The Halloween Costume of Great Misandry

misandrymra

Actually it's about ethics in trick or treating
Actually it’s about ethics in trick or treating

So on Halloween the dude in the pics above went out dressed as a … well, a Men’s Rights Activist, I guess, or maybe a GamerGater, or Redditor? Something along those lines. Whatever he was, he apparently won second prize in some sort of costume contest.

Well, the dude at the Tumblr blog Indefinite Free Pizza is having none of it:

Some aspects of this costume make me angry. The Guy Fawkes mask is the symbol of Anonymous, one of the most influential political movements of this century who have done great work in the Arab Spring, in the digital privacy movement, and most recently in Ferguson. Fedoras are classy and the wearing of a fedora does not assume any political or social affiliation. Doritos are yummy. Same goes for Mtn. Dew. Hawaiian shirts are fun and floral. Finally, I just want to point out that if someone were to dress up as a feminist for Halloween, you would all be up in arms. MRAs have some legitimate points which feminists tend to ignore (why are men perceived as criminal? Why are men harassed by progressive movements as a whole when all 3.5 billion don’t share a hive mind? Why are men always seen as aggressors in a conflict if the person on the other side is female?) Then again, Halloween costumes are often things that scare you, so maybe this is a great costume for someone with internalized misandry.

I have to admit he’s kind of got a point about the Doritos.

And he does have some awesome cat pics on his Tumblr as well.

I mean, just look at these awesome cats.

But I think there’s something terribly wrong with this bird.

The cat was probably convinced that those lions on TV were the first all-grown-up kitties he’d ever seen.

That video was cute, but cats shouldn’t have such strong american accents. Even the american ones.

Young Trotsky kind of looks like the guy from Eraserhead. Also is the guy in the costume just holding a drink or is that part of the costume too?

Zolnier, they do look rather like they favour the same hairdresser! Hmm, so does young Berlioz, come to that.

Now because I can, and because I’ve been tooling around with PhotoStudio this evening, here’s another musician with excellent hair. 🙂

@cassandrakitty

Scottish partner was actually discussing with me how uncomfortable he was both with the burning of Guy Fawkes effigies and the celebration of him as some anarchist hero (“He was just a weird Catholic who wasn’t very good at blowing things up.”)

Then again we’re both just thrilled for any opportunity for fireworks displays. The only thing better than fire? SPARKLY SKY FIRE!

The whole burning of the Guy creeps me out, too. Gods know the man’s actual death was appalling enough.

There’s some irony in the conspirators’ intention to kill both the King and the Prince of Wales and install Princess Elizabeth as a Catholic Queen (no idea why they were overlooking Prince Charles). Elizabeth went on to marry the Elector Palatine, and their acceptance of the throne of Bohemia at the behest of the Protestants was the spark for the Thirty Years’ War.

Actually, Guy Fawkes would probably make an excellent mascot for GamerGaters.
People are totally confused about what he stood for, because they couldn’t do 2 minutes of Google. His plan was entirely fudged because one of his co-conspirators WARNED ALL THE CATHOLIC MPs TO STAY OUT OF PARLIAMENT on the 5th of November, like these idiots keep incriminating themselves as a hate movement every time they open their mouths on 4-chan (or indeed in public), where they think nobody’s reading their posts. And he was caught red-handed with barrels of gunpowder, like all the Gaters who deny their movement is about harassment can be seen blatantly harassing women.

Guy Fawkes could be made patron saint of all shit manospherean “activists” everywhere, actually. Dangerous, conspiratorial, cack-handed and the only people to consider them heroes are themselves.

That pastebin GG screed is pretty telling. It compares GG to world wars 1 AND 2, refers to the beaches of Normandy but has chosen Tumblr, home to primarily 12-20 year old girls, as its “beach”. Pretty brave move, yes?
I picture a beach full of 13 year olds with One Direction t- shirts playing Candy Crush on their phones and this ” militant” gang trying to convince them that they should care about oppression! and injustice! because ethics.

I think it might just create a whole new batch of feminists.

@zennurse – Not to mention that an awful lot of Tumblr is already familiar with GamerGate, and already pretty darn hostile to it. It baffles me that GG/manospherians so often decry Tumblr as being the very epicenter of the SJW hivemind, but now it suddenly seems like a good place to try and sell GG.

