The British teenager who tried to kill 3 women because no one will date him has fans. But that's not the scariest thing about him.

Ben Moynihan, adapted from the photo he sent police, and which led to his arrest

[CONTENT WARNING: Misogynistic violence, rape apologia]

His complaint was a familiar one:

I think every girl is a type of slut, they are fussy with men nowadays, they do not give boys like us a chance.

You can find nearly identical laments in the profiles of self-described “nice guys” on OkCupid, on Men’s Rights blogs, and on forums for self-described “Incels” comisserating about their “involuntary celibacy” and what they see as the shallowness of young women.

But these words actually come from a video filmed by Ben Moynihan, a British teenager who was convicted of attempted murder earlier this week after stabbing three women in an attempt to take a sort of revenge upon the “weaker” gender he felt had made his life miserable by denying him sex. Another young man trying to punish women with violence for the “crime” of not dating him.

“I am still a virgin,” he wrote in one note. “Everyone is losing it before me, that’s why you are my chosen target.” In another note, he declared that “all women needs to die and hopefully next time I can gauge [sic] their eyes out.”

Moynihan’s twisted logic is of course eerily similar to that of Elliot Rodger, who went on a shooting spree in Isla Vista last spring in an attempt to “punish” women for their lack of interest in dating him, which he declared to be “a crime that can never be forgiven.”

Thankfully, Moynihan, unlike Rodger, was captured by police before he actually succeeded in killing anyone.

Not so thankfully, both of these men have their fans, including some amongst the usual suspects I write about on this blog. On the incel hangout slutHATE – the successor to PUAhate, on which Elliot Rodger was an occasional commenter – both Rodger and Moynihan have become heroes of a sort to some of the more bitter commenters. Or at least the source of much amusement.

In response to news about Moynihan’s trial, one slutHATEr posted a thread asking “Okay, which one of you did this?” “A new supreme gentleman rises,” wrote another in a different thread devoted to the would-be killer.

A third commenter, going by the name Homesick Alien, asked the question “Are Females days numbered?” listing an assortment of incels who’d killed “females” in an act of twisted “revenge” for their lackluster or nonexistent dating lives. In the comments, Homesick Alien chillingly wrote that

I’m sure someone somehow is rightfully very rageful currently planning the next shooting spree . We can only hope it’ll be more elaborate. Female entitlement is off the charts now, they are out of control,. It’s about time they are put in their fucking place.

Another posted a link to Rodger’s 150-page manifesto, suggesting that “it has the potential to motivate incels to damage the females.”

In a thread from several months ago, a slutHATEr calling himselt NewGenious119 went after fellow incels for not supporting shooting sprees enthusiastically enough.

Seriously, is there something mentally wrong with you? Thinking that a school full of sluts and frat stars getting slain by an incel is a bad thing is characteristic of a normalfag mindset. Our ONLY hope for ever getting to fuck multiple hot sluts is if there are enough incels in the western world who snap and cause bloodshed. It’s the only way that sluts and alphas will realize and accept that there are serious consequences for allowing so many males to live their lives in misery.

Emphasis mine.

As it turned out, there was no need for him to worry that other incels didn’t support spree killngs aimed at “sluts,” as assorted commenters soon let him know.

The rogue MRA and American-Women-Boycotter who calls himself John Rambo seconded his sentiment, writing

I wouldn’t do one myself. But I wouldn’t prevent one from happening if I knew it would as long as I wouldn’t die or a girl that willing to fuck me would. …

Honestly, I truly have very little sympathy for the victims.

A commenter calling himself Worthless Trash only had one complaint: that the death tolls weren’t higher.

I just wish these guys would make better plans and kill their targets and more of them, but sadly most of them have a weakened will-power after all the years of rejections and maybe bullying.

Also i don’t care if it will solve the problem or not, i just feel better hearing this, it’s like divine justice, they feel so superior but in the end they die like worms, just like they treat other guys, like worms, so in the end we are all equal.

Still others offered their assent:

I personally rejoice whenever I hear news of a school shooting.

