Welcome back, my friends, to the harassment that never ends.
It’s not news that GamerGate is fading – the media hubbub has died down, and the last I checked the volume of Tweets to the #GamerGate hashtag has dropped to only about a fifth of what it was in its glory days.
But it’s too soon to say it’s over. Because while the number of Gaters has shrunk, the harassment of GamerGate’s targets goes on, and on, and on. Indeed, for the three “Literally Whos” who’ve been the central targets of #GamerGate harassment little has changed. The death threats, the rape threats, the insults, the harassing Tweets and comments and emails and phone calls all continue.
And then the Gaters accuse the “Literally Whos” of faking their harassment in a bid for sympathy and cash.
Let’s look at each in turn:
1) Anita Sarkeesian
Sarkeesian, the cultural critic whose harassment started years ago when she first announced her plans to make a video series on sexism in video games, recently posted a week’s worth of harassing and threatening Tweets directed at her; there were more than a hundred of them, including numerous death and rape threats, suggestions that she kill herself in the most painful way possible, and assorted other abusive comments bristling with hatred and misogynsitic slurs.
2) Zoe Quinn
As Sarkeesian sorts through her Twitter notifications, game developer Zoe Quinn tries to figure out how to continue her life and her career in the face of unrelenting and irrational hostility and harassment. In an eloquent meditation on the subject on her blog, she writes
I’ve been trying to take a day to just be a regular person, recenter myself, and have the energy to get back to work with the same enthusiasm I tend to have, but every attempt gets cut short by some fresh, new, horrible news about someone trying to get into my accounts, a new asinine conspiracy theory being used as an excuse to dox people I went to high school with, friends freaking out because anonymous message board people are talking about how to mail them bombs, or just another death threat. At least the death threats have become somewhat routine.
Stalked by a restless mob of haters, she’s constantly under the microscope, her every utterance picked at by her critics looking for anything they can use as fodder for their increasingly baroque and fanciful conspiracy theories; as she puts it, she’s faces, every day, “a mob of Nerd McCarthyists nipping at your heels and spinning up TMZ-style blog posts every time you fart.”
Indeed, Quinn recently found herself accused of terrorism for making a joke on Twitter suggesting she planned on “burning hollywood to the ground” if an upcoming episode of Law & Order SVU loosely based on GamerGate ends up having a victim-blaming plot twist.
Do these people honestly believe that Quinn is really planning on burning anything to the ground? I don’t know, and I don’t think it even matters to them; it’s just another “crime” to add to Quinn’s GamerGate rap sheet.
I can only assume that GamerGate will go after the imaginary Hollywood director “Alan Smithee” next; after all, he’s credited with directing the 1998 film Burn Hollywood Burn. Come to think of it, Public Enemy had a song with that name as well.
3) Brianna Wu
Meanwhile, game developer Brianna Wu is facing an even creepier threat: a disturbed and delusional “GamerGate vigilante” who bombarded Wu with a succession of threats that alarmed her enough to contact the police – then, en route to her house, he flipped the Prius he’d stolen from his mom on an icy highway. And yes, this really happened; he posted a video of himself having a screeching meltdown on the side of the road next to a wrecked Prius balanced on its side. (I’m avoiding his name because I honestly don’t want to give him any more publicity.)
He claims that he meant Wu no harm, and merely wanted to challenge her to a “street race” to which she never agreed – apparently thinking that if he scared her enough to flee her home on her motorcycle this would count as a race.
But he also apparently sent a friend to try to “disable her comms” (communications) – the friend evidently never arrived – and tried to convince an online acquaintance with a gun to accompany him for this “op.” Thankfully, the acquaintance refused, and posted what he said was their chat to a message board devoted to trolling. An excerpt:
[2:52:07 PM] [name redacted]: SHE IS WORKING WIth the National Social Justice Party to stop gamers!!!!
[2:52:35 PM] [name redacted]: I SENT ELI UP TO DISABLE HER COMMS WE DONT HAVE MUCH TIME BEFORE SHE ASKS FOR REINFORCEMENTS THOUGH AND I NEED YOU FOR BACK UP!!
[2:52:52 PM] FlyAwayNow – Matthew.N: What? You want me to bring my rifle or what?
[2:53:05 PM] [name redacted]: YEA JUST LIKE IN PAYDAY 2 DUDE ITLL BE SICK
[2:53:36 PM] [name redacted]: IN CASE SHE SHOOTS AT MY CAR I CANT GET BULLET HOLES IN MY MOMS CAR SHE ILL KILL ME ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I STOLE IT
[2:54:10 PM] [name redacted]: WERE GONNA STREET RACE HER SHE WONT BE ABLE TO DRIVE IN THE STORM SO WE WILL BE ABLE TO WIN EASY AND TAKE YOUR RIFLE IN CASE SHE SHOOTS US TOO
[2:54:32 PM] FlyAwayNow – Matthew.N: You’re not laying a hand on my gun.
