With #GamerGate floundering, the Internet Douchebag Squad whips up a #Shirtstorm

Graph tracking the decline of #GamerGate, and the surge of #Shirtstorm, posted by GGer @Eggkin “thanking #shirtstorm & the femloons for keeping the spark alive.”

By all rights, the furor over rocket scientist Matt Taylor’s cheesecake shirt should have died down by now. After being chided earlier this week for marring the celebration over the landing of a space probe ON A GODDAMNED COMET by doing interviews in a tacky shirt covered with half-naked ladies, Taylor offered a brief but heartfelt apology. You would have thought we’d all be able to move on.

Not so fast. Because these days apparently no controversy can ever be over as long as it serves someone’s interest to keep it going. And so a loose but very familiar coalition of reactionaries and antifeminists and angry techies have started flogging an amorphous cause they call #Shirtgate or, more popularly, #Shirtstorm, purporting to be outraged that Taylor was “humiliated” into apologizing.

So many of the angriest voices in this, er, conversation are #GamerGaters it looks a lot like a sequel. Call it GamerGate Part Two: The Straw Graspening. And it’s not just me making the connection: #GamerGaters and #Shirtstormers, often one and the same, are making the connection:

https://twitter.com/Scrumpmonkey/status/533409838207078400

Heck, our old friend Milo is making the connection:

Oh, it’s a veritable #GamerGate Old Home Week! GG mainstays Thunderf00t and Mundane Matt have rushed out videos about The Shirt.

People are making graphics covered with hard-to-read text:

B2hh9YqIUAA6Tua.jpg large

There are giant complicated conspiracy theory graphics covered with red lines and angry red text. This one notes that Chris Plante, who wrote an article criticizing Taylor’s shirt, also wrote one of the now-notorious “Gamers are Dead” pieces.

https://twitter.com/Reyeko_/status/533482641774100480

Apparently there were a few dudes who were none too pleased with Plante’s story on The Shirt:

https://twitter.com/plante/status/533244307105648640

#Shirtstormers wrote angry “letters” in too-small-type. (Click here for larger, more readable version and here for one with angry graphics, too.)

https://twitter.com/Alpha_duck1/status/533698520100777984

While others tried to draw a parallel between Taylor’s alleged “humiliation” and … rape.

Neo-reactionaries and “Dark Enlightenment” types see opportunity in the #Shirtstorm hashtag.

https://twitter.com/antidemblog/status/533341319184531456

https://twitter.com/BernardChapin/status/533628518077186049

As do MRAs:

https://twitter.com/deanesmay/status/533758421158227969

As does this familiar name:

They’re all there, all hoping to turn a debate over a shirt into another endless internet Benghazi.

With VDare they’re dipping into the white supremacist pool (to the surprise if nobody)

I love how feminists simply COMMENTED about the shirt and people act like someone set the guy on fire. Feminists never sent death and rape threats en masse to the guy, just told him that his shirt represented the boy’s club of science; a boy’s club does not include women. This is goddamn easy as shit.

Cartoon cheesecake boobs on purple polyester is “edgy”? These people do know that Anchorman was a. a comedy and b. spoofing the 70s, right?

Shockingly, one can be a brilliant scientist and have horrible taste in clothes at the same time.

Also, the first thing that came to mind when I saw the shirt was that it reminded me of a Hawaiian shirt but instead of pineapples/etc., it was covered in cheesecake.

So dude made a poor choice in shit. Some people commented on it. He apologized like a decent human being. Life moved on for him and the original commenters. And now several days later, the internet asshole brigade has decided to “defend” him the same way they “defended” video games, by associating him with death and rape threats and general hatred of women. Asshole brigade, you’re not helping this guy. Don’t use him as your latest puppet to hate women.

Also, FUCK OFF VOX DAY. I’m so sick of the argument that gets lobbied at feminists:

Feminist: [insert issue here] is problematic for women because [insert reason here]

MRA: I thought feminism argues that females aren’t delicate little butterflies that need protecting. Now you’re saying you are?

Feminist: Of course not. We’re not delicate butterflies but this IS a legitimate problem.

MRA: Well if you’re not delicate little butterflies then stop whining and suck it up. You want to be treated like an equal? This is it.

I want to hope that this “new beginning” for #gamergate will jar loose those duped by cries of Ethics in Gaming Journalism before, since this makes it abundantly obvious again (just like at the start of #gamergate) that trivial bullshit sparked it all.

