I guess the folks at Ubisoft didn’t get the memo that only dudes hunted mammoths.
(Maybe because it’s not true. It may be that no one did. But a video game about people looting already dead mammoths probably wouldn’t sell many copies.)

OMG, I’m not much for the Farcry series but this actually looks cool and yay prehistoric women being badass!
Well now that you’ve said it, I can totally envision a “Mammoth Scavenging Simulator” indie game. Find a dead mammoth, and use purposefully wonky controls to butcher it while swinging your club wildly at buzzards and stuff.
It’d be nice if the player character could be female too, but hey, it’s a start. =P
@Johanna
I agree. This is the first Far Cry I’ve been curious about. Might have to try it out.
Can’t wait for the gator tears over this.
Mammoths? Without giants herding them? Feels weird.
I’ve enjoyed watching playthroughs of the last couple of Far Cry games on YouTube, although that was mostly due to the jokey commentary style of Jesse Cox. Now this is starting to get me interested in getting a better PC and maybe giving it a go myself. Now all I need to do is save up loadsamoney… 😛
@Kootiepatra:
I can already hear, in my mind, Jim Sterling complaining about the control scheme. “Just because it’s a prehistoric game doesn’t excuse the controls from feeling like this!”
@Kootiepatra: something like Surgeon Simulator? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surgeon_Simulator_2013 That would be hilarious.
I’m waiting for a sequel to Blood Dragon with a playable female character.
Haha, you guys, Ubisoft doesn’t know what female characters are. They had one game with a female lead and it was a mobile game no one bought.
@EJ: I’m sure Yahtzee will complain about the camera, although I don’t intend to watch his videos anymore.
We know. They made pathetic excuses for not having playable female characters in Assassin’s Creed.
There’s really no reason why a series like Far Cry can’t let you customize your character.
@Falconer: Nor do I.
I’m not convinced humans didn’t hunt Mammoths (something wiped out the pleistocene megafauna whenever human beings arrived in new environments) but the new findings are very interesting. Game looks pretty cool too, wish it was on the 360ps3 consoles so I could actually buy a copy.
Two words: pit traps.
That wouldn’t make an exciting game, but it would certainly be a more realistic one.
If I get to fight Vaas’s prehistoric ancestor in this game I’ll be a happy man.
“did I ever tell you, the meaning of these cave paintings?”
But here’s to hoping I can play a female character or at least customize to a female character
I just thought of something relevant: Back when Walking With was still a documentary series and not a crappy ripoff of Ice Age, the Beasts series included a scene where Neanderthals hunted mammoths by using fire to scare them off cliffs (one of the more realistic scenarios). The hunting party included just as many women as men.
Science and gaming are only just catching up with a 15-year-old documentary.
*Accepted mainstream science, I mean.
Can’t we have heforshe hunting mammoths
Skybison — to be fair, things like SHFC said and the net hunting the article described make hella more sense than spear hunting an animal that has its own spears! Also, idk if it would “work” with mammoths, but some of the megafauna we may’ve outcompete for resources rather than killed outright, no?
@Falconer & EJ
Was there something I missed with Yahtzee? I used to watch his videos when I was in college but fell off a few years ago due to starting to have real world adult commitments. I had been meaning to get back into them, unless there’s a reason I shouldn’t?
@zyvlyn
He’s a nasty transphobic #GamerGater (TW: Really gross transphobia).
Beyond Good & Evil.
Sure, it wasn’t a commercial success, but it certainly was a creative success.
@SFHC Wait, Yahtzee is a Gamergater? I thought he was neutral on the issue and only talked about issues concerning the movement in articles. Also, he apologized for it in an article called ”Bureaucracy ’em up”. I’m not really okay with his use of the phrase ”pantomime dames” either.