[2:54:42 PM] [name redacted]: ILL DRIVE YOU SHOOT
And now he seems to have convinced himself that Wu somehow sabotaged his car in an attempt to “assassinate” him. From his video:
I honestly don’t quite know what to make of the threatener or the threats. His behavior is so strange and erratic and almost literally unbelievable that it would be easy to dismiss him as a troll.
But then there is that wrecked Prius. And several years worth of videos on Youtube that suggest either that he’s sincere — or that’s he’s the most dedicated troll since Andy Kaufman’s fake comedian alter ego Tony Clifton, who somehow managed to survive Kaufman’s death.
Is GamerGate responsible for his actions? On the pro-GamerGate subreddit Kotaku In Action, the regulars largely dismissed the threatener as a troll; one accused Wu of being “a disgusting human” for publicizing the threat and being “so quick to paint him a Gamergate supporter.” Never mind that in the video the threatener repeatedly describes himself a “#GamerGate vigilante,” and that he would not have chosen her as a target had she not already been subject to months of vilification from GamerGate.
GamerGate, which is quick enough to take credit for charity work done in its name, shies away from taking responsibility for any of the terrible shit anyone does in its name. And in recent months many of the remaining Gaters seem to have stopped even pretending to care about the victims of GamerGate harassment. Indeed, @_icze4r, the former head of GamerGate’s much-vaunted, now-abandoned “Harassment Patrol” was one of those who egged the threatener on with a jokey supportive Tweet.
It’s a dangerous game they’re playing. As Wu notes
Someone is going to die from your recklessness if you don't look in the mirror and understand the consequences of your choices.
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) February 1, 2015
What any of this has to do with “ethics in video games journalism” I couldn’t tell you.
Yeah that video is a great example of why we need better mental health care in this country. For fucks sake their is a video of him rocking back and forth clutching an airsoft gun, wearin tinfoil on his head, a windshield sun blocker , and saying Obama wants to make a 3d model of his dick. (Heard that second-hand. Don’t want to click to find out.)
Hey Dave, just a heads up but I think you should label trigger warnings because of the content in this post.
What the ever loving fuck.
Remember when trolling and flame wars were just this little harmless sideline of the hardcore Netizen culture? Something that didn’t extend beyond the digital world, never hurt anyone and was part of a young communication medium’s search for its and its users’ identity? I don’t, but I heard it was that way once.
It’s really bizarre to me that anyone would react like how Gaters have, drumming up sustained harrassment campaigns for flimsy reasons and continuing them long after the initial reasons are gone. I mean, who on Earth has had this kind of crazy internet backlash besides these women? Even legitimately horrible people and groups haven’t gotten this kind of tenacious, savage internet abuse.
For some reason, the part I’m really sticking on is his idea that beating her in a street race will expose her as a corrupt gamer. Like…by what bizarre logic do street racing and corruption in gaming have anything to do with each other?
“I may be Head-Injured, Wounded in Combat Ops, but this isn’t over.”
This is a confluence of so many tragedies at once. On top of gamergate’s usual bullshit, you add a dysfunctional mental health care system, woeful support for wounded veterans, and the violence of the sustained injury in the first place.
@Ira
Did you read the cracked.com article from the reforemd online troll? IT’s an interesting read pointing out how when he was trolling, it was about pranking, making jokes at those who take themselves too seriously…none of this crusading “Destroy all women”bull shit.
Sure, all trolls are annoying, though the article made me long for the days where a meaningless troll got their kicks through being silly, rather than only through encouraging suicide.
The Gaters still think they’re actually gaining momentum. They’ve been crowing about how they shut down Joystiq. Also, anytime I mention Zoe Quinn to them they get all, “She’s old news. We don’t care about her anymore.”
I don’t understand how people can get so fired up about this. It’s not like any of these ladies beheaded hostages or anything.
I think a few things have happened:
1) The core supporters of GamerGate, the dedicated crowd, are crazier simply because everyone less crazy has left, gotten bored, etc.
2) I think it’s clear there’s a faction that just enjoys egging people on. I would not be surprised at some point to find out that folks who just enjoy causing trouble outnumber the True Beleivers.
3) Some of this seems to be “how far can we push it?”
What’s weird is, yes, anyone who watches will see Wu is right. Someone is going to die. It could be some poor woman who says the wrong thing. It could be a famous person a mentally ill follower goes after. It could be any number of things, but this level of crazy doesn’t die down easy on its own.
I also think the gaming industry bears some burden. A statement from several companies could tamp this down. A public, organized rejection by industry bigwigs could have an effect. Instead they stand on the sidelines.
And when the worst happens, what will they say then?
Fang, heads up, you’re going to get jumped on for the word “crazy” and the content of your post will not be heard.