But I’m not holding my breath.

Ugh. I would think by now that the rest of the internet would be sooo over it. Mr Taylor apologised, even though nobody was really asking him to in the first place.

I doubt the STEM “boy’s club” has really been affected by any of it. The status quo prevails.

There’s probably not much mileage in Shirtgate to begin with. I want to hope that by tying themselves to this cause célèbre long after most people have lost interest, all these Manospherian Muppets can vanish into a puff of irrelevance.

And yet these are the same people still angry about that “Dongle” episode, and that incident concerning an elevator. It’s not enough for them to flog the dead horse, they have to drag it around town with them and yell at everyone about it.

Wait wait, so now gamergate was actually about feminism? I am so confused, I do not even.

As for the non-GG part of post… They didn’t understand anything. The tweet by @vdare is archetypal: they try to demonstrate how SJW are inconsistent, and they only prove that they just don’t listen to what they say.

Making a man apologize and cry…a crime worse than a thousand death and rape threats. They mad. Totes rational and logical, anger isn’t an emotion.

That letter though. It’s nice get up on a Sunday morning and have a hearty guffaw. I lost it at the “you have unleashed the dogs of reason and logic.” They just love monologuing like cartoon supervillains.

I was wise not to drink my tea at the computer this morning.

“Don’t judge me because of what I’m wearing – unless I’m a guy.”

Didn’t we have that in a comment only a day ago? Karl Stefanovic proved that one wrong quite well… http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/tv-and-radio/karl-stefanovics-sexism-experiment-today-presenter-wears-same-suit-for-a-year-20141115-11ncdz.html

I laughed so at “microaggression harpies”.

Apparently, angry tweets from feminists are a constant problem making science celebrity fame a hostile environment for sexists.

Off topic I found an article about Jessica Ennis-Hill and the threats she is getting. It can be triggering.

What does the “gate” word actually mean in this context anyways?

nightmarelyre: The “gate” part comes from the Watergate scandal from like a million years ago.. after which people apparently decided sticking “gate” on the end of every scandal was a fun idea.

SJW have attacked my games my #gamergate revolt and now they are attacking #science.

How is criticizing a shirt attacking science?

I am a man. I’m sick of hearing that because of my gender, my opinions don’t count and sexism towards me isn’t real.

I’m guessing this dude has his head lodged too far up his own ass to see the irony here.

Just as the don’t see the irony in getting upset that Taylor was moved to tears by criticism that was reasonable and didn’t involve death and rape threats, but Anita Sarkeesian, Brianna Wu et al should just suck it up because internet threats aren’t real. They think women should be strong enough to whether horrific threats and doxxing, accuse us of being delicate little flowers for criticizing misogyny, but apparently men are above criticism because that’s what is truly obsessive and mean!

which expresses normal human sexuality

Since when was work the appropriate place to express your sexuality?

This is a case of extreme fury that I just can’t contain anymore.

you have unleashed the dogs of reason and logic.

If you want to convince everyone that you and views represent the epitome of reason and logic, maybe don’t make your whole argument about your emotions. Yes dudes, anger is an emotion, not a logical argument.

Is White Provocateur a video game reference I don’t get? Or is he a white supremacist?

Good lord anti-feminists will compare anything to rape. ANYTHING.

Anything except actual rape that is.

Pressing post. Blockquote mammoth be kind to me please!

Sounds just about like any other day. :/

I was reading a little in Twitter, Kotaku in Action and ??can’t remember early this morning and definitely see some conflict between the antifeminist GG and the “sensible” game journalism crowds. The Warrior rhetoric folks just can’t get through a thread without mentioning one of the LWs or Leigh or P Fernandez or of course others. It is not possible anymore. The journalism folks are confused and frustrated but it seems they still want to be part of the cool kids. Shirtstorm is not a good thing for solidarity.

And notice Milo’s passive voice up there, nothing blatant like ‘ come over to the Dark Side’ but wink wink, get it boys?

Does anyone know what OPskynet or section 6 are. These are on Twitter today and some of the stuff around section6 is so hilarious, they are communicating like fucking special ops guys on a secret mission!!!

I think I’m getting immune to this, need to take a walk or something.

Is White Provocateur a video game reference I don’t get? Or is he a white supremacist?

If it’s a video game reference, it’s not one that I or Google have ever heard of, and his Twitter profile strongly indicates the latter.
