#gamergate sarkeesian!

Last Thursday, Anita Sarkeesian noted that Twitter had officially verified her account. Here's what happened next.

Actually I'm not sure if Anita Sarkeesian is Belieber Verified
Actually I’m not sure if Anita Sarkeesian is Belieber Verified

Over on Twitter, a small army of #GamerGaters and their pals have shown up in my mentions to assure me that the only reason Anita Sarkeesian was attacked after offering her opinions about the Marysville shootings was that it was somehow inappropriate for her to discuss the possible causes of the shootings so soon after the shootings, and so, naturally, people were angry at her.

poortaste

And angry people, I guess, just can’t help but send rape threats and call women c*nts! There’s nothing misogynistic about it at all!

Well, this is an argument, I guess. Too bad it’s not really borne out by the facts.

Because, the thing is, Sarkeesian gets harassed pretty much every time she says anything.

Case in point: Last Thursday, she announced that Twitter had, after much delay, officially “verified” her account.  As you might imagine, she’s had to deal with innumerable malicious impersonators. Now people will have an easy way to confirm it’s really her posting.

It’s hard for me to see how this could be considered controversial. Yet here are some of the responses she got to her announcement:

https://twitter.com/richardcranium_/status/525480407798939649

https://twitter.com/EnglishToff/status/525559860969373696

Later on, in response to one of her comments about the Marysville shooting, another of her non-fans managed to work a snide reference to her verified status into his harassing Tweet:

https://twitter.com/Bworth69/status/525817761558437889

So, yeah. Anita’s haters don’t just hate her for having opinions about video games and school shootings. They pretty much hate her for verifiably existing.

PS:; Oh, that guy complaining that it’s in “incredibly poor taste” to discuss the possible causes of a shooting on the day that it happens? He apparently thinks that posting this is in good taste:

If they’re going to troll using steam age stereotypes I think they should be required to do so in full steampunk costume.

AND without the modern conveniences. Including, naturally, those that permit them to express themselves as trolls. No phones, no electricity, and no computers, in other words.

Hey, it’s THEIR nostalgia, not mine.

chaltab: HEY!, I actually look good in a fedora… one of the wide brimmed ones, though. trufax: since long before steampunk one of my buddies has been wearing a tophat with a little chimney (burns incense) on it.

corollary, the steampunk costume must include corsets and bustle.

“It just puzzles me that people are using anti-Semitism as mockery as if this is the 19th century or something –”

Not puzzled at all. People with abusive mindsets *always* use every prejudice to justify their awfulness. It’s what an abusive mindset is.

At this point Sarkeesian could say the sky was blue and the slavering trollbeasts would demand proof from meteorologists, climatologists, visual artists and spectrograph printouts, in between calling her every gendered slur under the sun and claiming Josh McIntosh told her to say that.

steampunked (@steampunked)

You know what. I just can’t be surprised by this anymore. Can’t. Not the racisim, not anything.

Not since I saw an honest to God GamerGate conversation going along these lines:

“It’s like the confederate flag. Not everyone supporting the flag is a racist – or sees the same thing in the flag that you do. But enough are that the movement is suspect.”

“ABOLITIONISTS KILLED PEOPLE AND REPRESSED THEM AND IT ISN’T LIKE SLAVERY IS ACTUALLY BAD!!!! THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CONFEDERATE FLAG BECAUSE THE ABOLITIONISTS WERE WRONG!”

So, yep.

Maybe “puzzled” wasn’t the right word.

It’s just weird that the same people – like AlrightAnon – who use a smoke-screen to hide their awfulness one moment will then use outright anti-Semitism than thinly veiled euphemisms. You’d think that, given their tendency to point out that there’re women who are part of their “cause” and act as if it is about ethics in journalism (when it really isn’t), they’d try covering up their anti-Semitism by disingenuously claiming support for Israel (even though they honestly don’t give a shit) or something along those lines. Kind of like how they bring up The Fine Young Capitalist project or supposedly finding the person whose death threat that made Sarkeesian cancel her speech – all to “prove” they weren’t misogynists and somehow not involved in the harassment, demanding respect and validation they don’t deserve.