The higher the death count, the better

i like their kill count high, because it’s always satisfying seeing someone arrogant going from rich to poor, beautiful too ugly from popular to dead

While a few commenters spoke out against the idea of mass murder as a reasonable response to a lack of dates, they were in the distinct minority.

And then there was this guy:

i support ERism [Elliot Rodgerism], but I would never do it myself, my brother is a doctor and his career would be ruined if our family name ever got tarnished

It would be a little easier to dismiss all this as merely internet dumbassery, were it not for the fact that Rodger went out and killed 6 people after posting similar comments on the message board that later became slutHATE.

While commenters like these are a distinct minority even in the sordid world of the manosphere, the sad and scary fact is that there are a frightening number of young and not-so-young men who have embraced one of the central assumptions of the murder-spree-supporting incels of slutHATE – the notion that women who put “nice guys” in the “friend zone” are committing some kind of crime against them, and deserve to be punished for it, individually or collectively.

You can see variations on this in assorted memes attacking women – much as Moynihan and Rodgers did – for supposedly preferring “bad boys” and assholes over the “nice guys” of the world.

fuckbuddyzonememe

ce29786c71fc4367cb976e3209436c298c91044f7524f87c740c96fa6c4610a5

Other “friend zone” memes are a bit darker.

Insanity-Wolf-SHE-PUT-YOU-IN-THE-FRIEND-ZONE-PUT-HER-IN-THE-RAPE-ZONE

And darker still:

She-put-me-in-the-friend-zone_o_133310

674ab013960bfc9b5ff79074306a953b

And somehow even darker than that:

Friend_87330e_2546785

And we’re just begun to scratch the surface here.

In a followup post, I will look at the ways in which the rampant “slutbashing” of Men’s Rights Activists and other manosphere denizens helps to feed the toxic culture of aggrieved sexual entitlement that has contributed to violence against women.

For everybody who has a hard time understanding how these guys “think”, here is an “explanation”:
http://www.donotlink.com/dc0m

This guy, answering the article by Tracy Clark-Flory at Salon (linked by David) tries to refute her concept that male entitlement is at the root of the stabbing spree, and, in order to do that, says that “male entitlement to sex” is no different than “people entitlement to health care, or education”. I am not kidding.

“Male sexual entitlement” is a sort of feminist buzzword. But, it has never really been dissected. What exactly does “male sexual entitlement” mean? And, why, exactly, is it so evil?
[…]
Feminists tend to be on the political left. The same political left that tends to believe that everyone is entitled to education, health care, shelter, food, etc. These are no more “things” than sex is a “thing”. Teachers, for example, are required to provide education. Doctors are required to provide health care. So, if people are entitled to education and health care, that would mean that they are, in a sense, entitled to doctors and teachers, who are people.

So, summing up. Sex is not a shared activity, it has nothing to do with humans relating to one another. It’s a job. No wait. It’s a human right. No wait. it’s a thing like healthcare. So it’s a service? That’s it! It’s a service! Just like doctors provide a service to people, women are supposed to provide a service to men? And get paid for it? What is this guy proposing, state-funded prostitution?

This is so fucked up I can’t even.

Besides, I don’t see people proposing to go and kill all doctors because they lack health coverage, so something must be missing in his equation, you’d think a Logickal Man would realize it.

Also, is it just me, or do people who believe in some sort of female conspiracy sound more than a bit like the people who believe in a Jewish conspiracy?

I think it’s the apparently common desire to feel that you’re special or chosen or intelligent enough to “see through” the ordinary things of life and that you have superior insight into the way the world works.

The fact that most of these ideas – worldwide Jewish or Freemason or climate scientist conspiracies and every other flavour – are just plain daft when they’re not obviously the work of nasty fantasists with an agenda. The world wide feminist hegemony is in the daft category — with enough nastiness to have appeal to the least admirable citizens anywhere and everywhere.