Nobody’s going to buy it. Gamers on Tumblr — and a lot of geek fandoms, actually — will already know about GamerGate and have their opinions about it. Non-gamers on Tumblr aren’t going to care. People on Tumblr who love Felicia Day and/or Wil Wheaton will not have a shred of empathy for GamerGate. I imagine that most people, gamers or not, will not take it kindly when suddenly their blogs are being inundated by dudes politely mansplaining GG. Tumblr was pretty heavily involved in debunking #notyourshield and in signal boosting #YourSlipIsShowing.

Even on the organizational level, Tumblr is one of the more proactive hosting sites out there when it comes to actually making an effort for social responsibility in its community.

It really belies the self-delusion of these folks that they think they will make any headway whatsoever on Tumblr. The most they’re going to accomplish is annoying the ever-loving daylights out of everyone they contact.

They writer couldn’t even get through the thing without being insulting and using the c*** word. Doomed.

The MSM news for Gamergate continues to be “it’s misogyny not ethics” and all the battlefield analogies aren’t changing any minds except maybe at Breitbart. Boingboing has a little article about the origins of Vivian James, hopefully blind followers will see it.

Yeah, fedoras and trilbies can be classy… if you don’t wear them the way these MRA types do.

I’m a little confused by the people claiming that Doritos and Mountain Dew mean this is definitely a GG costume as opposed to a more general MRA/misogynist nerd costume. Those foodstuffs have been icons of the basement-dwelling troll archetype for as long as I can remember.

@Kim:

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good mop of hair must be in want of a hat.

I laughed.

@fruitloopsie:

Maybe next year I’ll dress up as Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Did you hear? They’re pretty much sure they’ve found her crash site. They might have even found her plane!

@Kim again:

Most users on Tumblr are teenagers between 12 and 20

That explains so much. Like how “problematic” is an instant win button, and their general inability to read critically or Google anything.

@Kittehserf:

There’s some irony in the conspirators’ intention to kill both the King and the Prince of Wales and install Princess Elizabeth as a Catholic Queen (no idea why they were overlooking Prince Charles).

She was nine! Sweet Cookie Monster! Nine! No doubt the conspirators thought that was a plus.

Somebody’s mention of Wilfred Owen reminded me that I consider him the best anti-war poet. It’s frustrating to think of what he might have written if he had survived the war.

Arms and the Boy
BY WILFRED OWEN
Let the boy try along this bayonet-blade
How cold steel is, and keen with hunger of blood;
Blue with all malice, like a madman’s flash;
And thinly drawn with famishing for flesh.

Lend him to stroke these blind, blunt bullet-leads,
Which long to nuzzle in the hearts of lads,
Or give him cartridges of fine zinc teeth
Sharp with the sharpness of grief and death.

For his teeth seem for laughing round an apple.
There lurk no claws behind his fingers supple;
And God will grow no talons at his heels,
Nor antlers through the thickness of his curls.

“Men are harrassed by progressive movements.” Not really sure where people get ideas like that. There must be some “Pro Female = Anti Male” mentality in those MRA’s brains.

I’m a little confused by the people claiming that Doritos and Mountain Dew mean this is definitely a GG costume as opposed to a more general MRA/misogynist nerd costume.

It might be in relation to Dorito-gate, another ‘games journalism” scandal where gamers lost their cool over a journalist-who-wasn’t-a-journalist being seated next to bags Doritos and bottles of Mountain Dew and Halo 4, or something. Tbh I remember reading about it for 10 minutes before wandering off to do something more interesting, like watching paint dry on youtube.

I studied Wilfred Owen for both O grade and Higher exams. In neither was there an applicable question, but, I loved the poetry I learnt. Esp Anthem For Doomed Youth.

@emilygoddess,

I was not aware of this, so the Doritos+Mountain Dew combination striked me as a clear reference to the Dorito-gate. But given what you said, now that I think about it, if the costume was really of a gamergater, it would be weird to us such a subtle reference and to not even care writing the hashtag on the placard…

And since all the other feature of the costume are not gg-specific, you’re certainly right.
