UPDATE: It’s out! I’m about to watch it! Let’s continue the discussion here.
So last night Jordan Owen made the announcement on Twitter:
Clearly, all didn’t go according to plan, because the video wasn’t released later that night. But apparently its release is IMMINENT.
Alas, it won’t be free on YouTube. It will cost $3.99 to rent on Vimeo, $7.99 to own.
I will keep refreshing this page until it appears, and then I will watch it so you don’t have to!
I’ll update this post as soon as it’s out. (Assuming I’m not napping.) And will follow it with a review, of sorts.
Feel free to post anything you hear in the comments below.
In other news, “street philosopher” Justine Tunney — one of the people Davis Aurini interviewed for the “film” — is pestering Owen on Twitter for no clear reason.

A frigging bunch of 3 year olds.
“Imminent”. Is that like how the Jehovah’s Witnesses have been claiming the Apocalypse is “imminent” (after several specifically-dated predictions failed to come to pass) since 1989 or so?
I anticipate solid revenues of $4.
This assumes, of course, that backers get a copy of the movie without additional outlay. If this assumption proves to be incorrect, I am going to laugh and laugh and laugh.
Still scamming the shit out of their
suckerssupporters, I see. Something tells me that Mr. DeMille here will never be ready for his close-up.Also, dafuq is a “street philosopher”? Is it one of those tinfoil-hatted people who accost strangers on busy corners, rambling about aliens and anal probes, and scaring the bejeebers out of little kids?
In my experience it’s an unemployed hipster who hangs out on the sidewalk in a trendy neighborhood trying to engage passers-by with some kind of vague postmodern idea that’s invariably just warmed over anarchism, libertarianism, and/or Marxism.
That discussion on Twitter with Justine Tunney got… weirder.
I’m confused. Didn’t he already post it? Or was that the unfinished product? Why release a movie before you’ve done any post production? The whole point of post is to make the finished polished and fit for viewing? And why would anyone pay for the edited version when all the footage is already online?
The extent of my film and television industry knowledge comes from listening to DVD commentary tracks, and even I know this has been a fail every step of the way.
@ WWTH
I heartily recommended “Adventures in the Screen Trade” for an insight into the film industry.
Sooo…what’s the picture of the happy heifer supposed to mean?
Yeah, I am curious to see if the Sarkeesian Effect’s backers will get a free copy of the documentary or if they’ll be expected to cough up more.
I’d probably bet on the latter.
@ kulurini
A reference to “Which would you rather be; a contented cow or a discontented philosopher?” perhaps?
I’ve had a quite frankly unhealthy obsession with following this for a while – here’s what happened:
March this year: Owen/Aurini breaks up but then reconciles, hiring a moderator (a pornography director who is the husband of one of the interviewees in the film) to resolve any future disagreements amicably.
A couple of months ago: There is another disagreement and Owen/Aurini breaks up for good. They post multiple videos blaming each other, it is generally absolutely bloody hilarious.
A few days later: Amid the fighting, Aurini posts his version so far on Youtube. It is unfathomably dreadful (summary here: https://www.wehuntedthemammoth.com/2015/07/15/oh-glorious-day-davis-aurini-has-released-a-rough-draft-preview-of-the-sarkeesian-effect-team-aurini-version/comment-page-1/#comment-785383 ) Gamergate wallies/other donators react angrily, though some of them remain optimistic that this will somehow be excellent as long as they redo the narration, editing, dialogue and the film in general.
The end of July: Jordan worked with the footage he had to create his own version of The Sarkeesian Effect. He premiered it at a Gamergate meetup in Atlanta to a packed audience of nine.
From then on: Aurini teams up with Matt Forney to discredit Jordan, Thunderfoot pushes back on Aurini, Matt Forney starts talking about the death of Thunderfoot’s father (which is a low blow even by Matt Forney’s shockingly dismal standards), everyone continues fighting each other, Aurini is widely ridiculed by the rest of Gamergate and I have been unable to stop watching.
Today?: The Jordan version of the film is being released to a wider audience. The Aurini version is still to come, despite Aurini being very fast at editing and knowing all the keyboard shortcuts.
The rain in Spain is sky.
That sentence made just as much sense as Tunney’s Twitter response above.
That Justine Tunny tweet just makes me think of Newman and Baddiel’s old History Today sketches.
Christ, I thought I recognized Tunney.
Isn’t she that trans person who spent days defending Milo’s fucking transphobia?
Can I rent-to-own? I’m a little short on cash right now. 😉
I was convinced, when this article came up in my e-mail inbox, that it was a mistake. “Strange,” I thought (totally my inner voice, mhm) “that mess was released a while ago, did Mr. Futrelle just accidentally post an unused article from the summer?”
How blind and foolish I was, not to have realized THERE IS STILL MORE OF THIS DRAMA ARE YOU KIDDING ME HOW MUCH LONGER BEFORE THESE WRETCHES FIGURE OUT THEY’VE BEEN HAD WHAT
What is the endgame here? Does Owen have so little respect for the people he’s been fleecing that he STILL, after a grand three squared souls showed up at the touted premier, thinks this mess can be anything but an embarrassment and a failure? Does he think it’s like women and comics, and if he just makes the…thing…he and other people have manufactured available online people will be more interested[end of analogy], and won’t care that it’s a piece of crap so long as it’s their piece of crap?
Also, why exactly is he using #notyourshield? That’s for all the non-white/Americans and women and queer folk who totally exist and want feminism/progressive thought to go away because reasons.
Wasn’t she previously a street intellectual? Is that a promotion?

So i forgot what it was all about so i ask, what do they mean with #notyourshield? It’s some bullshit im sure.
@spacelawn
It was an astroturf op that springboarded from their idiotic belief that “SJWs” automatically defer to every member of an oppressed group because lib’rul hivemind, where cishet white male #Gits mass-registered Twitter socks all pretending to be black trans lesbians who supported #GamerGate. I’m not sure why he tagged his tweet with it; probably alerting the #Gits who haven’t given up on it.
As a bonus, we sometimes get trolls around here who pull the same nonsense. My favourite was a “Black man and proud #GamerGater” whose “Totally real photo” was a movie still of Denzel fucking Washington.
spacelawn: #NotYourShield was an adjunct tag to #GamerGate in the early months. Allegedly it was for women, trans people, racial minorities et. al. to stand with GamerGate and call out the “evil SJWs” for presuming to speak with them and using them as human shields for LIberal Ideology.
In practice, it soon became very obvious that:
1) #NotYourShield was very blatantly #OurShieldInstead and nobody who didn’t use the tags was fooled.
2) Most of the really hardcore #NotYourShield-ers were sock-puppets.
3) Most of the really hardcore GG-ers couldn’t keep the party line of being allied with the sort of people who were supposed to be using NYS and viciously turned on the real human members of that tag.
By the time GG was at its peak, NYS had died and most of the real human beings formerly involved in it were GG’s most hated enemies.
It’s up! FYI, your link in the article doesn’t work – you’re only searching normal videos, you need to be searching On Demand videos: https://vimeo.com/search/ondemand?q=sarkeesian+effect
Tunney’s the one who launched that petition to get Google execs to run the country. The ex-Occupy enthusiast who then started endorsing neoreactionary thought.
This seems cheaper than Aurini’s mess, at least?
I’m pleased to see the sad empty pizza box returns for its star appearance – starting from the very first frame of the first clip in the trailer 😀
