Sarkeesian Effect Release IMMINENT! Possibly! [UPDATE: IT’S HERE]

hold onto your socks!
Hold onto your socks!

UPDATE: It’s out! I’m about to watch it! Let’s continue the discussion here.

So last night Jordan Owen made the announcement on Twitter:

sarkeesianeffct

Clearly, all didn’t go according to plan, because the video wasn’t released later that night. But apparently its release is IMMINENT.

Alas, it won’t be free on YouTube. It will cost $3.99 to rent on Vimeo, $7.99 to own.

I will keep refreshing this page until it appears, and then I will watch it so you don’t have to!

I’ll update this post as soon as it’s out. (Assuming I’m not napping.) And will follow it with a review, of sorts.

Feel free to post anything you hear in the comments below.

In other news, “street philosopher” Justine Tunney — one of the people Davis Aurini interviewed for the “film” — is pestering Owen on Twitter for no clear reason.

“Imminent”. Is that like how the Jehovah’s Witnesses have been claiming the Apocalypse is “imminent” (after several specifically-dated predictions failed to come to pass) since 1989 or so?

I anticipate solid revenues of $4.

This assumes, of course, that backers get a copy of the movie without additional outlay. If this assumption proves to be incorrect, I am going to laugh and laugh and laugh.

Still scamming the shit out of their suckers supporters, I see. Something tells me that Mr. DeMille here will never be ready for his close-up.

Also, dafuq is a “street philosopher”? Is it one of those tinfoil-hatted people who accost strangers on busy corners, rambling about aliens and anal probes, and scaring the bejeebers out of little kids?

Also, dafuq is a “street philosopher”?

In my experience it’s an unemployed hipster who hangs out on the sidewalk in a trendy neighborhood trying to engage passers-by with some kind of vague postmodern idea that’s invariably just warmed over anarchism, libertarianism, and/or Marxism.

That discussion on Twitter with Justine Tunney got… weirder.

I’m confused. Didn’t he already post it? Or was that the unfinished product? Why release a movie before you’ve done any post production? The whole point of post is to make the finished polished and fit for viewing? And why would anyone pay for the edited version when all the footage is already online?

The extent of my film and television industry knowledge comes from listening to DVD commentary tracks, and even I know this has been a fail every step of the way.

Yeah, I am curious to see if the Sarkeesian Effect’s backers will get a free copy of the documentary or if they’ll be expected to cough up more.

I’d probably bet on the latter.

A reference to “Which would you rather be; a contented cow or a discontented philosopher?” perhaps?

I’ve had a quite frankly unhealthy obsession with following this for a while – here’s what happened:

March this year: Owen/Aurini breaks up but then reconciles, hiring a moderator (a pornography director who is the husband of one of the interviewees in the film) to resolve any future disagreements amicably.
A couple of months ago: There is another disagreement and Owen/Aurini breaks up for good. They post multiple videos blaming each other, it is generally absolutely bloody hilarious.
A few days later: Amid the fighting, Aurini posts his version so far on Youtube. It is unfathomably dreadful (summary here: https://wehuntedthemammoth.com/2015/07/15/oh-glorious-day-davis-aurini-has-released-a-rough-draft-preview-of-the-sarkeesian-effect-team-aurini-version/comment-page-1/#comment-785383 ) Gamergate wallies/other donators react angrily, though some of them remain optimistic that this will somehow be excellent as long as they redo the narration, editing, dialogue and the film in general.
The end of July: Jordan worked with the footage he had to create his own version of The Sarkeesian Effect. He premiered it at a Gamergate meetup in Atlanta to a packed audience of nine.
From then on: Aurini teams up with Matt Forney to discredit Jordan, Thunderfoot pushes back on Aurini, Matt Forney starts talking about the death of Thunderfoot’s father (which is a low blow even by Matt Forney’s shockingly dismal standards), everyone continues fighting each other, Aurini is widely ridiculed by the rest of Gamergate and I have been unable to stop watching.
Today?: The Jordan version of the film is being released to a wider audience. The Aurini version is still to come, despite Aurini being very fast at editing and knowing all the keyboard shortcuts.

I was convinced, when this article came up in my e-mail inbox, that it was a mistake. “Strange,” I thought (totally my inner voice, mhm) “that mess was released a while ago, did Mr. Futrelle just accidentally post an unused article from the summer?”

How blind and foolish I was, not to have realized THERE IS STILL MORE OF THIS DRAMA ARE YOU KIDDING ME HOW MUCH LONGER BEFORE THESE WRETCHES FIGURE OUT THEY’VE BEEN HAD WHAT

What is the endgame here? Does Owen have so little respect for the people he’s been fleecing that he STILL, after a grand three squared souls showed up at the touted premier, thinks this mess can be anything but an embarrassment and a failure? Does he think it’s like women and comics, and if he just makes the…thing…he and other people have manufactured available online people will be more interested[end of analogy], and won’t care that it’s a piece of crap so long as it’s their piece of crap?

Also, why exactly is he using #notyourshield? That’s for all the non-white/Americans and women and queer folk who totally exist and want feminism/progressive thought to go away because reasons.

