Ever since Fruitloopsie posted about why comparing MRAs to children bothered zir, I’ve been really thinking about this, and I’m finally able to explain why I don’t like it either. And I’m only including the quotation above because it was the one that reminded me I wanted to examine this.

I find the ‘they’re so childish’ argument too close to the ‘boys will be boys’ excuse to be comfortable with it. These asshats are using their privilege to behave immaturely; they think they’re not required to behave like responsible adult human beings, even though they require everyone else to behave that way (or else!). But that’s just one of the things about it bothering me.
For one thing, children legally aren’t responsible for their own actions; when MRAs are compared to children, it’s like saying they also aren’t responsible for their own actions. I disagree with that on so many levels. These are adult humans deciding to behave irresponsibly, and that’s the sticking point for me. They’re choosing to be evil asshats.
For another, classifying them, however loosely, as children positions everyone else as their adult supervisor. Fuck that shit. I am not required to educate, pacify, or clean up after these douchcanoes. They’re adults choosing to wallow in muck; that’s what’s mock-worthy, for me.
I see the childish=misogynist as a deflection of the actual adult evil going on. At least ‘immature’ implies that the natural state should be mature. Calling them children doesn’t do that. It diminishes them, sure, because we don’t value children’s opinions, but it also deflects the very adult evil they’re advocating.

To me the “they’re childish/whining/infantile” is criticising them precisely because they are adults who should be long past that stage; because what’s expected, even acceptable to a degree in children, is not, in adults. I’d never read it as giving them a pass, but I see how it can, same as saying they’re sick/mad/whatever ableist term does. I’ll think about that.

I like your point, Puddleglum. I definitely think a lot of children have a more developed sense of treating others as you’d like to be treated and fair play than the resentful tools we mock here. That prejudicial stuff definitely gets added on and warps the ability to treat others as human beings that most kids develop before they hit puberty.

I can honestly say that the question/accusation, “What are you, five?” carries for me zero of the connotations you describe. I don’t think it is giving anyone a pass to tell them to act their fucking age; it’s actually the opposite, conveying that they do NOT get a pass by throwing a tantrum like a five-year-old.
I really think it coddles and excuses people to pretend that a grown-ass man or woman behaving like a child is actually OK and something that we definitely should not call out. If an adult behaves like a spoiled tweener and we say nothing, that is giving them a pass for their behavior.
My opinion, worth whatever you feel it’s worth.

The other day a friend of mine showed me a picture of her son sitting in the laundry basket while watching TV. Her son is 3. It’s cute when they’re 3.
What if you saw a picture of Heartiste doing the same thing? Using what language would you convey that this is not age-appropriate behavior for a neurotypical adult, without mentioning Heartiste’s age or the fact that we expect this kind of thing of 3-year-olds? Or would you just let it slide without comment?
I can’t come up with a way to criticize an adult for sitting in a laundry basket to watch TV without any reference to age or childish behavior. If this can’t be criticized, then we lose all ability as a society to differentiate between what is and is not acceptable behavior for mature, neurotypical adults. I don’t see a society being able to function when 50-year-olds are able to throw fist-waving, feet-kicking temper tantrums on the floor at work without any kind of social censure.