@NNN:

There’s screencaps from the very start of the whole “Quinnspiracy” debacle showing plans to use the language of social justice to shut up critics. These people literally think the words mean nothing and are just weapons to hit people with when you don’t like them.

Or as one Tweeter put it:

And it’s possible to “look Jewish” without being Jewish. My grandfather had the look (though light coloring) and my mom’s Jewish friends would ask. But no, he wasn’t.

On a side note, has The Spearhead tanked? It won’t come up for me.

I’ll keep an eye on it. Last post of his was about family responsibilities, life impacts, has to reevaluate things, etc. Once upon a time, Price was a rising star amongst the MRAs. Then he got remarried and they recently had a baby boy (about 3-4 months old now I think). This leaves us with – Paul Elam, I guess. Yuck.

Right – I got that. I guess I was expecting them to come up with some bullshit excuse, to cover up their incredibly overt anti-Semitic comments. Like, they could as easily use the conflict between Palestine and Israel to do such even though it’s an obvious facade.

These people literally think the words mean nothing and are just weapons to hit people with when you don’t like them.

Of course. They lack appreciation for Art (even though they technically indulge in it) and I’ve found them to have poor reading comprehension or language skills as well as incredibly gullible, more often than not.

I mean, for their supposed “love” of videogames as an artistic medium – they sure as shit don’t appreciate it enough to allow Sarkeesian to make critical analysis of fictional tropes. I keep coming across gamers who seem to only care about it as pure entertainment and seem disgusted by titles that try actually being good stories, as if the only kind of enjoyment they get is entirely mechanical. It says to me that they can’t truly enjoy Art, at least intellectually. Even when they try by referencing Fight Club or some other movie or TV show – it’s always a misunderstanding the context. The fact they applied the whole red pill/blue pill thing from The Matrix is downright hilarious, as if one could apply any of that to Men’s Rights or Feminism.

And it’s possible to “look Jewish” without being Jewish.

Which is definitely the case with Sarkeesian, given she gets insulted as being Jewish even though she isn’t – she’s ethnically Armenian, which isn’t the same thing. All because she happens to have a big nose…as if there aren’t any big-nosed members of any other ethnicity ever…

And just how anti-semitic are #GGits that they think someone should be insulted to be told that they look or are Jewish? The mind boggles!

What is up with the anti-Semitism? Are the tropes that Anita is talking about plagarised from the Protocols of the Elders of Zion?

Can someone remind me, are Jewish people “behind” the Illuminati, which is a front for the Feminist High Council, where we all meet as David in cat suits?

I got nuthin’.

It irks me that troll accounts like her can get verified when 80% of the time she’s just baiting people.

Er. Even if she was a completely disingenuous attention-seeker whose only goal in life was to drum up controversy, that’s not what verified means. “Verified” doesn’t mean “Twitter thinks this person is awesome”, it just means “This person actually is who they are claiming to be.” And whatever opinion you have of Sarkeesian, I think everyone can agree that she is actually herself.

Seriously, you’d think that at least one or two of these folks would take time to understand what words mean before making arguments about them.

Wow. The money they are raising through a website to help raise awareness of domestic violence will go toward their legal fees, not toward helping abuse victims. Is that really supposed to encourage people who actually care about domestic violence to donate?

Oh, wait, my mistake. I thought the website was meant to help people.

Also, here is a donotlink for scarlettpipstrelle’s last post. I refuse to give AVFM more clicks.

I’m really trying to figure out that picture. I know it is supposed to be some sort of dig at Anita Sarkeesian, but I would never have figured that out on my own. To me, the picture is saying that the current state of #gamegate is a giant airborne 1930’s Nazi-propaganda character which is currently being tracked and targeted by NORAD.

Kootie: if they did that they’d have nothing to argue with. See the dictionary definition of “ethics” for example.
