At We Hunted the Mammoth headquarters, the tree is already up.

An open thread for personal stuff, continuing from here.

As usual for these threads: no trolls, no MRAs, no I’m-not-really-an-MRA-buts, don’t be mean.

Update: one of my two fosters got adopted, and altogether 4 of the 12 puppies. So I have my leftover one and another from the same litter, and we’ll do the same thing again in 2 weeks.

That’s not actually a cat tree, it is quite plainly a warhead for the ‘Vermin Death Star’ done up with a star on top.

So much thread to catch up on!

So I’m going to cheat with a general “Hi and welcome/welcome back” for newly delurked and returning Mammotheers. ::waves at teh internetz in general::

Adding lots of hugs to the barrel for everyone needing them, and congrats to all those having good stuff happen.

saphy – LBT left the site a while back; you could call it irreconcilable differences, I guess.

ellesar – I just went to the everyday sexism site via Google and didn’t have any trouble getting there.

That cat bikini (octokini?) pic always makes me laugh. 😀

So there’s this thing in Kentucky where they age sweet Concord wine in used bourbon barrels, and it is divine.

FYI to anyone who lives in/near Kentucky USA.

Has there been any response from the NRA’s regrading the ED article about them?

Luckily he woke up but had full blown psychosis due to the encephalopathy that he had. Then one day he was his normal self. It was quite amazing.

May not even be the encephalopathy. My husband nearly knocked/kicked a couple of ICU staff to the other side of the room when they started to wake him up. Took them a couple of tries until they were fully ready to deal with the overly physical response. Then when he was in the ordinary ward, they had to call in the security staff a couple of times in the middle of the night (though that was as much their own fault as anyone else’s. It didn’t matter how many times we told them that he really didn’t know where he was or what was happening each. and. every. time. he. woke. they just wouldn’t handle him any better. One witless casual even tried to tell me that he could use the bell to call her if he needed her when he woke. She looked completely blank when I asked her how on earth he’d know that she was there and that the thing in his bed was a bell. She just didn’t get it. So much for “specialling”.)

By the time he’d been there for a month and this stuff was pretty well over, we got the benefit of a part time nurse who’d previously done 10 years or so fulltime in ICU. His view was that many patients coming out of coma had had their sense of time and place completely destroyed by the process. He’d dealt with dozens who’d had exactly the same violent responses to being woken from coma. He was fantastic. He got more physical rehab achieved in a few days than anyone else had in a couple of weeks.

Oh god. Those names. I start tearing up before I’ve read more than a couple of them, but you have to read them all.

Did people see this? NYPD used sonic cannons on protestors. The Oakland PD threatened to do that during protests after the verdict on the Oscar Grant case but didn’t do it, which makes the NYPD even nastier than the Oakland PD. That’s quite an achievement.

mildlymagnificent, that’s terrifying. I had no idea coma did that to people.

cassandra, I hadn’t read about it in this case, but I’m sure I read about sonic cannon being used on protesters in the US not that long ago, maybe a few months?

They used it in Ferguson too.

Surprised, I am not.

I think they used them for occupy protests too.

Yep

I think it might have been the Occupy ones where I heard about it.

It’s interesting how some police departments are particularly awful. The NYPD is one, LAPD is another, which might lead people to think it’s a huge city problem, but nope, Oakland PD is awful too.

Apparently it’s uncommon enough that people who work in ICUs might not have come across it until they’ve put in a few years. Certainly I’d never heard of it and neither had my nurse educator daughter – but she works mostly with kids and not in ICU. But you’d think that people would have had some experience with people who were, for the time being, disoriented and reacting badly to that.

More random sexism – GOT fans angry with Natalie Dormer for refusing to shoot an explicit sex scene involving a character who’s a 13 year old boy (she’s in her 30s, not sure how old her character is meant to be but it’s definitely not 13). Note in particular the fact that though there are a few women among the complainers most of the people arguing that child molestation is just awesome if the child is a boy are men.

(Also, I already liked Dormer, now I like her even more.)
