MRA Dean Esmay elevates the discourse with new #SpankAFeminist hashtag, gratuitous rape references

Dean Esmay
Dean Esmay wants you to know that you’re a cruel bitter bitchy hatemongering bigot harpy who needs to be spanked, metaphorically.

Dean Esmay, the Chief Operations Officer (whatever that is) of A Voice for Men, has scored a major public relations coup for the Men’s Rights movement with his aggressive promotion of an exciting new Twitter hashtag, #SpankAFeminist.

In what I can only assume is an attempt to convince the world that MRAs do indeed spend a good portion of their days fantasizing about doing physical harm to feminists, Esmay explains in a post on AVFM that the hashtag is necessary “because it’s finally time to put abusive liars over the knee.”

In case you’re wondering, when he refers to “abusive liars” he means feminists and not, you know, people who think that publicly fantasizing about spanking feminists is 1) hilarious and 2) some kind of actual activism on the behalf of men.

Esmay is quick to assure his readers that he is only referring to metaphorical spankings over metaphorical knees.

As he sees it, feminists are pretty much all just begging to be spanked (metaphorically).

Why would you spank a feminist? Well in reality, we know a lot of them would complain but some might actually enjoy it. Who knows? Maybe they’re just shit-testing us all and waiting and feeling frustrated that we aren’t responding right.

Evidently, in Esmayland, when women challenge their male partners with so-called “shit tests” it’s because deep down they want to be physically assaulted.

Also, feminists are a bunch of meanies, anyway.

[A]ny time you meet a feminist, you should spank him or her until they cry. And do it every time they open their mouths to spew forth their hateful lies about standing for tolerance, inclusion, and equality, when there is no movement in the modern world that does more to fight against tolerance, inclusion, freedom, and equality than feminism. Not even real life fascists or communists can top them at this point.

Feminism is an intolerant, hateful, racist, anti-gay, misandrist, misogynist, gynocentric religion and hate movement.

Yep, that’s right: In Esmayland, feminists are actually worse than real Nazis.

So how is the spanking going so far? Here are a few of Esmay’s contributions to the hashtag. As always, he is a master of subtlety. CONTENT WARNING for terrible rape references. Also a WAIT, WHAT? WARNING for some of the nonsensiest nonsense I think I’ve ever seen.

You may have noticed that Esmay favors some rather colorful descriptions of feminists and feminism. Here are a few others he’s used in the hashtag over the last day or so.

  • Bitter bitchy harpies
  • Cruel violent abusive harpies
  • Hatemongering cultist[s]
  • Misandrist bigot[s]
  • Bigots and bullies
  • Hateful feminist bigot and bully
  • Bigot feminists

It’s weird that someone who complains so much about alleged feminist “bigotry” is fine with publishing articles written by a literal Holocaust denier.

Also, given how evil we feminists are, it seems a bit strange that Esmay tried to friend me on LinkedIn the other day.

Dean Esmay, man of many surprises.

While Esmay’s tweets seem to make up roughly half of the #SpankAFeminist hashtag, a handful of other terrible people have enlisted in Esmay’s (metaphorical) spanking crusade. Here are some of the most charming of the bunch, and when I say “charming” I mean CONTENT WARNING for gratuitous rape references, violent gifs, and Dan Perrins being Dan Perrins. (I’ve omitted the assorted porn pictures the #SpankAFeminist folks have posted.)

Another from Esmay:

It probably is safe to assume any feminist lecturing about consent is a rapist. No one else needs that much explaining #SpankAFeminist

How does this even make sense? No one assumes that someone explaining the definition of murder is a murderer. If anything the people who are trying to obscure the meaning of consent are more likely to be rapists.

I haven’t enough “wait…wuts” to “wait…wut?” this enough. I’ll check back tomorrow, maybe I’ll have some “wait…wuts” to give this Esmay character a proper “wait…wut?”

Maybe a new Twitter trend should be: #waitwut?

epitome of incomprehensibility

@Snuffy – whaaaat?

That makes about as much sense as “It probably is safe to assume any high school math teacher lecturing about trigonometry is secretly a triangle.”

@acer – I realize it reads like that, but I assure this is fairly normal for Esmay. Many, many of his tweets read like someone was playing some sort of thesaurus roulette when they make that much sense.