It was an astroturf op that springboarded from their idiotic belief that “SJWs” automatically defer to every member of an oppressed group because lib’rul hivemind, where cishet white male #Gits mass-registered Twitter socks all pretending to be black trans lesbians who supported #GamerGate. I’m not sure why he tagged his tweet with it; probably alerting the #Gits who haven’t given up on it.

As a bonus, we sometimes get trolls around here who pull the same nonsense. My favourite was a “Black man and proud #GamerGater” whose “Totally real photo” was a movie still of Denzel fucking Washington.

Daniel Ross

spacelawn: #NotYourShield was an adjunct tag to #GamerGate in the early months. Allegedly it was for women, trans people, racial minorities et. al. to stand with GamerGate and call out the “evil SJWs” for presuming to speak with them and using them as human shields for LIberal Ideology.

In practice, it soon became very obvious that:
1) #NotYourShield was very blatantly #OurShieldInstead and nobody who didn’t use the tags was fooled.
2) Most of the really hardcore #NotYourShield-ers were sock-puppets.
3) Most of the really hardcore GG-ers couldn’t keep the party line of being allied with the sort of people who were supposed to be using NYS and viciously turned on the real human members of that tag.

By the time GG was at its peak, NYS had died and most of the real human beings formerly involved in it were GG’s most hated enemies.

skiriki: Not to worry, he’s just about there – at least, his hand is, seen lying about on a table during one of the interviews due to the poor framing.

Also featured in the trailer: The first interview sounds like it has audio captured from two microphones a few milliseconds out of sync with each other, the second is bursting the microphone due to being too loud and the third is far too quiet. During Christina’s bit, there’s a really bad crossfade in the middle of her one sentence in order to make it appear that she’s saying something relevant. It ends with some new theme music that reminds me that I really wanted to get the Amiga out again one of these days.

I’m also tempted to pay the asking rental price because terrible people wasting their time and money is the sort of car-crash entertainment that I can really get into, but I wouldn’t want to be seen as supporting the project in any way.

Be careful if you watch the trailer on the Vimeo page! There are some cuts in there that are so jarring, I think they might need a seizure warning. I hope the rest of the movie isn’t like that.

I’m not willing to give them money, but I’m looking forward to David’s recap/review of it. I am also wondering if Owen’s release date has anything to do with the fact that Anita released a new Tropes v. Women video not too long ago.

Seriously!? He really thinks that she’s threatened by this shitshow. Somebody make the popcorn. This is going to be spectacular.

Also, it’s not like Anita’s new video ties into the one she posted a few weeks ago. I’m sure she just threw that together this morning when she found out the film was being released. /sarcasm

Why is the movie not free?! I thought they were doing this as a service to the public!

Don’t they realize their arch-enemy is giving her stuff away for gratis!? That is clearly part of her self-serving money-making diabolical master plan! You can’t compete with such obviously blatant manipulative deviousness by charging for your Oscar-winning expose of journalistic integrity!

Yes, I understand that the TRUTH is priceless so either you should charge accordingly (like $49.99 at least) or free to demonstrate the innate generosity of your movement and cause as a just counterpoint to the twin towers of evil that houses the watchful EYE of Anita.

To speak the truth you have to make the truth accessible mon!

Considering the absurd amount of money they got to make this windows-movie-maker-edited “documentary” it’s kinda messed up that one would have to pay for it.

Yeah, it’s worth remembering here that one of the stated objectives of the project – and one of the reasons they said they needed a decent chunk of money to get it done – was to end up with a polished, professional-quality film whose production values would outshine those of Sarkeesian’s videos. Like, if they could make something that looked and sounded better than what she makes, but for less than her ostensible budget, then that would help further the argument that Sarkeesian is a hack-y fraud. I haven’t watched the whole thing, but based on everything that’s come out so far, it feels like barely a single second of this thing was competently (let alone professionally) made. This thing is like the trainwreck that keeps on giving – The Giving Trainwreck, if you will.

Just as a heads up, that patronising bunch of broadcast meeja tosspots, who take my licencing fee are showing a shitely titled show called “Girls CAN code”. My wife’s spitting chips at the moment as all it’s doing is pandering to the short-brained shiteheads who have Women in STEM issues, five mins in and I have to agree that the language is overly patronising.

BUT WHAT ABOUT PROFESSOR SKULLYYYYY?

Well, we are all aware of the feud between the great houses of Aurini and Owen.

However, what we are not aware of is the forbidden romance between Professor Skull of House Aurini, and Tubithia, Owen’s porcelain companion and member of House Owen.

Jordan was made aware of the Professor’s secret meetings with his precious porcelain Tubithia, and thus forbade it from meeting with the skull ever again. Tubithia sobbed and asked for Jordan to reconsider, but Jordan refused.

Unfortunately for Jordan, Professor Skull has access to something his porcelain lover does not: hands. Hands with which to open doors.

So, late at night while Jordan is up working on his precious movie, Professor Skull summons his skeletal hands to open the doors separating him from his lover, and they canoodle in quiet secrecy…until Jordan needs the tub to film again.

It’s like Romeo and Juliet, except the main characters can’t die.

@Mike: That was some dude’s entry into a film festival for school or something. The reason why it’s kind of infamous now is that after he (obviously) lost, he blew up on Reddit and social media, saying he was screwed out of winning by SJWs and that every other film wasted time with a “message”.

Even GamerGate thinks his movie sucked.