Sluthate is really misunderstood. We just want sexual equality for males. Right now it isn’t fair because girls control the sexual marketplace, and they are hypergamous (males are too) so only have sex with better looking guys than they are. This is compounded by the fact that humans perceive themselves as better looking than they really are. So a 5/10 girl will think she is a 6/10, but because of hypergamy she will aim for 7/10 guys. This results in non-looksmatched couples, and severely disadvantages average and below average guys, especially seeing as they perceive themselves as being more attractive than they are as well which makes it particularly hard to settle for a girl who is objectively multiple points below you.

But even some of the people on sluthate are high enough looks rated that they could slay decent
girls, but they are super aspie so can’t cuz of that.

But this entire situation can be avoided simply by utilization or government funded prostitution
coupled with heavy marketing to make it socially acceptable and to reshape the human mating
process. Primarily most guys just want to fuck hot girls and don’t care about long term relationships,
so the best solution is just to give all guys an adequate yearly supply of access to attractive whores.
Then instead of only the top males having access to and monopolizing the hot females, we
could all share access to them and even not even need non-state females.

A lot of us are just sick and tired of bothering with the female situation, but we need sex because
it is like food or water in essence if not in degree. Also, it’s not fair if some top alpha male can
fuck a hot girl every single night while other guys can never do it. And not fair to make the
other guys pay for sex with others get it for free. Since females wont distribute sex in fairer
ways, the solution is clearly to just legalize prostitution and have the tax payers fund it. Then
we can all have sex with hot girls just the same and nobody is made to feel like shit by hypergamous females.

I did often question how much these wretches actually believe. The theories are so obviously stupid and hyperbolic that only the most mundane of idiots could be taken on. Then it occurred to me… The wretches *want* to believe and so give a great deal of latitude to the posturing of the “leaders.” Anyone unburdened with rage issues (and/or an insatiable thirst for attention/trolling) and with basic intelligence can recognise the manosphere as the preserve of the weak, the deluded, the stupid and the hateful. The true danger of the manosphere is that a statistically tiny percentage of this thankfully small number of people are weak, deluded, stupid and hateful to carry out the type of threats others fantasise and emote about online.

The bad side of the internet:
all those disgusting, useless maggots that would have otherwise disappeared into well-deserved nothingness can now reinforce each other, to the point they actually think that they’re a majority that brings revolution.
It does not just give a voice to the voiceless, but it also gives a voice to the ones that don’t deserve any.

dorabella, that quote about “sex=a thing like healthcare/a right” is chilling.

But. If we are to accept that “evil feminists are leftist who fight for basic rights like healthcare and education, which sex should be counted among,” I feel like I should be able to generalize and say “MRA-types are rightist a who fight against basic rights like healthcare and education.” So by the very, erm, “logic” that dude uses, he is fighting against his “right” to sex as a thing everyone should have.

Yet another example as to why we need to put an end to toxic masculinity. When we teach teenagers that if you can’t get laid, you’re a failure as a man, shit like this happens.

That is horrifying. What reality is that guy living in? Because I’m pretty sure it’s different from the reality where I live. He actually acknowledges that he feels entitled to sex in the same way in the same way that he is entitled to get an education and, yet, male sexual entitlement is still a myth. Ummmmm…what?

It’s unusual that the perpetrator didn’t use a gun (though I’m sure he would have if he’d had access to one), and he didn’t kill himself afterwards. Maybe the investigation will uncover some additional insights into where his toxic stew of horrible beliefs originated, exactly who/what encouraged them, and what turned them into action.

I don’t understand where these young guys get off pining for an era that never existed and they didn’t even live through. Women have been voting, working outside the home, earning their own money, independently choosing their partners, and using birth control for how many decades now? By now, female agency should be an unremarkable fact of life. And yet these guys carry on like deposed French aristocracy who’ve recently lost their status and all their worldly possessions.

I also don’t understand the “sex, and sex alone, will magically cure all my problems!” mindset. To hear these guys tell it, women are a prescription drug that they desperately need that they’re being denied access to. Their reasons for needing girlfriends aren’t the least bit sympathetic. They may claim to be hurting and lonely, but their outward posturing and behavior say otherwise. It’s mindless, self-centered pelt acquisition, without any consciousness that the women they target have their own thoughts and needs.