@Snuffy:

That… doesn’t make sense. “No one else needs that much explaining?” Is the hypothetical feminist explaining consent to themselves? Even ignoring that bit of fumbling, is a feminist likely a rapist if they do *any* explaining about consent? Is *any* explanation too much?

But yes, some people do need lots of explaining. And in the case of those people who seem to be willfully trying to misunderstand the explanation (or try to find all the tiny little corner cases where a simplified explanation doesn’t seem to hold to try to disprove it at all), they are in all probability a rapist (or are likely to become one).

@Paradoxical:

There’s a school of thought which holds that the proper term for a female dominant should be “dom” rather than “domme”, since it’s a contraction of “dominatrix.” However, your usage is certainly the popular one.

The reason I personally adhere to it is because it’s easier to tell the preferred gender of the dominant in question in text. : P

It’s not easy to infer if you’re referring to a “dominant” or a “dominatrix” if you just use the word “dom” without some other contextual clues.

And like I said, I think it stems from French.

On a slightly related tangent, the most recent “Last Week Tonight” had a look at online harassment against women, which had a 10 second clip of Anita Sarkeesian, and the dudebros are maaaaaad.

Mostly what I see is “Okay, revenge porn is a problem, but WHY DO YOU HAVE SARKEESIAN AND WU IN THERE?! THEY’RE EVIL! PROFESSIONAL VICTIMS!

With a dose of “Anita’s a scam artist! Wu sent those threats to herself! Reddit proved they’re both liars!”

At least they’re admitting that Wu and Sarkeesian are victims, though they seem to have missed the bit where Oliver talked to a woman who literally said “Ignoring harassment doesn’t work”, and where Oliver followed up with “You can’t just unplug your computer and walk away and pretend it isn’t happening, because that’s impractical.”

The dom/domme thing is something that gets debated from time to time. I know a lot of female dominants who dislike domme because it was created quite recently (like within the last 10-15 years online) just to gender dominants while there is no parallel for submissives. Far from a universal opinion however and plenty of dominants embrace being called dommes. It’s also entirely fake french which is another objection some have to it.

Actually I think Esmay is correct that consent is really not that complicated. However, since all forms of sexual assault are so common, and many offenders use “confusion” as a defense, I fail to see the harm in defining consent. I also support moving from “everything short of a loud verbal no is a yes” to “everything short of an enthusiastic yes is a no” standard for sexual assault so these cowards have no shred of cover.

(Quebec anglophone with second-language French here)

Yes, doubling the consonant and adding E is a common French feminine ending, though usually used more for L and N than for M. Also, many French masculine words end a similar way, such as “homme,” which means “man,” so life is confusing 🙂

@epitome of incomprehensibility Yeah, language is weird. Basically domme was created by adding “me” to the end of “dom” to make it look like it’s feminine french but really isn’t because it isn’t actually derived from a french word.

As Chief Operations Officer I’m responsible for HR, OSHA CERT, APR, hiring, firing, vendor management, customer relations and a slew of other things.

It seems the role of COO at AVFM consists of being a whiny douchebag on twitter who is trying to convince everyone he’s a dom but is not fooling anyone. >.<

Their ‘no really means yes’ fantasies are what always gives them away. And I love how everything they talk about has to come back to sex. It’s so damn obvious that it’s all about sex and their inability to find someone who will, or force someone to, have sex with them.

Honestly, who the hell is raising these men?

With a dose of “Anita’s a scam artist! Wu sent those threats to herself! Reddit proved they’re both liars!”

“I agree with you, but…(insert heinous comment here)” really is becoming a common thing these days.

Do these people ever get how self-contradictory their statements are? It’s like when they throw around “ethics in gaming journalism” and then complain about critics expressing opinions they dislike, to the point where they’ll talk about doing a boycott of the site it’s on. Which just proves they don’t give a shit about journalistic ethics.

Oh, they’ll just come up with some convenient re-definition of “harassment” and make it out that they’re just “critiquing” – because they think words can be whatever they want them to mean whenever they want, and others must accept that. Nevermind that isn’t how language works…

Apparently you haven’t been watching the manosphere as much as we have. Trust me when I say, he means every word of the nonsense he spouts. As much as we don’t want to believe it either. (Really, I wish these guys were Poes.)

It’s just, we need to figure out what most of it means. We get the “spanking feminists” part, and we get why he’s trying to cover his ass (pun intended) with the hasty tack-on “metaphorically!” bit, but some of this stuff is word salad.
