Happy Marriage Equality Day!

You meow kiss the bride. The other bride.
You meow kiss the bride. The other bride.

We’re taking a day off from the regular nonsense to celebrate marriage equality, which is now a thing in all states here in the USA.

Not to be a dick, but Dred Scot was overruled by the Civil War Amendments, not by the SCOTUS.

There’s definitely been issues especially in the past but also currently of feminists not always being inclusive to lesbians and trans women. But I’ve never actually seen a group of feminists organizing against marriage equality. I haven’t seen feminists be anything but celebratory today.

What planet does Dean actually live on?

Well, to be fair, I did see some “radical lesbian” TERFy types on the Book of Face, pissing and moaning about this today, but then…they WOULD. Because reasons! (And their “reasons” probably look strangely like Deano’s, when all’s said…)

Anyhow, I’m too pleased for all my US-based LGBT+ friends who’ve been directly affected, and afflicted, by marriage INequality in the past, to care what a bunch of Sour Patch Kids say, so I’m just gonna crank some loud happy corny music and party with the funner folks now.

(With the full knowledge that there are plenty of fights still to come.)

I knew someone who claimed there was a pretty good argument that Dubya was the anti-christ. Pretending to be all Christian, getting people to follow him, starting wars and bringing chaos to the world while insisting his was the one true way and the chaos was for the good of the world…

It was actually a fairly convincing case, in an Omen III sort of way.

President Andrew Jackson is probably the most famous instance of other branches pointing out they could just ignore the Supreme Court.

Following the ruling in Worcester v. Georgia

The famous, likely apocryphal quote: “John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it!”

What he’s known to have said: “…the decision of the Supreme Court has fell still born, and they find that they cannot coerce Georgia to yield to its mandate,”

There are different attitudes towards marriage within the LGBT community. On one end of the spectrum you have people who want to get married to a lifelong partner, maybe raise a family too. In the middle you have people who think that marriage is a good thing, but not essential to their lives; people who think that prioritizing marriage over things like ENDA (employment non-discrimination act) was a mistake; people who don’t want to get married; and people who think marriage is problematic, but that in a flawed system it’s good if it’s available to everyone (this is not intended to be an ordered list, just some of the attitudes out there).

Then, on the far end of the spectrum, you have people who think that same-sex couples getting married is a capitulation to heteronormativity, destroys the value of queerness as something culturally separate from straightness, is actively oppressive, and reinforces the subjugation of women by granting additional support to a fundamentally and inherently harmful institution.

If you’re cis and straight and see LGBT people engaging in this sort of conversation, it’s best to stay out of it as most of us who are somewhere in the LGBT community consider this to be an internal conversation and don’t want people from outside arguing with us about it even if you agree with them.

I know. Equal rights are “heteronormative”, or some such. They say the same things about trans people. I can’t even.

(North Korea? This I gotta Snopes. Official Wikipedia entry for the song says nada about NK. Sounds apocryphal to me.)

This is wonderful news. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been so genuinely yet pleasantly surprised by a political decision. With all the conservative anti-gay fundie assholes holding back progress in the US of A, I didn’t think we’d see this for a long time. Then, suddenly… BAM!

Congratulations, America! I’m so happy for y’all!

I guess that’s the thing– after the grisly news of last week I am trying to be unreservedly happy about this but I can’t shake the feeling that some kind of nasty backlash is going to erupt like a shit geyser.

Which pisses me off, because this is unabashedly a Good Thing.

Yeah, it’s hard to be really, truly happy when there’s still so much shit going on.

And it’s hard to be really, truly happy when you know what kind of bigots are lurking in the wings.

In Denmark we had same sex marriage for a long time. Jesus hasn’t returned. Deal with it MRAs, fundies and Stormlanders.

Yeah, but Jesus didn’t come then because you weren’t special enough! The bible-humping religious right over here believes that they’re going to be the ones who get to meet Jesus and tell him what wonderful people they are and how wicked and evil the people they persecuted were, and how they deserved it!

And then Jesus will look at them and say, “Didn’t I tell you fucks to love and care for thy neighbor and not to judge one another? I didn’t fucking stutter.”

I have friends (two women) who married in Canada, then moved to Vermont and got married there and are now expecting a baby. I am so happy for them that their marriage will now be recognized in any state. I have friends (also two women) who adopted a baby–but only in the name of one of the women, because gay relationships are not recognized here. I wonder if or how this ruling will affect their lives. I have gay friends with no interest at all in marriage.I have friends who married in my state in a brief window of opportunity before an appeals court struck down the right of gays in my state to marry. They are now married in the eyes of the law everywhere. I am very happy about this ruling, was hoping so hard for it! It was a great day.

Either way, it’s an ironic song. That’s why it’s sung in a very force, stress tone.

