If your reaction to Reddit’s banning of FatPeopleHate was “we’re next,” please examine your choices in life

next-back-sign

As most of you are no doubt aware, Reddit recently banned the incredibly shitty FatPeopleHate subreddit for harassment. Naturally, members of Reddit’s many other incredibly shitty subreddits — including KotakuInAction, the main GamerGate hangout on Reddit, and of course the Men’s Rights subreddit — are afraid they’ll be next!

“The new age of reddit has begun,” wrote one worried Men’s Rightser. “Admins ban /r/FatPeopleHate (and 4 other subreddits that the admins fail to disclose) for “harassment”. It is only a matter of time before this subreddit gets banned too.”

Meanwhile, in KotakuInAction, a “megathread” about the bans has garnered more than 1100 upvotes and inspired nearly 500 comments.

In that thread, one KiAer has helpfully provided a list of the subreddits Reddit has shut down in recent days. As you can see, most were variants on FatPeopleHate, hastily created in an attempt to get around the ban of the original FatPeopleHate (or just to annoy the site admins); others were offensive in other predictable ways. I’ve highlighted some of the more, er, interesting of the bunch.

My point here?

If you look at a list like the one above and think “oh, no, my favorite subreddit will be next,” then maybe, just maybe, there is something terribly wrong with your favorite subreddit, and probably with you as well.

Men’s Rights: the only self-proclaimed “civil rights” movement outside of literal Nazis that puts itself in the same category as “/r/fatn*ggerhate” and “/r/transf*ggots.”

NOTE TO READERS: My strep throat is better but not gone, and I also have other non-blog things I need to tend to this week, so posting will probably continue to be a bit light.

quietwolf,
I’m listening to NoSleep right now. (Every Sunday) I like the Black Tapes and Night Vale and Tales to Terrify too. (I miss Lawrence.) I wouldn’t visit any of their Reddits (if they have them) and I wish they’d do the ethical thing and get off Reddit entirely.

Comparing encouraging hating me for my body to mocking misogyny is a shitty, stupid thing to write. Fatphobia is like pointing out the hideousness and the destructive effects of gender based hate and oppression? WTF?
Really? I’m just like a hateful bigot that encourages abuse and harassment because of the shape and size of my body? Fuck that noise. Examine your own biases.

mysogyny is a decision to harm people for no good reason. Being fat is what my body is like, and in my case, not even choice, I eat healthier than most people and even when I was anorexic I was “fat”. Being fat is like having asthma to me; it is a health condition I treat every day. My asthma doesnr hurt anyone else, and neither does my body size. If I actually had a choice I would not choose to be fat. Every single day I reject delicious foods like pasta because I dont want to be fat, foods I watch skinny people eat whenever they want. Being fat has NO relation to actively hating and bullying people just for being born with a vagina, which is roughly 51% of all people (not forgetting trans ppl as I am one but bigots dont respect our identities). Fat people get mocked regularly our whole lives, fat people generally dont get starring roles in films, and so on. Mysogyny and sexism is so systematic that women have only had the vote in the US for less than 100 years and feminism is still a dirty word. Big big difference. No pun intended.

“But, in the American South and even other parts of N. America (I’ve seen the Confederate flag a few times all the way up here in MN) there’s still nostalgia for the Antebellum South. People still claim the Confederate flag is heritage not hate. They still deny that the Confederacy started the war and they still deny that it was primarily about defending the “right” to enslave a race of people.”

– which is total bullsht when there are confed flags in MN and Michigan, which sure as shit aint their heritage.

…Why shouldnt it be illegal? Maybe because we dont really need more white supremacists in jail, idk.

but it should NOT be flying from the damn state capitol!

Also, along with everything else already mentioned, fatphobia and misogyny are intertwined. Slightly overweight women get vile hate and international abuse where obese men get Hollywood deals.

Drunktroller, you can take your holier-than-thou false equivalences and harassment apologia and “Intolerance of intolerance is the same as intolerance itself!” wrapped in “I’m not a bigot, but…” and stick them up your ass. Right up your ass. As far as you can reach. Almost there. Keep going.

@KL: But…but….but…being overweight/not conventionally pretty/having tattoos/having short hair/being older than 22/not having big bewbies/not being white makes their boners so very sad–it’s just as bad as racism and misogyny. In fact, it takes away their rights because we’re here to make boners happy, not make them sad. Misandry!!

I realize that may have been unnecessarily economically/career-based, but the work/life intersection’s how we’re so often judged – and judge ourselves.

At work “too much” and we beat ourselves up over missing our kids’ childhoods. Not working outside the home and we flaggelate ourselves for not contributing economically.

I just wanted to put it out there that you’re awesome as long as you’re Dadding with love.

The whole tolerate my intolerance seems far more like the absurdist straw relativism people invent to fight.

A better way to view relativism is that you need to defend your values and morals and cannot claim some authority has the right answer without explanation. Too many people use their god or holy book as an alibi for their biases. Understanding the context and the usefulness of a value system helps us understand each other’s morality and gives us a framework to discuss differences and make choices amongst pluralistic peoples.

The so-called paradox of freedom is the argument that freedom in the sense of absence of any constraining control must lead to very great restraint, since it makes the bully free to enslave the meek. The idea is, in a slightly different form, and with very different tendency, clearly expressed in Plato.
Less well known is the paradox of tolerance: Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. — In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law, and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal.

Karl Popper said it best.

Now I’m imagining Dean Esmay spanking David Futrelle, and…

Well, it’s kind of arousing in a very weird way.

(That wasn’t intended to be a slur on David or a homophobic reference. I was merely tickled by the fact that Esmay is presumably assuming that by “feminist” everyone understands “female feminist”, and so imagines it as being an archetypal man-spanking-woman image. Once you widen feminism out to the full field of those of us who believe in it, the mental images get a lot more weird, which I don’t think Esmay intended at all.)

Yeah, let’s trend sexually assaulting feminists on twitter! Because those gross ass MRAs view us as needing “punishment” because they fantasize about molesting young girls.

GROSS GROSS GROSS GROSS. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

#SpankAFeminist? I don’t want to know what that’s about probably harassing feminists like they always do.

Reddit hasn’t really changed its philosophy or policies on offensive content. The way it’s supposed to work is that you unsubscribe from a subreddit if you find offensive content or you’re being harassed by other users within the subreddit (of course, this is idealized and not how the real world actually works). The staff admins historically trusted mods to remove illegal content from NSFW subreddits rather than outright banning porn and hate speech.

All the new policy really means is that Reddit admins will ban subreddits if the mods fail to prevent off-subreddit harassment. It won’t actually deal with hate speech on Reddit at least as long as the mods have plausible deniability.

… Wait, if the rules are specifically regarding harassment, then why hasn’t the MRA subreddit been shut down? They’re loud and proud about their doxxing, vote brigading, PM spamming, hostile takeovers of subreddits that used to be feminist…

The fact that other beyond fucking awful subs are still allowed limits my satisfaction with this, but one step at a time, I guess…
