Rape-joke-loving Honey Badgers booted from #CalgaryExpo; highly ironic Tweets ensue

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's not actually what happened.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s not why you got booted.

Earlier today, the illustrious Honey Badger Brigade was booted from the Calgary Expo, a major Canadian fan convention devoted to all varieties of geeky pop culture.

The Honey Badgers — a mostly female A Voice for Men spinoff group known for its unlistenable internet “radio” shows — was sent packing after conventioneers complained about their connections to #GamerGate — a nine-month-long orgy of harassment targeting outspoken women in gaming and their supporters — and their alleged disruption of a panel devoted to women in comics.

According to Calgary Expo officials, the group was kicked out for “actively disregarding” the Expo’s efforts to provide “a positive and safe event” for attendees.

The Honey Badgers love to claim that they “don’t give a fuck,” but apparently their fans give quite a few, and AVFMers and #GamerGaters are rallying to their defense on Twitter. Which has led to some, well, pretty ironic Twitter exchanges, like this one below between this, er, intriguingly named #GamerGater and the official Calgary Expo account.

PRO TIP: If you’re trying to convince the world that the Honey Badgers didn’t deserve to be kicked out of the convention for contributing to an unsafe space for women, you should probably not do so while referencing “MasculineRapeFingers” in your Twitter handle.

Or include rape jokes/threats in your actual Tweets:

Of course, it’s no wonder the Honey Badgers have attracted fans like these, given how fond they are of rape jokes themselves. Their now-disassembled booth at the Expo featured a poster of #GamerGate mascot Vivian James — a character designed to reference a channer rape joke — hiding behind the Honey Badger mask.

And before Vivian James was even a thing, the Badgers sold t-shirts and other merchandise featuring a cartoon octopus they describe as “the world’s cutest rape joke.” No, really, here he is:

To see the full array of Mr. Tentacles merchandise available, visit their CafePress store. (Archived version here.)

I’m no lawyer, but it seems to me that this in itself would be enough to get the Honey Badgers booted from the Calgary Expo. A group that literally sells rape joke t-shirts and coffee mugs to raise money for itself is a group that doesn’t belong at a convention that’s trying to be “positive and safe” for its attendees.

Add to this their connection to #GamerGate — a hate movement — and A Voice for Men — a hate group — and it’s pretty clear that Calgary Expo officials had more than enough justification for their decision to send the Honey Badgers on their way.

EDIT: The woman behind the MasculineRapeFingers account insists “[m]y twitter handle isn’t a joke. I’m a female who enjoys rape fantasies.” I’m not sure why that makes the Twitter handle any more appropriate, but I’ve reworded the post accordingly.

Slightly OT: My hubby just told me that Anita Sarkeesian made the Time Magazine top 100 Most Influential People list!

That sound you hear is the misters chewing up the interwebs about it…

No one cares about their stupid show. And what they have to say can be summed up in one syllable:

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Unlurking to say two things
1: Sargon is one of those “TALKS FOREVER ABOUT SHIT HE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND” YouTube types and another gg figurehead that doesn’t care about games. He makes money off of whipping gg up into another dumb frenzy. (600+ dollars a video)

2: shut up venny

Seriously what is it with racists/sexists/other reactionary dirtbags on YouTube and their videos being about 8x longer than a person should need to cover something.

Its one of the running themes with them along with terrible reading comprehension and not understanding statistics.

Fucking hell, that’s another hour and a half of my life that you want me to waste on bullshit. Time is money, and when you waste someone else’s time, it’s no different from taking money out of their wallet.

Seriously. Why do all their rants need to be so long?

Why can’t they do what professionals (which they claim to be) do and write a goddamned outline of what they want to say, and cover the points?

It can’t be that hard:

1. We were kicked out of CalgaryExpo
a. This sucks
b. It must be the fault of SJWs
i. And CalgaryExpo for not letting us
1. Openly break their rules
2. Openly derail panels and make people uncomfortable with our presence

Boom. Done. All that can be summed up in roughly twenty minutes if you want to add detail.

None of this rambling for an hour and a half bullshit. That’s twelve dollars in minimum wage where I live.

Hell, that’s also three and some-odd episodes of Batman: The Animated Series (which I’m currently re-watching), six episodes of Steven Universe or Adventure Time, or most of a two-hour movie.

Or that’s almost an entire drawing for me. Lines, color, and shading/highlights.

I have a theory about the longwindedness of reactionary types. “Rational” is a thing you are, not a thing you do to them. They don’t recognize correct reasoning as being a conscious process. They start from the conclusion they like and just sort of spew forth whatever springs to mind as it springs to mind, sort of stream of consciousness until they run out of steam.

On the other hand, when you’re actually logically defending a position, you state your premises, demonstrate that they’re true and then explain how your conclusion necessarily follows and there’s an actual end to it. Because you’re actually doing it right.

Oh my divines, David!

I was playing Saint’s Row IV the day before yesterday (and yesterday and today), and there was one scene where I had to pilot an alien shuttle craft out of the bowels of the head of the fleet battleship to that song.

‘Twas glorious.

Lmao, PI, did your Avatar start gushing about Haddaway? Mine did. She’s got a Russian accent; it was exactly the kind of delirious nonsense I wanted out of an SR game.

Mine’s French and she did the same thing.

It was even better when I was doing missions with Pierce and my avatar and him started doing sing-alongs to “Opposites Attract” by Paula Abdoul. And then Zinyak got involved on the Biz Markie song and they were both like “RUINED! YOU RUINED IT HOW DARE YOU!”

I love Saints’ Row. It’s one of my favorite series of games of all time just for shit like this.

“venny, you’re tedious, so here’s a little challenge: from now on (until I change my mind) your comments have to contain a specific response to something someone else has written (and a quote from them) and cannot contain links to videos that are more than an hour long. If not, I won’t let them through. ”

Ok then, I am sorry for being tedious

I found a video where someone recorded all the voices doing the sing alongs! 😀

“It’s disappointing that they weren’t there to have a conversation or to listen to what we, and members of the audience, were saying. They wanted to stand up and have their say, but not to listen or try to understand the points of view other people in the room had. ”

Highlight on the last line. Which is probably why they never learn and they always lose. No one is interested in listening to a bunch of prima donnas who are shown to be in error time and time again but are incapable of seeing it.

They registered under false pretenses because they knew that if they registered as the AVFM affiliated Honey Badgers they most likely wouldn’t be welcome. They are hateful and are affiliated/got their start on a hate-site. She can say its not true and you can believe her but like most things that come from MRAs/GG it is just a steaming pile of shit.
I would hope that in the future you become less gullible and look at reality rather than just taking someone’s word because it fits your world view.

Oh, and I forgot to add that they obviously never did update the con and say “Hey, I know we registered as this webcomic but we’re actually there to do “anti-censorship” (LOL) and GG nonsense. They could have saved some money if they’d done that, probably.

I just checked the expos web site and the Honey badger brigade is listed as a exhibitor but the link which I didn’t click leads to a site called ‘exonospora’. Isn’t the allegation they registered under a different name. Not trying to defend the badgers just trying to understand things better.

sevenofmine

No, the allegation isn’t that they lied about their name. It’s that they lied about what they were there to do. They appear to have led the Expo to believe they were going to be promoting a web comic as opposed to being an outpost of a misogynist hate group with the intent to derail one or more panels.

Ah Ok I see. Well either way I’m still glad they weren’t there to ruin my or any ones else’s weekend with their BS