I got so many messages from friends this morning telling me about the good news. But all I could think about was how I would have to go to work with my homophobic co-worker who has said out loud, on more than one occasion, that America will go to shit if Obama lets gay marriage become legal.

Let’s just say that I was a little keyed up when I go there, just waiting for her to say something bigoted. And when she said that turning tradition on it’s head and letting gay people get married is what ended Rome (because of COURSE she had to fucking say something) I may have told her that is an obscenely stupid thing to say and that no one who knows anything about Roman civilization would believe that, so unless she’s done a substantial amount of research she has no leg to stand on.

…of course, I wish I could have been more suave about my rebuttal. I’ve been so twitchy lately. I’m pansexual and strange and constantly question my gender. It makes life hard, and living in small town Wisconsin with coworkers like that one makes life hell. Who am I and why am I even here when I’m just a constant wrench in everyone’s gears?

I’m always happy to have one more block in the foundation of the Equality Castle, but we don’t even have walls yet and people are always storming the trenches.

The only legitimate critiques of today’s events (and Marriage Equality in general) from an intersectional feminist perspective that *I* can fathom are along the lines of “this isn’t nearly enough, a tiny band-aid on a gaping wound applied more slowly than should be acceptable in any version of reality”

I suppose you might call that a case of praising with faint damns?

“I can’t wait to hear the all the fundie preachers who threaten God’s wrath on the united states if gay marriage happened try to explain where the hordes of locusts are.” – skybison

Easy! Following the ruling, all the locusts got gay-married, so no more baby locusts! 😉
Congrats to LGBT (and indeed all non-bigot) Americans!

I actually knew a guy in the early 2000s who thought Silvio Berlusconi was a strong canidate for the anti-christ. Which too be fair, satanic powers was the only explanation for how he was able to run Italy for so long.

Of all the futurist interpretations of Revelation, this has to be the most plausible. 😀

I know. Equal rights are “heteronormative”, or some such. They say the same things about trans people. I can’t even.

Does their case have to do with marriage being a bourgeois institution that used to marginalise LG and now seeks to impose its norms on it?

I’m impressed to see that the WBC have decided to rationalize this as a victory for them. Now if they would just stay away from people’s funerals and do their hating in their own space. Did you all hear about how Anonymous decided to target the WBC after they announced plans to picket the funerals of the Charleston church massacre?

And congratulations USA over gay marriage.

@sn0rkmaiden:

I’m impressed to see that the WBC have decided to rationalize this as a victory for them.

In a certain light it is a victory for them.

Extremist groups tend to thrive when the mainstream they split off from feels under threat. Many of today’s American extremist Christian groups – Quiverfull, the Joshua Generation, Westboro Baptist, FCLDS – originated with more mainstream churches who felt alarmed at their loss of control over society and with the growth of secularism, and particularly with their inability to prevent women controlling their own reproduction. Faced with the choice of moderating their views or fleeing to more extremist groups, many people chose the latter.

The same is likely to happen now. Extremist groups may see their ranks swell as they provide a safe haven for homophobes, and more moderate groups may find themselves in the dilemma of either catering to the homophobes (and thus rejecting mainstream society and drifting to the extremes) or losing their membership (and thus becoming irrelevant and no longer being able to control the political narrative.)

The ideals of the fringe groups have been defeated, yes. But the memberships of those groups may swell. To any extremist leader who cares more about the latter than the former, this represents a victory.

Thank you, to everyone who explained the legal-ese side of this to me patiently. It’s so great to hear the chances of this being undone anytime soon are slim-to-none.

Now I just wish I could lure my Mom back from the Dark Side. She’s a Baptist, and while she’s not the hate-spewing Westboro-type, she is, by definition, bigoted. I understand it’s her faith and she’s just trying to do what she believes God has instructed, but it’s still bigotry to believe another human being deserves less basic human rights than oneself, even if God agrees with the view. If God truly believes this, then by definition, He’s a bigot!

Her church has a saying to help the members to not feel guilty over those views. They say, “We love the sinner; we hate the sin.” But that’s the problem right there! To call someone’s love a “sin”? To believe that that person deserves ETERNAL TORMENT IN HELL for being who they were born to be, who God Himself (if you believe in that stuff) MADE them to be?? That’s bigotry, that’s hypocrisy, that’s…just simply a relic, an outdated way of thinking that needs to go extinct along with the MRA beliefs.

I don’t believe in God, personally, but I can still recognize that NATURE is what made a homosexual person gay, and asking them to live a life without love and companionship and marriage is unfair. Everytime I hear a Pastor or some conservative saying being gay is a “lifestyle choice”? Wow, what willful ignorance!

My daughter is 7yo and I just want her to inherit a world where we’ve already dealt with this bullshit and moved passed it. Like Kurt Vonnegut said about the millions yet-to-be-born: “I suppose they will all want dignity.”
