddit inviting all properly credentialed red pill alpha dogs to come to these super secret alternate meetups.]

If he really has cancelled them, the question becomes: did he do it because he was genuinely afraid for the safety of himself and his fanboys? Or did he take a look at all the protests being scheduled and realize he would look foolish if, in location after location around the globe, tiny groups of Roosh fanboys faced off against big crowds of mocking feminists? Hell, maybe he realized that in a lot of the locations he announced he was going to have trouble getting even one person to show up.

Will we ever learn where the pet shop is?

Are we entirely sure there were ever any real events planned?

At the same time he announces “hidden/private meetings”. I don’t believe it.

Let’s have some singing, shall we?

Douchey Rooshie ran away, / (interjection: NO!)
Bravely ran away, away; / (interjection: I didn’t!)
When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail, and fled;
Brave Sir Rooshie turned about,
Apparently he chickened out…
[song gradually fades into the distance etc]
Bravest of the brave, Sir Rooshie!

Yeah, these were never actually going to happen. But I do hope Roosh still makes his attempt to enter Australia illegally by boat. That should be fun.

Bahahaha!

I loved how much press this got. People who had never even heard of MRAs and PUAs were suddenly talking about how much this guy sucks. I even had angry posts about him all over my timeline. It was wonderful. For once I wasn’t the “militant feminist” outlier.

I’m about 1000% certain this was a big PR stunt by him and wow, did it work. He can claim persecution by the feminazis and the feminist dominated press and rake in more sympathy and more donations and keep living without doing any real work for a while now.

But I do hope Roosh still makes his attempt to enter Australia illegally by boat.

I can already imagine him setting off from a Californian dock, Looney Tunes style in a small rowing boat, laughing at his own cleverness.

Boo-hoo, Roosh. “I can no longer guarantee the safety or privacy of the men who want to attend on February 6…” Yes, yes, we’re sure you care so much about your fans, and that you/they are the ones being unfairly repressed. Furthermore, you’re TOTALLY against doxxing and harassment. /s

Considering how incompetent all the MRA’s seem to be at organizing public events, with Roosh a particularly spectacular example of such; I’d say this is just really poor execution of an idea rather than a brilliant PR scheme.

@Xanthë is right. As is @katz. I wonder how much of this has to do with Roosh realizing that it takes a freaking long time to get to Australia by boat.
(fwiw I’m still waiting on a card that was mailed to me in November by an Australian. I was warned that it was by boat and that it would take a while… but I want my card!)

Good! I hope they really are cancelled.

I do think this shitshow got him more traffic-I saw a post on Tumblr reminding people not to visit his site. It had links to other sites with the same info (not this one, sadly).

Oh Roosh, can’t win for losing.

Long time lurker, first time commenter… Love the blog, big fan, David. Keep up the excellent work!

I’m a little skeptical that it is all over, so will be keeping half an eye out in Cardiff for Roosh’s merry band of misogynist demagogues that breathe molten horseshit… But tentatively, I’m happy.

Teehee.
Roosh can arrange and cancel all the meetings he wants. All that matters to me is that this got picked up by the media, reported, and the majority people is disgusted by him.

Also:

I can no longer guarantee the safety or privacy of the men who want to attend on February 6

I imagined the guys who were partial to his neomasculinity shtick would consider it beneath them to ask that their safety be guaranteed. It doesn’t sound stereotipically manly to me.

(I guess I’ll be sticking with pearls for the rest of eternity, then)

I’m not buying it. I’ll have to keep an eye on a couple of creeps posting comments on my local paper. One was stupid enough to admit being a fanboy and another one was trying to dismiss Roosh’s writings as satire.

Hi there, Soreta Yuki! 🙂

ETA: The original designated location in my city isn’t even open at 8:00 p.m. so that was some lousy planning.

I was pretty sure this was going to happen.

I never for a minute believed his fans were capable of organizing 150+ events in one weekend and arranging secret venues for them. I strongly suspect he never intended these events to be real, he just wanted a news cycle.

Lightcastle

I give it about 50/50 they were called off.

Since they were never big events, just get togethers, it is trivial to move them. They were never big public things anyway. Or he just reschedules them since he got his press. (Most likely he doesn’t bother and just tells the local tribe leaders to schedule their own whenever.)

By canceling them, he gets to avoid people reporting they were overwhelmed by protests. (Even though he wasn’t staging rallies in the first place.)

So all in all a big win for him, although people who really loathe him probably also got to expand the knowledge of how horrible he is.