To avoid a huge OMIGAWD ABLISM argument and derail (its not a fun or interesting discussion to have thirty times a day) would you mind just not using it here in the future? Regardless your feelings on the matter, this community decided they don’t tolerate use of the word “crazy” and equate it with ablism and that’s that SO to avoid a big, long derail, can we just not use the word?
@marinerachel
Thanks for letting me know. I post here rarely, but probably should have been more thoughtful and less casual in my choice of words.
Maybe we need a new critter to add to the menagerie of teal dears, high horses and unicorns to denote mental health ableism in comments?
Or is that what unicorns are? I was never clear about those.
I’d prefer that to engaging in the same tiresome discussion over and over again. As much as I’d like people to say “OK, if that’s the rules, whatever” and either stick around and not use it or or leave the blog, I find the long fucking explanations and ensuing arguments re: WHY some of the commentariat has decided the word isn’t acceptable just as boring. I’m so tired of the long winded fucking derails, particularly when, aside from use of the word “crazy” the post was a great contribution.
I know I’m not really helping to not derail things here… But seriously… I don’t understand ableism. Is there a primer link one of you can give me so I can see why it’s wrong? Because to me, saying someone / something is “crazy” isn’t offensive to me or anyone I know… Same with “moronic” and others… Just seems “stupid?” (Is that one allowed?) And it doesn’t make sense…
I seriously don’t get it and it continues to baffle me. If I understood it I’d have an easier time because knowing WHY something is offensive does a lot better job than just saying “this word, this word, this word, and this word are offlimits.”
I’m just frustrated. I’m not trying to say I should be able to use those words–I just don’t get it and I’d like to.
Gamergaters are always saying that gamers always threaten and harass. That they’re trolls who will never act on it. That women are being too sensitive for objecting to it. If you read the week of terrible tweets Anita Sarkeesian got, there’s several that say something to that effect. But when Zoe Quinn makes an offhand comment about burning Hollywood, all of a sudden threats are serious business!
Nooooo, blockquote monster. I saw my tag fail when I hit “Post Comment” but couldn’t stop it. D:
You may think that street racing in a Prius is fucking stupid, but it’s actually a meta-commentary about ethics in games journalism.
marinerachel: that said, I suspect there’s some more deep-seated problem with the guy who went after Brianna Wu than mere sexist assholery. Enough that maybe he should be checked by a doctor.
@Fang
A statement from companies in the games industry would likely just result in more conspiracy fantasies about SJWs and feminazis. These are the people who apparently see no irony in accusing their opponents of anti-semitism for criticizing a Gater who happens to be Jewish while two posts away another Gator goes on a rant about the Jews controlling Jewpedia and posts an antisemitic caricature of Anita Sarkeesian. There’s no quick way to end this unless law enforcement starts taking internet harassment seriously.
Now, I’m not normally one to be ablist about things, but looking at some of the communications this dude’s made, his video, the fact that those shits at the linked board (and oh boy oh boy do I not want to get into that) indicate that this is a pattern of behavior…
This guy has some obvious, obvious, OBVIOUS mental health problems. Like, “I’m not sure that this guy can be legally held responsible for his actions” level here. And honestly, he dearly seems to need professional help.
Maybe he’s out of touch with reality. I guess I just don’t care.
“I can’t get bullet holes in my mom’s Prius.” ROTFLMAO.
I watched a smidgen of that Prius video, but I stopped watching when his words became incoherent screeching. I just had to back away. The comments section was filled with similar vitrol, and I backed out of that too without commenting. (People were commenting that this guy was clearly in the wrong, and he was going around throwing slurs and congratulating people who were doing the same.)
This guy has serious problems. I’m not sure what they are exactly, but they’re obvious, and they’re serious. I’d start with reality-deficient though.
As for the Goobers: Of course they won’t own up to the fact this guy labeled himself as a Gater. That would mean they have recognized that they have irrational people on their side, who are out doing terrible things, and they can’t handle that being anywhere close to true.
So of course they’re going to use the “No True Gater!” fallacy here too.
But, they get harassed by Ess-Jay-Dubbyas all the timeeee!111!!!!” So, harassment and doxxing of SJWs is fine. They’re evil. Why? Because they are! They don’t want us to have video games anymore, despite them saying they like video games too and just want to see more with women, people of color, disabled, and transpersons in them! They just want to get rid of ALL games! HOW DARE THEY! [/sarcasm]
A guy went to go shoot Brianna Wu, crashed his car on the way there, claimed she somehow tampered with his Mom’s Prius (that he admits to stealing), and somehow we’re not supposed to be concerned about it.
Yup. Typical day in BackAsswards Land.
I saw a post on Tumble alleging that a stereotypical, short-hair-dyed-a-mad-colour, feminist maced a GGer at a university event with free mace given out by a women’s group. And the mace got into the A/C and at least one person washospitalised. The sources are 8chan, KotakuInAction and Twitter. But I’m sure it really, truly happened and isn’t at all a ‘false flag’.
