Welcome to the Winter 2015 We Hunted the Mammoth Pledge Drive! Yes, this is the time on WHTM where I beg you all for money. So let’s get on with it:
If you enjoy this blog, and can afford it, please click on the “donate” button below and send a few bucks my way. Or, if you’d prefer, a lot of bucks.
You don’t need a PayPal account; credit cards are accepted, and there are other options as well. If you’re outside the US, PayPal will automatically convert your weird non-American money into American bucks.
Thanks for all of your donations, whether big or small. And thanks to all of those generous souls who donate between pledge drives as well.
Your donations — along with the fairly modest amount of money I get for ads — keep the cats in cat food, and enable me to keep this blog going; without them, WHTM as we know it would cease to exist.
I usually do four pledge drives a year, but I sort of got distracted, and so this pledge drive is basically the 3rd and 4th quarter pledge drives combined. So if you can afford it, please consider kicking in a bit more than usual this time.
As I’ve said before, I also greatly appreciate all the non-monetary things you all do to support the blog, from contributing smart and funny comments, designing graphics, sending me tips on stuff to write about, sharing posts on Twitter and Facebook, alerting me to trolls in the comments, and more.
I do my best to make sure your generosity is rewarded.
Yesterday, I officially unveiled the new, redesigned WHTM. It’s a redesign focused on usability, offering a less-cluttered layout and a number of improvements designed to make reading and commenting on the blog more pleasant. We’re still working out the kinks, so any feedback you have would be greatly appreciated.
If you donate in order to help spread the message of this blog, rest assured you’re getting a lot of bang to your buck.
2015 has been WHTM’s best year ever, with the site averaging more than a million page views a month and playing a significant role in shaping press coverage about the antifeminist, anti-woman backlash online.
Your contributions to this blog — monetary and otherwise — have made all that possible, and I’m deeply grateful to you all.
So click on that donate button. You know you want to.
Donated! 🙂
I’m afraid I can’t donate this time around, but have an actual bank that’s very similar to your gif.
I can’t give until after Jan 4th.
I found this Russell Brand interview of PUA guru Neil Strauss. Strauss said he carried around a toy monkey as a pick up tactic back in the day.
Thanks, dhag, and everyone else who’s donated so far!
Paradoxical, yeah, I ran across that while looking for pics. I kind of prefer the live cat version though.
Donated! Thank you for all your hard work. 🙂 And cat pictures. 😉
*is broke* but I’m only noting three issues now (down from what, a dozen?)
1) Your Twitter widget overflows the right edge of its background — probably an easy fix, but purely cosmetic
2) It’s still shrinking and then resizing on load on my iPad — all my guesses are well into the world of browser compatibility oddities and again, purely an oddity not an issue
3) links, image embeds, the comment form not doing the saved gravatar thing, etc — the minor annoyances
While I’m broke, I’m happy to look at the WP backend and see if I can sort any of it, email me if you want more eyes looking at it!
Will be donating.
David – The old site had a “view web version” button which let me escape from the mobile version of the site. If it’s technically feasible, could we please have that button again? I find the web versions of websites far easier to navigate on my mobile, ironically, than the mobile version.
Hey, nice timing. I’ll be getting a paycheck windfall on Wednesday, I’ll finally be able to toss something into the pot then.
Thanks to everyone else who’s donated!
EJ, I’ll look into the “web version” thing. Was this on a phone? I know that on my tablet I get the web version.
Argenti, not sure what to do about the Twitter thing. Has anyone else run across this? I’m using Twitter’s own widget, which is pretty basic with its options.
And I’m not sure what you mean with #3? I’ll try to get images to embed like they used to; are links not embedding either?
Are other people having trouble logging in with gravatars?
Let me just try a link to see if if embeds:

And a Tweet while I’m at it:

David – on my phone I get the mobile version, with all the “sidebar” content at the bottom under the main body of the page, rather than parallel to it. It makes the page difficult to navigate.
I’m reading the page using Chrome 47.0.2526.76 running under Android 4.2.2 on a Samsung Galaxy S4, if that helps. (A black one. It might work better if I had a white phone instead.)
Donated a bit, hope it helps!
I’m working off of a laptop in my office. Husbeast prefers it if I do financial stuffs on the other computer in the living room. Will get out there once I’ve had sufficient coffee…
Donated. Because you and all the wonderful people here help to keep my faith in humanity alive.
Congrats on the new site, guess you’d better have a donation to keep the bills paid for it 🙂
Thanks, folks! Every little bit helps! (Big bits too, of course.)
Links are linking, but some run clear off the right edge, seems to be mostly/only pictures where the link doesn’t have hyphens to break on.
The Twitter box… I’d just figure out the ID of it and stick a “max-width: 100% !important” on it, that tends to solve widget behavioral issues. Not a widget setting, a line of code in the theme CSS, cuz yeah, widget options often suck.
None of it is a proper issue, just those minor kinks that take forever to iron out.
Long, long time lurker, first time commenter. Many times over the years I’ve wanted to support your efforts, and many times over the years I have been unable to do so. Probably something to do with chronic poorness and poor financial management skills, but finally, this time, I still can’t. One of these days I will be able to give more than completely-unknown-by-David (until now) moral support, but as of right now that’s all I’ve got. I’m mainly just writing this because I finally feel courageous enough to sincerely thank David for his time and effort on this blog. It is an extremely important place for me, and on many occasions your blog has made me feel better, somehow. So thank you, David, really, this blog is pretty great.
Is the gif strobe-flashing for anyone else? Could be a seizure issue.
@Allen
If you mean the cat GIF right at the top, it’s working normally for me. Have you tried hard-refreshing the page?
@Ethan
Welcome! =)
Ethan, thanks! I will gladly accept your moral support. No one who’s broke should feel guilty for not donatng.
Allen, it isn’t flashing for me, and no one else has mentioned it flashing for them.
if anyone else is having a problem with it let me know.
I’m under the impression that something relatively small like a flashing gif is unlikely to cause a seizure, but I may be wrong; I avoid posting flashing gifs regardless.