Well, according to our only reliable local paper – no, not the Seattle Times, sillies! The Stranger! – there are meetups planned in the Seattle area. Ugh.

The Stranger also has a suggestion for what to do should one find oneself near one of these groups:

He will never be accepted by the people he is trying to touch with his post-“PUA” career pivot.

He lacks the… genetic heritage to be successful. It’s hard to be a white supremacist when you’re Iranian. I’m sure he fools himself by soothing himself on his Aryan heritage.

For that I find him a pitiable creature.

In Canada, where I am, mayors of some of our biggest cities released statements saying that he was unwelcome because of all his gross behaviour. So, I don’t think he’d be showing up anywhere here without a fight, especially from law enforcement, because one city (I think it was Victoria) did threaten him with arrest.

I vaguely assume it’s some sort of false flag and then there will be ‘real’ meetings and they’ll be all cheered about their intelligence and how they beat the FEMINIST CONSPIRACY and they’ll accomplish sod all.

Sometimes the whole ‘I’m goin’ Austraya!’ comments from folk overseas come across with the same air as ‘I’m going to Narnia!’ It isn’t a real place to them. A while back when Obama got elected we had a tonne of rethuglican spouting the ‘oh yeah? I’m MOVING TO AUSTRALIA!’ line, which was puzzling, because at the time we were led by an atheist, childless woman. Pointing this out did no good, because for them, Australia was a mythical place to be name dropped occasionally.

@Curry

If the people Roosh is trying to touch don’t want him to touch them, they have every right to cut off his hands…I mean to not be touched by Roosh. And if necessary use non-lethal and not likely to maim means of subduing him so he does not touch them. Any touching from Roosh = BAD TOUCH. VERY VERY BAD TOUCH. 😉

May he go forth and walk only upon the legos forever and always barefoot.

P.S. I don’t believe he’s telling the truth about all meetups being cancelled.

I hate that I’m still sort of torn on what this was; I assumed it was more PR stunt than reality, but I also feel like it’s still a huge possibility. And I still don’t necessarily feel safe going anywhere near the location mentioned for Taipei (nearest city mentioned to where I live). My friend contacted the bar mentioned for the meet-up to let them know about it and found out that they had no prior knowledge of this and didn’t support it at all.

And in trying to ascertain more information about the Taiwan location, I found the terrifying White Boys Club for Bagging Asian Chicks. This helps prop up my “I’m not really comfortable talking to Western blokes, especially white ones, in Asia” feelings. They’re either “feminists” (because they think feminists are sexually liberated! and therefore more willing to give in to casual sex — I’ve personally heard this line and talked to other women who’ve been inundated with it) or “I only date Asian chicks because Western chicks are bitches and Asian chicks are easy” racist douchebags.

From Steampunked:

A while back when Obama got elected we had a tonne of rethuglican spouting the ‘oh yeah? I’m MOVING TO AUSTRALIA!’ line, which was puzzling, because at the time we were led by an atheist, childless woman.

Don’t forget that you also have had strict gun laws since Howard, and a lot of these creeps are totally <3 gun rights <3 people; it's so bizarre that anyone would've chosen Australia. It was also fun that they were choosing Canada, too. We can't have healthcare! If we get single-payer healthcare, I'm moving to Canada…? Oh, okay, sure, that makes sense. (Same pretty much applies to Australia, too.)

Lightcastle

I’m still confused why anyone thought he was going to Australia.

He was never organizing meetings, though, so that was hardly an impediment. He asked locals if they wanted to be tribe leaders and told everyone to do a meetup at a given day.

So all he does now (assuming he won’t do the big “I tricked you all!” later) is tell them to organize their meetings on their own time.

Dammit, and I had a plan too!

I was going to arrive early at the meeting spot so as to get there first, and then as people trickled in I was going to tell them that I was the organiser and that it had been moved to a new site “for operational security reasons.” Each Pet Shop Boy would be given a different “new site” to go to, so that they would wait fruitlessly without meeting one another.

I had a list of Funniest Places in London To Send Them all picked out.

I can see the argument for bringing Roosh’s vile opinions to public attention (“sunlight is the best disinfect” etc.).

However there’s also the danger that it plays into his hands. No matter what the outcome, he’ll twist it into a victory.

How any victory translates into to a real benefit for him I have no idea. I can’t work out whether he’s cashing in on and promoting mysogyny for financial reasons or whether his primary motivation is just to troll and any cash from that is just a side benefit.

Waleed Aly makes a strong case for just ignoring him.