Reading this stuff just turns my stomach.

When we teach teenagers that if you can’t get laid, you’re a failure as a man, shit like this happens.

The thing that flashed in bright neon in dorabella’s link to me was that the writer expended a lot of vitriol on the notion of “entitlement” mentioned in the item he cited. Despite writing several paragraphs, he found neither the time nor the energy to devote a single word to the equally important concept of “toxic masculinity” highlighted in the last line of the excerpt he cited.

“Strange,” I thought.

OK. A thought a lot of other things really but maybe I shouldn’t say them out loud.

cyberwulf

doesn’t have his shit together (meaning, steady employment, paying bills, other grown-up stuff)

Insecure employment and unemployment are caused by people not having their shit together apparently, nothing to with economic cycles, capitalism etc. Mass layoffs and businesses going bust, it’s just the workers being immature.

Why has it become so fashionable to treat unemployment and insecue employment as a problem saused by the individual and not a structural problem?

I get the sense that they see themselves as once-sensitive souls who were cruelly rejected one time too many and that opened their eyes to the way the world “really” works. So they can say “You turned me into a monster.”

I’m not even sure if they realise that what they’re looking for is not a cure for their lonely hearts but a trophy to provide proof of their masculinity. They want Bro Points. They’re so engrossed in the idea that sex is what makes a man they’ve made it part of their identity, which is partly why they take it so personally. But what they’ve also internalised is that women are just a means to an end, sex vending machines that refuse to vend and it’s not the guy that’s the problem, it’s the machine. Dude is being defrauded! He put kindness coins in for pete’s sake, and he shouldn’t even have to, it should be free! Sex is his right as a man! THE SEX VENDING MACHINES ARE SELFISH ENTITLED BITCHES! *rage against the machines*

(Hit post too soon)… I guess it’s a chicken and egg problem. MGTOW are trying to justify their reduced circumstances by blaming women instead of larger market forces, and acting as if those circumstances are a desirable goal for everybody.

They’re trying to make lemons out of lemonade, only they added way too much shit to the recipe.

Also, the guy in mildly’s link seems to, or at least in the salon article comments, insist that sex is a “human need” like food and water. This has been debunked so many times yet certain men keep trying to play this card like it’s valid. No. Sex is not a “human need”. You can go get it if you want but only if it’s consensual. Otherwise nobody is stopping you. A lot of people go for years without sex or even losing their virginity but they’re fine. Why? Because they know it’s not the end all be all. Sex is not necessary for survival and the whole “man’s got needs” excuse is a hollow lie created to push women into sex. To exploit the fact that they’ve been told from day one they should be “good girls”, kind and accommodating. It’s a coercion tactic, not biotroof.

But I’m sure it’s totally our fault that there are so many men like that around.

Always women’s fault. Even among commenters of blogs like this.

Did I say it was your fault?

That’s a horrible thing to say. I have also met a disproportionate number of men who have felt that way at least to some extent, with horrible consequences.

As if I don’t spend enough time thinking “what’s wrong with me?”

Did I say there was something wrong with you if you encounter a disproportionate number of men who felt that way?

I am writing the following in no way to diminish the responsibility of those prominent or active in the manosphere, but I believe the majority of MRA/PUA/MGTOW bloggers, commenters and Redditers are trolls who recognise the theories and theorists as childish nonsense but nevertheless jump on the bandwagon to get attention.

I would say you are vastly overestimating the level of self-awareness in that crowd. Most of them are clinging to their conspiracies as they reinforce their sense of self-pity, which for many of them is the only thing propping up what little self-esteem they have.

It’s unusual that the perpetrator didn’t use a gun (though I’m sure he would have if he’d had access to one),

We don’t really have guns in England. We used to, but they were banned after a couple of shooting sprees (Hungerford and Dunblane, specifically.

So these guys’ theme song is that hideous Guns ‘n’ Roses Song “I Used to Love Her (But I Had to Kill Her)”

I’d have gone for this one:
