So right-wing garbage site Breitbart has apparently decided to pander to the angry gamer demo even more explicitly with the launch of Breitbart Tech, “a brand new vertical dedicated to coverage of tech, gaming, and web culture.” Naturally, they’ve tapped the unlovely and ungracious Milo Yiannopoulos, Gamergate panderer par excellence, for editor.
Yesterday Milo went to the KotakuInAction subreddit, one of Gamergate’s main hubs, to announce the good news.
One Puckish Redditor gave Milo a little pop quiz to test his knowledge of technology and gaming. Milo, well, failed it.
One might presume that such an obvious fake gamer would quickly be hounded from the business by an angry Gamergate mob.
But, nah, someone explained all the answers to Milo and the regulars went on celebrating Milo’s new gig.
Because it’s all about ethics in knowing absolutely nothing about video games.

“Gamers, by and large, know a lot about tech and are not going to be content with cheap meaningless word-count: they’re going to expect reviews by experts, they’re going to expect exclusives, they’re going to expect interviews, and so on.”
I doubt even the #GG crowd is actually delusional enough to expect real tech coverage out of Breitbart. I expect this is just an attempt to cater to the GG audience as well as their core audience of movement conservatives within the context of all the recent discussion of women in the tech world in general. You can see from the reddit thread that nobody seriously expected him to be well versed on the topics he’ll be covering, nor did anyone seem offended that he wasn’t. They simply don’t care. It’s not really about the games after all, it never has been.
You mean they aren’t?
@Uncivilized
Sorry, I answered to katz before seeing your answer.
I thought your explanation was very clear so I though that was the joke (maybe not a good one, but I laughed) but I take back my words if you’re not in on it.
Maybe my snark-dar is as good as my gaydar (which is, not at all).
Re: Dick-measuring contests
What I hate is the part when everyone blames it on “human nature”, like we had to share the blame for toxic masculinity.
Oh no, no way. I know how to interact with people without feeling the need to wave my dick around the place and make everything about whose is best.
I’m not taking responsibility for masculinity making you a coward and a dickhead.
Jesus. Of all the shit in Gamergate this kinda stuff is what scares me the most. Milo (and others) took a ton of misguided young men and teenagers and is quickly turning them into right wing cronies and bigots. Were watching Fight Club play out before our very eyes.
@justlikeheaven – that’s an important point. These gamergaters get used by their talking heads, exploited for money, time, clicks and page views. Even obvious scams seem not to register.
“it’s that simple, and not anything to do with technical marvels. film could easily be shot at much higher frame rates, so long as we replace every old projector on the planet….”
Though isn’t that kind of already happening with the mass conversion to digital?
I know of quite a few small theatre owners who’ve had to find way to front huge outlays so that they’ll still be able to run content.
@idledillettante
Yeah Ive seen a noticeable rise in the past year of anti-feminism among some of my fellow classmates at my highschool. When I brought up feminism a friend of mine immediately brought up the whole “women fake rape and feminists only believe the women” shit. And while I dont think he is either involved in GG or Brietbart in any way the whole anti-feminist sentiment has grown among most “Gamers” my age.
@idledillettante
That last response was kinda off topic. More to the point I see a worrying scenario with sites like this taking a ton of teens and feeding them insidous views about sex, race, and politics. Luckily Reaxxion shut down. If there one influence a ton of young frustrated teenage boys need its Roosh.
In certain 3D scenes prevalent in games, higher frame rate means less nausea. VR goggles in particular need 90 FPS or higher.
A lot of games are fine at almost any frame rate. Who cares if your sudoku board refreshes at 1 or 100 FPS. Generally, 2d games are a lot more tolerant of slow speeds — at worst you get annoyed.
That’s literally the reason, though?
Here is a quote from an article about Monsters University.
So fully animated movies are 60fps BUT they can cheat and reduce frame rate when they blur because you don’t have to worry about seeing everything nice and crisp when blurring while in a video game, you HAVE to see everything well because you don’t know how fast the player is moving or if they’re moving at a single moment.
You’d have to build and program a whole new engine to simulate motion blur at any angle, in any place, at any time while just double the framerate is super easy and would take less disc space PLUS reduce the strain on the hardware for larger compatibility. I mean, we still have shit hair physics in video games because you can’t animate each bit of hair to make sure it looks just right when doing certain things because it would take so much resources to make sure every animation blends into each other well.
There ARE games that do have simulated blur (like Nosgoth, I believe) but it’s recommended you turn it off because one) it makes the game go faster and two) you can actually see things, which is key, because you have people trying to kill you and moving around with simulated blur doesn’t do well for your field of vision.
Of course, that’s the downfall of realistic 3D games. More stylized and cartoony 3D and 2D games don’t really have this problem, especially when in some games (like Psychonauts or Viewtiful Joe) they can put in those visibly cartoony motion waves to simulate motion blur, which takes less resources than nice realistic ones.
I got my copy on Steam as payment for an illustration commission, and I had to go out and find mods that I had to install in the game’s files just so I can play it on my less-than-five-years-old computer.
I had to do the same thing for Saint’s Row II because the game’s a really shitty console port (but it’s got the best story and character creation out of all the games, IMO. The clothes are kind of shitty, and I like the shops better in 3 and 4, but I can have a really chubby lady in 2, and that’s all that matters).
Don’t get me wrong though, I like playing some games on console just so I can not have to worry about that kind of shit, and I can sit on the couch.
Which is so much bullshit.
Although, it’s part of “disqualification”, a way that people try to force others out of gaming. It’s kind of summed up to “This game isn’t really a game, according to me, so you can’t be a gamer and like that game!”
For instance: I know there are lots of self-described gamers who would “disqualify” me as a gamer simply because I like Animal Crossing, never mind the fact that I also love Resident Evil, Saint’s Row, and Fallout.
While the trend of macho posturing for “gamer cred” or “hardcore” status, and the policing of the “geek” identity is stupid and toxic, I don’t really think the challenge to Yiannopoulos qualifies. I don’t think someone needs to know all about Stevens or Linux or Net Neutrality or the details of graphical processing to call themselves a gamer, but I do think you should probably know all that stuff to run a gaming news site.
Anyone else thinks Milo didn’t make it to the end of the comment before answering?
oh my god
OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD
THAT’S SUPPOSED TO BE MILO, PEOPLE
Also methinks this artist is lazy.
@Falconer
Oops. >< I posted that in the other thread.
TIL what frame rates are, and why they matter (or don’t).
I also figured out on my own that they don’t matter if one is playing mahjongg. Or any other game where using your brain is key.
I hereby surmise that GamerGits are not very big on brain games. Because brains.
Snurk.
Unfortunately, a lot of game development is essentially a dick-measuring contest between devs, and the stereotypical side of the fanbase isn’t much better.
What’s so funny is that the gaming industry is at “the cutting edge of technology” with consoles and computers being incredibly powerful, but as far as the other portions of a game is concerned, we might as well be stuck in the 70s and early 80s with crappy story-telling, shallow gameplay, and the treating of game projects as the extension of one’s penis.
I don’t really look forward to having to work in the game industry, but I know that if I want to see better games get made, I have to do something.
@pandapool: Sorry! I didn’t check the other thread. Oops!
Gotta admit, I do like the Gaytriarchy Illuminati pyramid.
OMG, Stupid Toon Milo looks like Geert Wilders. AND The Donald. Yiiiiiiii.
Also: “Fabulousness” as a shield? Against the Gaytriarchy? Le SNURK!
@Falconer
I wouldn’t say he’s lazy, he’s just using certain imagery again because that imagery conveys certain emotions with ease. They’re still very well drawn.
I thought he already was a failed tech journalist?
