Happy birthday WWTH – and congratulations, Scalyllama ๐ I know that men can be awful to women while somehow thinking their advances are in any way welcome, and I obviously have little experience brushing them off, but… remember you owe them nothing, not even attention.
Here’s something I’ve wanted to ask about for a while – since discovering this community I’ve begun to think more about using the word ‘crazy’ and related words more carefully than I used to. I’d never even thought of them being insults to those with mental difficulties (I’m on antidepressants myself) until I saw people here who didn’t like their use, so I’m trying to change my vocabulary.
I’m doing a video series just now about Apogee’s DOS games in the 90s (remember them?) and at one point I describe a game as “absolutely mental”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9CS1SdMx8s#t=4m50s (4m50s) . Can I ask for suggestions for a better word I should have used? Because frankly when confronted with talking coconut-hurling monkeys and cows that shoot laser beams I’m a bit lost for words.

Oh, and as for dancing – when asked to ‘dance’ on a dancefloor I just move my arms about a bit awkwardly, but growing up in Scotland made me well-versed in ceilidh dancing ๐ It has prescribed moves, nothing to really worry about, and served as a fantastic way to meet up with girls when I was younger despite my social failings in almost all other respects.
@WWTH Happy Birthday!!! If I knew how to upload sounds files, I would sing the Futurama birthday song for you ๐
Other lovely Mammotheers: thank you for your advice and support! I’d prefer to keep myself “nice” and punching people in the face isn’t usually considered so.
Fortunately I tend to wander around in my own thoughts in public – typical introvert protective behaviour – so you have to almost bump into me before I notice you.

“Zany”, “eccentric”, “wacky”, “unconventional”, “silly”, “far out”, “way out”, “off the wall” to say a few.
In Australia, we have a phrase “mental as anything”, which is usually used in fond awe for someone who has a neck or nothing approach to life. It’s not an insult here. There’s even a band with that name – they did great music in the 80s and early 90s.
If you all missed it, Mallory Ortberg wrote a three part saga about a teensy stray kitten that found his way into her yard (and into her friend’s home):

I think it’s those trees from Game of Thrones which I don’t know the name of off hand because I haven’t seen an episode in forever and never read the books. I want to say ironwood, but I think I’m thinking of the Tell-Tale Game.
So I feel bad even bringing this up, but has anyone else been kinda unimpressed with Anita Sarkeesian lately? First she had that article about feminism not being about choice:
I mean, I get where she’s coming from, but she sure seems willing to imperiously decide what feminism is about and to write off anyone with a different view.
The first article linked isn’t by Anita Sarkeesian and doesn’t mention her. Was it a different article you were thinking of? If so, please post – I’d love to read it!

The first article isn’t by Antia, it’s by Megan Tyler. Anita isn’t mentioned in it.
And I can understand why she wouldn’t see Mad Max as feminist. Glorified violence is more of a patriarchy, especially in societies that glorify military and strength. The movie is written around action scenes and violence on the path to freedom and happens to have some feminist themes. There’s other, non-violent ways to gain one’s freedom, which is preferable.
That being said, I don’t agree with her that it’s not feminist, even if it is violent. We should be able to have feminist movies that have violence and feminist movies without it and in any genre. There are very few ways to not feminist right and violent movies aren’t one of them (at least in the sense that violent movies don’t orbit around violence solely against women).
I think it’s because Anita’s a pacifist that she says it’s not feminist; she always discusses in her videos on nonviolent ways video characters can resolve issues.

@katz, I agree with that critique of “choice feminism.” It’s a specific thing; a sort of liberal, consumerist version of feminism which is light on the whole Challenging Patriarchy thing. A shallow pseudo-feminism that doesn’t critique society and doesn’t seek to change it. As long as women have, or appear to have, “choices,” that’s celebrated as freedom. And god help you if you suggest that maybe a woman has made a wrong choice (by joining a patriarchal Christian group, for example. Yes, I’ve been chided for criticizing a woman who said she was happy her husband made all the decisions, because HER CHOICE.)
I disagree that violent movies are inherently anti-feminist, and I enjoyed Mad Max, so there obviously SHE’S JUST WRONG. ๐
Last few days have been good. A friend of mine turned 30 the day before I turned 23 and then the day after (today) another good friend turned 25.
… And now I’m holding a private awkward dance party for one in the station’s living room while the other live in is out, swinging to my birthday present to myself (a long overdue CD player and a couple big-band CDs).
I’m resting during Little Brown Jug right now.
Love you all. My friends are awesome, and you all are awesome too.
Birthdays all over the place! Glad you stuck around the world another year, and may this year be even better than all years before it.

Yeah, but that was sort of the point. The culture glorified violence. The men were brutal tools, desperate to prove their heroism and make names for themselves and feast with the heroes in Valhalla when they died. The film shows the appeal of that but also its consequences. The question asked of those men was: “WHO KILLED THE WORLD?”
(Answer: they did, or men like them with attitudes like theirs.)
