Hey, remember that Reed College student who somehow got national attention for being booted from a class discussion section because he wouldn’t shut up about rape? The guy that right-wing news outlets — including The National Review and the New York Post — heralded as a martyr to free speech, even though it was clear to anyone who looked into the story even a little bit that the guy in question was a bit … off?
Well, Katie Baker at Buzzfeed now reports that Mr. True, now an ex-Reed College student, “was arrested on Thursday by the Portland, Oregon police for alleged sex abuse, harassment, and disorderly conduct” after, er, behaving inappropriately at a girls’ rugby game.
As Baker explains,
According to an employee at Rugby Oregon, a youth rugby organization based in Portland, True was arrested for disrupting a high school girls’ rugby practice. He was restrained by a coach who called the police, the employee said.
I wonder if the New York Post will be writing an editorial this time, like they did last time, demanding Congressional hearings and declaring that, well, whatever it was he was doing at the rugby game was a bold act of self-expression.

HA. HA. HA.
I am totally unsurprised by this. Although I can’t help nyaah nyaahing his right-wing supporters, I feel sorry for this guy. My mother was a psych professor and a few years ago had a young man in one of his classes who had an apparent psychotic break in mid-semester. Her descriptions of his behavior in class and on assignments was uncannily similar to descriptions of True and to his writings online; he wasn’t rape obsessed, but perseverated on sex in a very creepy way and disrupted class discussions and, frankly, scared everyone around him. Her student ended up taking a voluntary leave from school and, I hope, got help and was able to put his life back together; hopefully True can do the same, assuming that his issues are similar.
And on the other hand if he’s just a weird angry butthole, hopefully his experiences with the justice system will discourage him from harassing anyone else!
” He was restrained by a coach who called the police, the employee said.”
This is good, because it doesn’t really offer any room for his supporters to claim it was a set-up or a UVA-style incident or similar.
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer NiceGuy. I’m glad the authorities have him.
@Thalia
I’m not comfortable making any kind of parallel between this guy and the guy in your mom’s class. Mental health issues are unrelated to the kind of entitlement problems that are at the root of this kind of behavior. In other words, he might have mental health problems, or he might not, we don’t know either way, and it wouldn’t matter if we did because the two characteristics (mental health and entitlement) are unconnected.
Look at that smarmy ass being greedy with those zoo birds.
I’ve been to the Portland Zoo a few times. I’ve only held one bird on my arm, at most. But the bird really liked it there and kept drinking the nectar. Others with me were wondering what was taking me so long and even worried the bird would poop on me. It didn’t though.
Shocking. Not.
Well, I can think of one mental disorder that would be particularly associated with entitlement: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (Elliot Rodger’s writings leave me inclined to think there is no way he didn’t have it, for instance). But that’s only one, and as far as I’m aware, personality disorders aren’t actually classified as mental illnesses per se. They’re certainly not the psychoses that a lot of people try to blame this shit on.
I don’t know if these particular creepers would qualify for NPD, though, or if they’re just garden-variety douche canoes.
AllisonW – this is no ordinary douche canoe we’re dealing with here – this guy’s an outrigger.
The irony is absolutely thick today, isn’t it?
Whenever I see douchecanoe I read it as douche + volcano. Like they are so douchey that it erupts in a fit of lava and duderage. lol
@Paradoxical Intention
I fucking love those live-action Dalmatian movies. I’m stealing that .gif.
Nay, a veritable catamaran, even.
Add me to those totally NOT surprised that a guy who harps on sexual assault in a deliberate effort to discomfit his classmates (many of whom have suffered some form of it themselves) turns out to be One Of THOSE Guys.
And add me, also, to those totally NOT surprised that the MRAssholes, a.k.a. the Abusers’ Lobby, would take up for this…ABUSER.
(A cataMORON, even…)
The write-up was pretty vague, I’m guessing he was air humping or something?
When people cause a ruckus in public with their unacceptable sexual behavior, it makes me sad for them. So many serious mental problems manifest themselves in that age bracket, then there are all these spiteful men’s rights groups feeding into their delusions and paranoia, essentially egging them on until they can be used as a martyr. Case in point, I suppose.
Not that everyone who disagrees with myself or feminism as a whole is mentally ill, obviously, but this young man obviously has some problems which have gotten worse as of late and people are taking advantage of his vulnerability.
k, I really have to say, again, maybe more bluntly this time: Conflating mental illness with entitlement issues and bad behavior says nothing useful about people who behave badly and it harms people who have mental illness.
When you do this, it does harm to the many, many, many people who are mad but not assholes and not sexual abusers.
Being an asshole or a sexual abuser is not prima facia evidence of mental illness.
Please don’t do this.
Honestly I reckon if a coach had to restrain him he must have been doing something pretty bad.
I always suspect men who spew rape apologia as being a rapist or other kind of sexual predator.
Especially when they try to back-pedal and flash progressive or left-wing “credentials” like True did, after that little publicity stunt he pulled.
I’ve come to the conclusion that any MRA or MRA-sympathizer who generally does this is what I call a “fauxgressive.” It’s a deflective technique that is meant to distract from the issue, in order to save face, by bringing up irrelevant factors in a specific issues by trying to appear like an ally while nonetheless antagonizing.
For example: someone espouses racist sentiments over the incidents in Ferguson, calling protesters “savages”, but is quick to point out that – hey – they voted for Obama. So that must mean they’re incapable of racism! Even though it doesn’t. At. All…
those poor lorikeets, i hope one took a dump on him.
It is SO easy to become a hero to the right-wing. Say something awful enough in a venue that will disapprove, and the next thing you know you have your own segment on Fox News.
I feel really bad for the players and other spectators at that rugby game.
I hope they ALL did.
Not surprised at this. What’s next, is he going to blame the rugby players for what they were wearing and “he just couldn’t help it” or something?
UGH. Just… UGH.
I’m guessing he’ll scream about his “rights” being violated because he wasn’t allowed to wank in full view of a girls’ rugby team, or some such.
